‘A hero': MARTA train operator ran to help shooting victims, still got passengers to the airport
They say while there was panic and chaos on the train, she remained calm and raced toward the gunfire.
'There was a criminal on the train, but there was also a hero,' passenger Laura Showman told Channel 2's Tom Jones on Tuesday.

Showman says the operator of the train took control immediately after the shooting Sunday.
'She put herself in danger. She didn't know what was going on,' she said.
Showman, her husband and two small children were here from Alabama to visit the Georgia Aquarium and took the train back to the airport.
'(I) heard three gunshots and knew immediately what that was. It was very loud,' Showman recalled.
The shots came from two cars away at the East Point station.
Police say a gunman shot a man in the chest and a bullet grazed another passenger in the neck. Both are recovering. The shooter got away.
Showman says the danger didn't stop the train's operator from running toward the gunfire.
'We don't know what just happened, but here comes somebody who is taking action and she's gonna go save the day. I was like, 'Wow,'' Showman said.
She says the operator had her first aid kit and gloves and ran towards the victims. Showman says she was professional, efficient and unafraid.
Once police and paramedics arrived, 'She got all of the passengers onto another train and then took over that train.'
And she got them to the airport.
Showman gave the operator a hug, saying it was for going above and beyond her job responsibilities to keep her passengers safe.
'I was impressed. I was really amazed and thankful,' she said. 'And I thought she's a hero today.'
Jones connected Showman with MARTA so she could express how she felt about the operator's bravery.
Jones asked to speak to the operator, but MARTA declined the invitation.
Police continue their search for the gunman and say they have good leads.

A Labour councillor called for far-right protesters' throats to be slit during a 'rabble-rousing' speech at an anti-racism protest, a court has heard. In the wake of rioting following the Southport murders, Ricky Jones, 58, described demonstrators as 'disgusting Nazi fascists', his trial was told. The now-suspended councillor had been told by the Labour Party to stay away from the protest, but turned up anyway, jurors heard. A video showing Jones addressing the crowd in Walthamstow, east London, on August 7 last year went viral on social media after the protest. Wearing a black polo top and surrounded by cheering supporters, the councillor said: 'They are disgusting Nazi fascists. We need to cut all their throats and get rid of them all.' He also drew his finger across his throat as he spoke to the 'tinderbox' crowd. The demonstration had been organised in response to plans for a far-right march outside Waltham Forest Immigration Bureau, jurors at Snaresbrook Crown Court were told. It followed the nationwide violent disorder that occurred last summer after the Southport murders. Prosecutor Ben Holt said Jones used 'inflammatory, rabble-rousing language in the throng of a crowd that we will hear described as a tinderbox'. Opening the case on Monday, Mr Holt said: 'Last summer, three young girls were killed at a dance-themed party in Southport. 'There was some hysteria… Some of that grief manifested itself in anger, and regrettably, violence.' The incidents brought out counter-protests, one of which Jones decided to go to, the prosecutor said. 'He attended in the face of considered advice not to do so,' Mr Holt added. 'At Walthamstow that day, rumours had spread that there was going to be a protest outside an immigration centre. 'During that event, he made a speech, amplified through a public address system, to the crowd. 'He called the other side disgusting Nazi fascists. He said that their throats needed to be slit. 'He drew his finger along his throat as he said that. 'This, in a setting where, we suggest, violence could readily have been anticipated. 'We ask rhetorically, what did Mr Jones think was going to happen?' In the days before the protest, the councillor had been warned to stay away by his party. A letter sent to him said: 'With heightened tensions in many areas of the country due to the threat of further violent disorder, we wanted to remind all Labour party councillors to follow the clear advice issued by the police which is not to take part in, attend or encourage others to attend, any sort of demonstration or counter demonstration.' Jones, of Dartford, who denies one count of encouraging violent disorder, told police he was 'sorry' he made the comments 'in the heat of the moment', and had not intended for them to be 'taken literally', Mr Holt said. The councillor also told police he was upset having been sent pictures of National Front stickers that had been left on a train, which had razor blades hidden behind them. Jones, who has been a borough councillor in Dartford, Kent, since 2019, was suspended by the Labour Party the day after the alleged incident. The trial continues.

2 Atlanta transit police officers injured in shooting at downtown station
ATLANTA (AP) — Two Atlanta transit police officers were shot after they tried to confront a man urinating in a train station, investigators say. Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority Police Chief M. Scott Kreher tells local news outlets that officials are looking for the man, who got away after shooting at the officers as they tried to arrest him late Thursday. The shooting happened just before midnight at MARTA's Five Points station, the downtown transfer point for the system's trains. Kreher told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the man became irate and refused to cooperate when officers approached him. Officers decided to arrest the man, but Kreher said he pulled out a handgun and shot over his shoulder at the officer. He grazed a female officer in the knee and struck a male officer in the arm. The female officer has been released from the hospital but is also reporting hearing loss because she was so close when the gun was fired. Kreher said she is expected to fully recover. The male officer was undergoing surgery Friday for his arm injury. Cameras show the man then got on a train and rode two stops south, throwing his gun on the roof of the West End station. Police haven't publicly identified the man but say they know who he is and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force is looking for him. The gun has been recovered. The Five Points station reopened when trains started running Friday morning.
