Opposition senses ‘opportunity' in electoral roll revision, frequently rakes up issue
, the opposition Grand Alliance (GA) missed forming the govt by a whisker. Five years later, the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being conducted by the Election Commission ahead of the polls in the state has come as a blessing in disguise for GA, feel poll analysts.

GA is armed with a prominent issue that is supposedly causing confusion among electors, they said.
Cashing in on the 'opportunity', leader of opposition in the state assembly,
, along with INDIA bloc allies, is raking up the concerns of voters almost daily. So far, he has held around six press conferences over the issue, indicating the significance of the issue, while the NDA has held none. The opposition is finding it a major opportunity to reach out to a large number of voter, cashing in on the anger gripping them.
"First, your name will be deleted from the voter list, and in due course, you will lose benefits from all welfare schemes that you might be getting now, one by one," Tejashwi has repeatedly warned at press conferences.
Explaining how the deletion of names of the voter proves disastrous for the poor, RJD spokesperson Chitranjan Gagan said on Tuesday: "Deletion of names from the voter list means losing every govt facility."
He said the biggest loss the people could face is not getting 5 kg free ration. Of the total population of 10.41 crore, as per the 2011 census, the total number of beneficiaries under the Centre-sponsored Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana in Bihar is around 8.71 crore, which comes to 84% of the total population. They will also not be getting houses under PM Awas Yojana, pension and other such facilities.
Social scientist B N Prasad said the EC has launched such a big campaign, but the methodology remains unclear.

"It is not clear if the BLOs are visiting door to door to deliver/collect enumeration forms. No BLO has visited my home so far. Also, the voices coming from the grassroots do not appear fair or accurate," Prasad, who works with the AN Sinha Institute of Social Studies, told the TOI.
"This is a theatre of the absurd," said former principal of Patna College, N K Chaudhary, while reacting to the opposition's hullabaloo over the SIR issue.
"But EC should have given more time and increased the number of documents required to be submitted with the filled-up enumeration forms," he said.
The opposition has found a potent issue—much like in the 2015 Bihar polls, when NDA's lead crumbled after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat called for a review of the reservation policy. RJD chief Lalu Prasad turned it into an 'opportunity', warning voters that the RSS-BJP aimed to dismantle the quota system.

INDIA bloc parties resolve to question foreign policy ‘failures' of government
The Opposition will highlight the government's failure to apprehend the perpetrators of the Pahalgam terror attack and U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated claims on allegedly brokering peace between India and Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, the leaders of 24 INDIA bloc parties decided at a virtual meeting on Saturday (July 19, 2025) evening. The meeting comes ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which is scheduled to begin on Monday (July 21, 2025). Sources said the parties have also decided to hold a protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Bihar ahead of the Assembly polls in the State. The Parliamentary floor leaders could have another meeting, after the all-party meeting hosted by the government on Sunday. Statehood for J&K The demand for statehood for Jammu and Kashmir will also be raised during the session. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge had recently written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the subject. National Conference leader and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that the Opposition must be firm on this demand. It was also decided that the INDIA bloc should have a physical meeting soon. Addressing reporters at the end of the meeting, Congress leader Pramod Tiwari said that the leaders have listed eight priority issues, though this by no means is an exhaustive list of all the subjects that the Opposition plans to raise. 'The issue that directly impacts the pride of 140 crore Indians is why, even after so many days, the government has failed to nab terrorists responsible for the Pahalgam terror attack,' he said. Mr. Tiwari said that the government has already 'confessed' that there was an 'intelligence failure'. 'U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated claim, at least 24 times, is that he used America's trade deal as the negotiating card to broker peace between India and Pakistan. And in face of these claims our Prime Minister has been mute. We will raise this issue,' he added. There was speculation that the Trinamool Congress could skip the meeting, but the party's national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee was present. Sources said that Mr. Banerjee questioned why the Intelligence Bureau chief Tapan Deka got an extension even though the J&K Lt. Governor himself admitted that 'intelligence failure' led to the terror attack. The meeting began with Mr. Kharge's presenting a brief outline on what the Opposition expected from the government during the Monsoon Session of Parliament. He said that the 'foreign policy failure' in the context of the Pahalgam terror attack needs to be addressed. Mr. Gandhi, in a very brief intervention, said that India's 'recent failures in foreign policy is intricately connected to the Pahalgam terror attack'. During this discussion, Mr. Tiwari said the Opposition will also raise India's stand on 'Israel's brutal and persistent attack on Gaza'. 'We expect the Prime Minister to be present during the debate on these issues,' Mr. Tiwari added. Several parties also raised the issue of the impending delimitation, which is of deep concern to the Southern States that are anticipating a possible reduction in seats in Parliament because of the exercise. CPI general secretary D. Raja flagged Mr. Gandhi's recent remarks equating the CPI(M) and RSS. According to sources, he said leaders should not raise statements that 'create conflict' among the INDIA bloc constituents and 'confusion among the people'. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader and Chief Minister of Jharkhand Hemant Soren also participated.

CPI(M) calls Special Intensive Revision in Bihar ‘back door' entry of NRC, to hold protest on Aug 8
The Left party criticised the Election Commission for attempting to verify the citizenship of voters under the guise of revising electoral rolls, stating that this action is beyond its constitutional authority. In a statement following a Politburo meeting on July 18, the CPI(M) expressed concern over Bengali-speaking migrants being targeted in various states and reported evictions in Assam. New Delhi, Jul 19 (PTI) The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Saturday called for nationwide protests on August 8 against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar, terming it a 'back door' approach to enforce the National Register of Citizens (NRC) exercise. 'Under the baseless pretext of weeding out foreigners from the electoral rolls, they are disenfranchising vast sections of minorities and other select groups,' the CPI(M) said. 'The NRC exercise, which was widely opposed by the people before the Covid pandemic, is sought to be enforced surreptitiously through the back door. The EC, which until now had acted in favour of the BJP-led government, has now become complicit in implementing the RSS/Sangh Parivar agenda,' the party noted. Describing these actions as an attack on democratic rights, the CPI(M) urged protests across the country on August 8. The CPI(M) also claimed that reports of 'targeted attacks on Bengali-speaking people' are emerging from many BJP-ruled states, like Delhi, Odisha, Assam, Haryana, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra. 'Bengalis are being identified and branded as Bangladeshis without any proper verification of their documents and without following the due process. Such individuals are being detained by the police and subjected to inhuman abuse and torture,' they said. 'There are also instances of people (including Indian citizens) being forcefully pushed back to Bangladesh, both through land and even via the sea route,' the statement mentioned further. Calling these developments violations of the right to freedom of movement granted to all citizens by the Indian Constitution, the CPI(M) demanded an immediate halt to these 'illegal detentions' and the protection of citizens' rights. Accusing the Assam government of evicting a large number of people from their rightful lands, the Left party said, 'The BJP and the RSS are trying to exploit ethnic differences across various North Eastern states to create divisions and establish their dominance. These moves will harm the unity and integrity of our country, particularly in a region that shares a long international border. Additionally, the CPI(M) called for the repeal of the Maharashtra Public Security Bill, arguing that its vague definitions of extreme Left-wing forces and similar organisations permit the targeting of any opposition group. The party also demanded immediate steps for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, emphasising the need to respect the people's mandate that elected the state government. In the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, the CPI(M) said it will try to mobilise other opposition parties in the parliament to vote against various bills, including the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, as well as amendments to the Atomic Energy Act and the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act. Furthermore, the party expressed concern about the government's proposed trade deals with the US and the EU, urging the Centre to consult stakeholders before embarking on an 'FTA signing spree.'
