DeSantis signs law allowing child care center employees to undergo training to carry guns

Child care center employees can undergo training to carry guns at work under a law Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Wednesday.
The change is part of an expansion of the school guardian program that already allows public and private school employees to act as law enforcement when an active shooter enters their campus. The Florida Legislature established the program after the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that killed 17 people.
Currently, 53 counties participate in the program, which requires volunteer school employees to undergo a 144-hour training, according to a legislative analysis of the bill, SB 1470, which lawmakers passed unanimously.
'I think that's going to be something that people are going to like,' DeSantis said of the program expansion during a Wednesday press conference at Winter Haven Senior High.
Additionally, the law revises school door locking requirements, appeasing sheriffs' concerns. The new law allows classrooms to use temporary locks, requires school safety protocol to apply for 30 minutes before and after school, and exempts door locking for career and technical education classrooms where ventilation is required.
'I think what the Legislature did is they tweaked this. They made sure that, yes, we want to be able to create blocks to keep bad guys out, but we also want it to be practical,' the governor said. 'We want to make sure people are able to do their daily tasks and get to where they need to go.'
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd previously told Florida Phoenix that the door-locking law passed in 2024 was 'clunky and difficult to understand and easy to violate it even without the intent to violate it.'
DeSantis signed two other bills. HB 279 brings harsher penalties for false reporting of a crime, and HB 1099 gives police officers discretion over whether they should immediately arrest someone in a hospital, nursing home, or assisted living facility.

White House weighs inviting Zelensky to Trump's face-to-face meeting with Putin in Alaska

The White House is considering inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to President Trump's highly anticipated face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska next week. Discussions are underway about including Zelensky as the two world leaders prepare to meet in person on Friday in another bid to end Moscow's 41-month-old invasion of Ukraine, senior White House officials and insiders told NBC News Saturday. 'It's being discussed,' said one person briefed on the internal talks. US, Qatari mediators shaping package of proposals to end Israel-Hamas war, as IDF prepares to launch Gaza City takeover

As it prepares to sack Gaza City, Jewish state leaders are signaling to the US that their military takeover can be halted in favor of a cease-fire and the release of the remaining hostages held by Hamas, Israeli television reported Saturday. US, Qatari and Egyptian mediators are said to be discussing a comprehensive package of proposals to end the war, which include the release of the remaining 50 hostages — 20 of which are believed to still be alive. The deal on the table would also see full Israeli withdrawal, demilitarization of Palestinian armed groups and the exile of some Hamas military wing leaders. 4 Intense negotiations are ongoing this weekend to prevent further escalation of the war in Gaza. AFP via Getty Images A new civilian authority would be established in Gaza, according to the Times of Israel reports which cited sources familiar with the negotiations. The three countries are hashing out the proposal among themselves, before presenting it to Israel and Hamas. Mediators are also in intense negotiations with Israel to try and prevent the Jewish state from executing its military objective in Gaza, Saudi media reported. Israel's security cabinet approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan Friday to take full control of Gaza City in an effort to wipe out the terror group — a major escalation of its nearly two-year conflict. The timeline for the Israeli operation remains unknown. But even if the controversial plan moves ahead, Israeli TV said Tel Aviv would be willing to suspend the operation to strike a deal. 4 War in Gaza has been raging for almost two years. MOHAMMED SABER/EPA/Shutterstock This was amid a flurry of activity around the globe Saturday, aimed at trying to prevent further intensifying the war. White House special envoy Steve Witkoff met with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman al-Thani in Spain to also discuss plans to end the war. In Tel Aviv, mass protests for the release of the hostages drew tens of thousands of people, as speakers urged Israeli soldiers not to carry out the Gaza City takeover, the Times of Israel reported. 4 People protested in Tel Aviv as they do every Saturday for the release of the hostages and an end to the war. Anat Angrest, whose son Matan Angrest remains among the hostages, has called for people to protest the decision. 4 The parents of hostage Matan Angrest, Anat and Hagai and his sister Adi were among the protesters Saturday. REUTERS 'It was decided to expand the war and conquer even at the cost of Matan's life,' she wrote in a post on X. 'And the silence is killing.' 'Will you be with me when I call for everything to come to a stop, to strike?'

Rift emerges between allies Russia and Iran over $1.75B weapons deal, Putin's lack of support for Tehran

A rift is reportedly emerging between allies Russia and Iran, after Tehran feels it's gotten shortchanged in strongman Vladimir Putin's war against Ukraine. Moscow inked a $1.75 billion weapons deal with the Islamic Republic in 2023 — called at the time 'a covert partnership' — to get the designs to domestically produce Iran's infamous Shahed drones, which it had been importing since launching its full-scale invasion on Ukraine a year earlier. 4 Putin inked a deal with Iran in 2023 to get the designs for its Shahed drones. MIKHAIL METZEL/SPUTNIK/KREMLIN POOL/EPA/Shutterstock But Tehran has been growing increasingly frustrated with the little backing it's received from Russia since, CNN reported, citing a Western intelligence source. The resentment hit a high note during the Islamic Republic's 12-day war with Israel in June, when Tehran was expecting more than just words from its ally. 4 At the start of its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia paid as much as $200,000 for just one of these Iranian drones. NurPhoto via Getty Images Russian officials condemned Israel's attacked as 'unprovoked and unacceptable' and offered to mediate the conflict — but did not provide any military support to Iran, despite the two countries' partnership. Left to fend for itself, the Iranian regime was badly battered and weakened during the conflict. The Jewish state carried out numerous devastating aerial strikes on the Islamic Republic and its nuclear facilities, killing more than 30 Iranian commanders, at least 11 of the regime's top nuclear masterminds and sending the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei into hiding. 4 The unmanned drones are sometimes refered to as 'kamikaze' drones because they self-destruct after reaching their target. Middle East Images/AFP via Getty Images It showed Russia's 'purely transactional and utilitarian nature,' the intelligence official told the outlet. 'This explicit disengagement demonstrates that Russia never intervenes beyond its immediate interests, even when a partner – here an essential supplier of drones – is attacked,' they said. The Shahed drones — also referred to as kamikaze drones — have since become the cornerstone of Moscow's war machine, when hundreds of are often launched on Ukraine in a single evening. 4 Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei reportedly feels cheated from his deal with Putin. LEADER OFFICE/AFP via Getty Images To add insult to injury, Putin's men have taken Tehran's designs and developed better, cheaper versions — and failed to make some of its payments to Iran because of the Western sanctions placed on the Kremlin. It is unclear how much Moscow has yet to pay its counterpart toward the deal. Russia has also modernized the drones to make them more lethal and harder to bring down, according to Ukraine, leaving Tehran in the dark about the developments. It's also brought down the cost from $200,000 for one Shahed drone — to just $70,000. Intelligence officials believe as much as 90% of Shahed production is now done inside Russia, and satellite images show the largest drone factory — in Alabuga, 600 miles east of Moscow — is continuing to expand.
