‘Put my hand up': McQualter opens up on sub regret

Perth Now09-06-2025
West Coast coach Andrew McQualter admits subbing rookie Bo Allan onto the field with only eight minutes remaining against North Melbourne was 'unfair', and all but guaranteed the youngster wouldn't get the vest again this week.
The 19-year-old, who was taken with the club's top draft pick last year, replaced emerging key forward Archer Reid in the dying stages of the 10-point defeat in Bunbury.
But there was little he could contribute as his flagging teammates struggled to win the ball, the Kangaroos dominating the clearances 14-2 in the final term to claw back a three-goal deficit.
McQualter said wrapping his head around how to utilise the sub position had been difficult in his first year as the Eagles head coach and added he needed to support Allan better going forward.
'I have to put my hand up. I haven't handled Bo and the sub particularly well in the last few weeks,' he told 7NEWS.
'I think it's still something I'm learning in my job. So, we need to support Bo a bit better, particularly being a young player.
'Putting him on the field with a couple of minutes to go is a little unfair, so we'll work our way through that.
'I find (the sub role) really challenging, particularly when the game's in the balance like that. You're weary of bringing somebody on the field off unless they're injured.
'It's an ongoing challenge, but you've got to look at it and try and find a way to make it an advantage.'
Despite confirming the rookie was unlikely to be saddled with the vest on Sunday against Carlton, McQualter wouldn't confirm if Allan would remain in the senior team or drop back to WAFL level.
'I can 98 per cent guarantee that he won't be sub this week; I wouldn't do that to him three weeks in a row,' he said.
'We'll see which level he plays at, though.'
Allan has had an interrupted season after dual illnesses wrecked hopes of an early-season debut before the youngster copped a suspension when he finally did earn his maiden appearance in round nine against Melbourne as the club's 300th player.
Despite giving up five of the last six goals of the game to throw away another winnable position, McQualter was full of praise for his defenders, who held spearhead Nick Larkey and Jack Darling goalless, even going as far as to say Harry Edwards had played the best game of his career to date.
'I thought it was one of Harry's best games he's played for our footy club,' he said. 'I thought all of our defenders didn't defend particularly well in quarter one, but we gave them some really strong feedback at quarter time, and Harry led the way after that.
'I think he had 13 intercept possessions and kept Nick Larkey goalless, which is a great effort. So, really good signs for him.'

West Coast Eagles midfielder Elijah Hewett says he wants to create culture where Harley Reid wants to stay

West Coast midfielder Elijah Hewett says he's taking on the responsibility of creating a culture of success at the Eagles, where players such as Harley Reid want to stay. Reid is the talk of the AFL world as the Eagles mull over a monumental contract that could potentially lock the 20-year-old star in for the next 11 years in a deal worth about $24m — which would be the biggest in AFL history. It comes at a time when Reid has been sidelined with the first major injury of his career, with the Victorian to miss the rest of the season with an ankle syndesmosis issue he sustained in the western derby on the weekend. Hewett — who is only in his third season at the Eagles — said Reid was 'one of the best players' he'd ever seen and wanted him to be at the club long-term. 'I love the club to bits. I fell in love with it as a little boy, so for me, greater than me being at the club personally is to see the club succeed over a long period of time,' Hewett said. 'It's important for me to help build an environment where people want to be there and that includes Harley. 'And I love Harley and love how he goes about his business. He's one of the best players I've ever seen so to have him stay around is important.' Hewett sits next to Reid in the locker room and said his teammate was going well after he sustained the injury in the middle of massive contract speculation, which has grabbed headlines across the country. 'He's a switched-on young man and he's got a great grasp of what's important to him,' he said. 'He's taken it in his stride, and to see him in good spirits at the club is important. 'He has had such a great year and such a great last two years, so missing a few weeks won't rattle him. And he'll get back on course and keep training.' Without Reid as well as experienced midfielders Elliot Yeo (ankle) and Jack Graham (suspension) the likes of Hewett are going to have to stand up when they take on Melbourne at Marvel Stadium this Saturday. The Swan Districts product also revealed that exciting draftee Tom Gross was set to come into the side to help cover the loss of Reid. 'I think Tom Gross comes in. I will probably take on a bit more responsibility and that's great,' Hewett said. 'We've got a young, rebuilding midfield and we're all taking on a bit more responsibility as the years go. I will take it by the reins.'

