Need collective resolve to back forces: Tamil Nadu Governor

CHENNAI: Governor RN Ravi on Saturday called for national unity and collective resolve to support the armed forces during an all-faith meeting held at the Bharathiyar Mandapam in Raj Bhavan. The event was attended by Environment Minister Thangam Thenarasu on behalf of the state government and leaders of various faiths.
In his address, Ravi strongly condemned Pakistan's continued acts of aggression and terrorism, referring to it as a 'rogue, terrorist state.' He said India had shown restraint for years despite repeated terror attacks, but after the killing of 26 innocent tourists - including 25 Indians and one Nepali - in Pahalgam, India was compelled to respond. 'When they attacked in Pahalgam, we responded with strong actions. There has to be a price to pay for such acts,' he asserted.
The governor warned that although a ceasefire was announced, it has not altered the ground reality. 'We are dealing with an unreliable adversary whose intent is to destabilise our country through misinformation and internal discord,' he said.
The meeting was also attended by the Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali.

Taken up cases of violence against Indians in Ireland, says MEA

NEW DELHI: India said on Thursday it has strongly taken up several cases of violence against Indian nationals in Ireland in recent weeks and is extending all possible support to the victims. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal addresses a press conference, in New Delhi on Thursday. (ANI) External affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, however, noted that Irish President Michael D Higgins and deputy prime minister and foreign minister Simon Harris have both 'publicly condemned these deplorable acts of violence'. Over the past few weeks, a taxi driver, a data scientist and a sous chef from India were targets of racially motivated assaults by Irish youth that left them with serious injuries. Videos have circulated on social media of another tech worker who was beaten, stabbed and partially stripped at Tallaght, while a six-year-old Irish-Indian girl was allegedly attacked while playing outside her home in County Waterford. 'There have been several cases of violence against Indian nationals in Ireland…We have strongly taken up this matter with the Irish authorities in Dublin as well as with the embassy here,' Jaiswal told a weekly media briefing. 'We note that both the president of Ireland as also the deputy prime minister and foreign minister have publicly condemned these deplorable acts of violence,' he said. 'We hope that the issues will settle.' The Indian embassy in Dublin is in touch with the victims. 'They are also in touch with our community members and extending all possible support,' Jaiswal said. Following the increase in physical attacks on Indian nationals, the Indian embassy in Dublin issued an advisory that cautioned Indian nationals to take 'reasonable precautions for their personal safety and avoid deserted areas, especially in odd hours'. The Garda, or Ireland's state police force, is investigating some attacks on Indians as possible hate crimes. Harris said on social media last week that Ireland will 'never ever tolerate racism' while thanking the Indian community for 'their contributions to our country in so many ways'. Earlier this week, Higgins said the attacks are in 'stark contradiction to the values that we as people hold dear'. He said such acts 'diminish all of us and obscure the immeasurable benefits the people of India have brought to the life of this country'. The Ireland India Council announced on Monday that it was postponing the India Day celebration in Dublin to commemorate India's Independence Day due to safety concerns. Jaiswal responded to a separate question on an instance of the harassment of an Indian couple in Canada by saying India takes the safety and security of its nationals abroad very seriously. 'Our mission as well as our consulates are in close touch with the community members and as and when there is an issue which needs to be flagged as far as security is concerned, we take it to the local law enforcement authorities for appropriate action,' he said.

India-US trade talks on track even as Trump-Putin meet adds to tariff uncertainty

New Delhi: Despite mounting uncertainty over US President Donald Trump's repeated threats to impose additional tariffs on India for crudepurchases from Russia, New Delhi says trade negotiations with Washington remain on course. Discussions are advancing on 'four parallel tracks' involving negotiators, ministers, diplomats, and industry representatives, commerce secretary Sunil Barthwal told reporters on Thursday. He said clarity on the proposed sixth round of talks would emerge later this month. 'When we met with the US team in New Delhi, they indicated another round of discussions in the last week of August. We are guided by the joint statement made by the leadership, which outlined the goal of doubling bilateral trade between the two nations to $500 billion,' he said. 'We are actively engaged. The US is a very important trade partner for India, and India is an important partner for the US. By the last week of August, we will have a clearer picture of how the discussions are progressing,' he added. The US is not only India's largest trading partner, but also one of the few major economies with which New Delhi enjoys a significant trade surplus. India's goods trade surplus with the US rose to $41.18 billion in fiscal year 2025, up 16.6% from $35.33 billion a year earlier. The increase was driven by an 11.6% rise in exports to $86.51 billion, while imports from the US grew 7.4% to $45.33 billion. In contrast, India's overall goods trade posted a deficit of $282.8 billion in FY25. Barthwal said that negotiations toward a bilateral trade agreement were 'progressing steadily', with both sides aiming to conclude the process by fall 2025. The assurances came a day after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that Washington could escalate secondary tariffs on India if the forthcoming Trump-Putin talks fail to yield a breakthrough. 'We have put secondary tariffs on Indians for buying Russian oil. And I could see, if things don't go well, then sanctions or secondary tariffs could go up,' Bessent told Bloomberg TV. The US has already announced two rounds of duties on Indian goods: a 25% tariff that took effect on 7 August, and another 25% penalty linked to Russian oil imports, due to begin from 27 August. A senior Indian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stressed that 'we would not like to speculate on the impact of the second set' of tariffs. For the duties already in force, the government is engaging with industry stakeholders and closely tracking sectors most exposed to the US market. Export Promotion Councils, particularly those representing labour-intensive industries, have been in talks with the commerce ministry. The official mentioned above said Indian exporters generally fall into two camps: those heavily reliant on the US and those with more diversified markets, including the UK and the European Union. 'The companies may face challenges, but they are exploring other avenues. If, over the next six months, UK markets open up and tariffs on labour-intensive sectors drop to zero, companies that lose in the US may gain in the UK,' the official said.
