Attorney for truck driver in I-35 deadly crash asks for release, bond reduction
AUSTIN (KXAN)— The attorney for the truck driver who was arrested following a deadly 18-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 in north Austin is asking for him to be released from jail after toxicology results found no drugs or alcohol in his system.
Solomun Weldekeal Araya, 37, was charged with intoxication manslaughter and assault charges following the crash that killed five people and injured 11 others March 13 near Parmer and Howard Lane.

Araya's attorney, Bristol Myers, also asked for his bond to be reduced to $1 in each case, due to 'a lack of probable cause,' according to court documents.
According to the toxicology lab report, obtained by KXAN, Araya's blood was tested for a range of inhalant drugs: Central nervous system medical depressants (Barbiturates), anticonvulsant medication used to treat seizures and nerve pain (Gabapentin) and cannabis. Araya's blood was also tested for alcohol.
While the tests came back negative, the analysis details from the toxicology report did not indicate whether Araya was tested for other drugs.
'The toxicology report speaks for itself,' he told KXAN reporter Jala Washington. 'There was nothing in his blood.'
Gene Anthes is a criminal defense attorney not connected with Weldekeal-Araya's case. Anthes reviewed the affidavit with initial details from an officer on the scene who did the field sobriety tests. The tests were extensive, and Araya showed indications of being intoxicated, per the examinations, according to the affidavit.
'They had enough there at least to make an arrest for intoxication manslaughter,' Anthes said.
However, Anthes reviewed witness video from the scene, obtained by KXAN, and said Araya did not appear to be intoxicated to him. Anthes added, some of the field sobriety test results could have been a result of Araya being in shock due to the traumatic situation.
'Sometimes you've got just people who just present themselves that just seem a little bit off, where, when (an) officer first interacts with them, that's their first judgment is that they're intoxicated,' Anthes said.

Peoria County Sheriff warns of scammers asking for $3K to power wash driveway
PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — The Peoria County Sheriff Office is warning people of a new scam which makes customers pay $3,000 to wash their driveway. The sheriff's department was made aware of the scam last week in Princeville and Limestone Township. Solicitors were going door to door, telling people that it would cost $175 to power wash their driveway, the department said in a Facebook post. When the solicitors would finish cleaning the driveway, they would inform the homeowners that the job actually cost $3,000, and it appears they were targeting 'elderly customers,' the post said. 'Always be cautious when dealing with solicitors and make sure to let our elderly community know about this scam,' the post said. The incidents are currently under investigation, the post said. 2 face charges after guns found near Pontiac graduation ceremony
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Two Pontiac men face weapons charges after the Oakland County Sheriff's Office said they intended to 'shoot up' a high school graduation on the southeast side of the state last week. Jamarion Hardiman, 20, and Deahveon Whaley, 19, are each accused of carrying a firearm with unlawful intent, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony and carrying a concealed weapon, according to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office. 2 planned to 'shoot up' graduation in Pontiac, sheriff says The graduation for a Pontiac charter school was held June 3 at the UWM Sports Complex. The prosecutor's office says surveillance video shows Hardiman and Whaley — neither of whom attended the charter school, authorities previously said — go in to the building together. Hardiman then attacked an 'unidentified individual,' prosecutors said. Security broke up the fight and got them to go outside, but the fight resumed in the parking lot. Surveillance video shows Hardiman was then hit by a car, though he seemed uninjured. Prosecutors say he and Whaley went back to their car, where Whaley put a gun in his waistband and Hardiman grabbed a backpack. Surveillance video later showed them crouching near cars in the parking lot, where investigators say they ditched the gun and backpack — which authorities say contained a second gun. '(The guns were) fully loaded with high-capacity magazines. Each weapon had a 40-round magazine,' Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said at a news conference Friday. 'I believe (deputies and security) probably prevented a mass shooting.' Whaley was arrested Wednesday. Hardiman was arrested within hours of the news conference, at which Bouchard asked the public for help finding him. The sheriff's office said a witness reported having seen a Snapchat post threatening to 'shoot up' the graduation. But the prosecutor's office said deputies have so far not been able to track that post down or get the name of the witness who reported seeing it. If that changes, the prosecutor's office said, more charges may be filed. Bouchard said both suspects have histories of violence and Hardiman was already on probation for a weapons offense.