UGSFL 2025: Katanning crunch Boddington on their home turf, Narrogin secures top spot with ninth win

Katanning Wanderers produced a brilliant win over reigning premiers Boddington, booting 16 goals in wet conditions to strengthen their Upper Great Southern Football League finals hopes on Sunday. The Eagles, who sit one spot above the Tigers on the ladder, got more than they bargained for as the visitors were ruthless in their attack, securing an upset 45-point win in round 11 of the competition. Despite the downpour, the Eagles took off with the ball and landed two swift majors in the first five minutes of the game before the Tigers responded with their own, making for a constant back and forth that ended in a two-point lead for the home side at quarter-time. The Tigers were wild with their charge in second term, crunching their opponent with ease led by a dominant display from best players Jake Blight, Toby Quartermaine, Zane Sutherland, Caleb Keley and James Laurino. Four goals to nil in the second pushed the Tigers to a healthy half-time lead as they went on to secure their sixth win of the season. The Tigers booted five goals in the third term and two in the last on their way to a vital 16.9 (105) to 9.6 (60) victory. Joshua McMahon, Ryan Pontillo, Tyrone Roe and Tramain Way each booted three majors for the visitors. Eagles spearhead Lloyd Padwick kicked five goals in a losing affair while Troy Egerton-Warburton, Dylan Kirk, Ben and Matthew Sherry, Jarrod Salmeri and Lewis Parsons were strong contributors for the defending premiers, who face a tricky run home. The Tigers are level on points with the Eagles heading into the final three rounds of the season. Kukerin-Dumbleyung remain firmly in the finals mix after a 23-point win over Brookton-Pingelly in Brookton on Sunday. The Cougars led at every change and despite losing the final term they notched a fifth win of the season to stay one game outside the top four. Howie Clegg starred with five goals in the 12.9 (81) to 8.10 (58) triumph, while teammates Toby Perrin, Liam Park, Austin Shotter, Charlie Keast and Stockton Cruz-Shotter shone. Finn O'Reilly finished with six goals for the Panthers. Wickepin virtually stitched up a top two finish and finals double chance, beating Williams by 26 points in Wickepin. In a low-scoring affair, the Warriors kicked three unanswered goals in the second term on their way to a 7.10 (52) to 4.2 (26) result. The home side were best served by Kendal Ballard, Miles Franklin, Ryan Melvin, Sam Fortini, Jordan Flavel and Regan Wilson, while Kayle Kirby kicked three majors. Wagin tested flag fancies Narrogin in the opening term but the Hawks extended their winning streak to 10 games on Sunday. The margin was just eight points at quarter-time at Clayton Road Oval but the Bulldogs lost Zac South and John Lee to injury as they fell 72 points short in the end. Four goals to nil in the second handed the Hawks the momentum by the long break. The home side kicked nine goals in the rampant second half to win 17.15 (117) to 6.9 (45) as Coen Jackman proved a handful, with five goals for the Hawks.

Essendon coy on Lions move on injured big man Sam Draper: ‘News to me'

Essendon coach Brad Scott has played down rumours linking Sam Draper with a move to Brisbane, but concedes there are doubts whether the unrestricted free agent will stay. The Lions are expected to snare both Draper and West Coast co-captain Oscar Allen in what is set to be a bumper free agency period for the defending premiers. Draper is an unrestricted free agent, meaning Essendon have no power in halting a move away. Know the news with the 7NEWS app: Download today Allen is a restricted free agent, but with West Coast set to receive pick No.2 as compensation for losing him, it is highly unlikely they will match Brisbane's bid. Essendon (6-12) have endured a season from hell, with a raft of injuries forcing them to field a record-equalling 13 debutants this year. Draper is among the walking wounded at the Bombers, with the star ruckman ruled out for the rest of the season after rupturing his Achilles tendon in round six. The 26-year-old South Australian was also reportedly weighing up a switch to Adelaide, but that appears unlikely after the Crows re-signed ruckman Reilly O'Brien for a further three years. It leaves Brisbane in the box seat to land Draper - not that Scott has heard much about it. 'That's news to me, and I'd like to think that I would know before most,' Scott said on Wednesday. 'We're in constant dialogue. I've been really clear all year about supporting Drapes in terms of his decision-making process. 'He's got a big call to make. He loves Essendon and loves the opportunity he got here.' When asked about any doubts he may have about Draper choosing to stay, Scott was pragmatic. 'Well any player who's out of contract coming into August, there'd always be a question mark,' he said. 'But we won't be putting undue pressure on Drapes. He'll take as long as he needs to make his call. 'He's a much-loved member of our club and personally I'd love him to stay, and he knows that.' Essendon currently have 16 players on their injury list ahead of Saturday's clash with Sydney at the SCG. Jordan Ridley was the latest newcomer to that list, with the defender ruled out for four weeks after injuring his hamstring in last week's 93-point loss to the Western Bulldogs. It marks the third time Ridley has been cut down by a hamstring injury this year. 'It's not a true recurrence of the previous injury, but it's another hamstring injury,' Scott said. 'It's incredibly frustrating for him and for us. We really feel for him. All we can do now is go back to the drawing board. 'We're just determined to get him right. He's an important part of our long-term future, and we'll make whatever investment we need to get him right.'
