Muscat Municipality awards tender for Commercial District development project in Ruwi
The project will include expanding green areas, creating seating areas and additional parking to ensure smooth traffic flow, developing pedestrian pathways, incorporating modern technologies, and establishing other facilities. The implementation of this project aligns with Muscat Municipality's efforts to enhance the urban landscape, improve quality of life in the city, and provide a comprehensive, sustainable, human-centric urban environment that serves all segments of society.
The project will be executed over an estimated area of 360,000 square meters, with a timeline of 16 months. It includes landscaping and green spaces covering approximately 6,500 square meters, shaded seating areas and additional sitting zones, and the provision of 2,458 new parking spaces to improve traffic movement. Additionally, the project features pedestrian walkways covering around 101,806 square meters, the deployment of smart infrastructure, and the construction of service kiosks and modern restrooms—contributing to increased economic and commercial activity and enriching the urban experience for both residents and visitors.
Commenting on the announcement, His Excellency Ahmed Mohammed Al Humaidi, Chairman of Muscat Municipality, said:
'Muscat Governorate is witnessing the execution of a package of major development projects that strengthen its economic and tourism position, contributing to comprehensive and sustainable development that embodies its ambitious vision. The Ruwi Commercial District Development Project falls within Muscat Governorate's strategy to develop commercial areas in line with the highest approved standards. These development projects align with the Greater Muscat Structural Plan, which is a key output of the National Urban Development Strategy under Oman Vision 2040, aiming to balance economic growth and quality of life, and to build an integrated, sustainable urban environment that meets the needs of current and future generations.'
The Ruwi Commercial District Development Project represents a pivotal step in Muscat Municipality's vision to transform commercial centers into vibrant, sustainable destinations aligned with the development goals of Muscat Governorate. The project is expected to raise infrastructure efficiency, improve the level of public services, enhance the area's attractiveness to investors, and maximize commercial opportunities for local enterprises, thereby accelerating economic development.

South Batinah sees sharp rise in building permits
Rustaq – South Batinah recorded a 50% increase in major building permits in the first half of 2025, underscoring a surge in urban development and real estate investment, according to municipal data. The number of permits rose to 3,289 from 2,188 in the same period last year. Barka led with 1,786 permits, followed by Musannah with 634, Rustaq with 565, Wadi al Maawil with 127, Nakhal with 125 and Al Awabi with 52. Residential construction dominated, accounting for 2,994 permits. Industrial projects followed with 92 permits, residential-commercial (85), agricultural (56), government (29), commercial (28) and tourism (five). Minor building permits increased 29% to 275, while building completion certificates rose 51% to 2,515. 'These statistics reflect growth in construction indicators and the extent of the municipality's efforts to expedite procedures and improve service quality,' said Badr bin Mohammed al Saidi, Director General of South Batinah Municipality. He said the strategy aims to empower the urban sector, attract real estate investment and meet comprehensive development goals. Saidi highlighted the use of modern technologies and digital services to speed up transactions, enhance efficiency and ensure compliance with technical and safety standards. 'These positive indicators are a strong incentive for us to continue working to meet the needs of population and urban growth.' Mohammed bin Masi al Kindi, Director of Technical Affairs Department, said the increase in permits and completion certificates reflected 'significant development in urban planning and growing demand for residential and commercial projects'. He added that South Batinah is undergoing major urban expansion, requiring balanced and sustainable planning. The municipality, he said, is enhancing infrastructure and coordinating with other agencies to support housing and commercial projects in line with Oman Vision 2040 objectives.

RO2.97mn Quriyat fishing port upgrade 83% complete
Muscat – Construction of a marine wharf development project at Quriyat fishing port is 83% complete, according to Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources. Costing more than RO2.97mn, the project is part of efforts to modernise fishing ports and boost their role in coastal economies under Oman Vision 2040. Mohammed bin Abdullah al Rashdi, Civil Engineer at Directorate General of Fishing Ports in the ministry, said the project aims to boost economic diversification, attract investment and develop the fishing fleet. 'The ministry seeks to create an investment-friendly environment and make better use of fish resources by improving port services for both public and private use,' he said. The development includes a 185m fixed berth on the breakwater, designed to improve maritime handling operations and expand the port's capacity. 'We are also constructing a new marine berth for mooring ships and boats, which will increase efficiency in port operations,' Rashdi said. A 33,000sqm investment plot is being created within the port to host commercial and service activities linked to the marine fisheries. The site will also have a dedicated area for a marine crane to support ship and boat maintenance.

Transformation and Sustainable Leadership forum kicks off in Salalah
SALALAH, AUG 10 The Government Transformation and Sustainable Leadership Conference commenced in Salalah yesterday under the auspices of Shaikh Salim Mustahail Al-Mashani, Advisor at the Royal Court Affairs. The three-day conference, held as part of the 2025 Labour Forum organized by the Ministry of Labour, is attracted broad participation from experts and specialists from within the Sultanate of Oman and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. The conference programme includes a number of panel discussions and workshops focusing on key issues related to labour market transformations and future skills. The first session, entitled Modern Organizational Structures: From Bureaucracy to Institutional Agility, featured working papers addressing: institutional challenges in administrative bodies, tools for organizational restructuring, re-engineering of procedures, in addition to case studies from certain countries. Over the coming days, the conference will feature several sessions on behavioral engineering, governmental leadership, competencies and talent empowerment, smart management, in addition to a number of international experiences. The conference aims to stimulate innovation and professional development, and to showcase the latest modern technologies and innovations in the labour market to increase productivity, open new horizons, enhance social dialogue, and foster professional communication to create constructive cooperation among specialists and those interested in the labour market. This is in order to create a decent work environment and improve regulatory labour policies, thereby enhancing the labour market's regulatory framework in line with economic, technological, and social developments, as well as to promote international and regional cooperation by expanding partnerships with international and regional counterparts to exchange experiences, practices, and knowledge. During his opening speech, Nasser Salem Al Hadhrami, Director General of Labour in Dhofar Governorate, stated: 'At the Ministry of Labour, and in light of Oman Vision 2040, we believe that change begins from within.
