'Perak Sports Carnival 2025 perfect for unearthing new talent for Sukma'

IPOH: The Perak Sports Carnival (Super) 2025 is the perfect platform to unearth new talent for the Perak contingent for the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026 in Selangor.
State Education, Higher Education, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah said the choice of sports contested in Super 2025 - table tennis, volley ball, basket ball, hockey, archery and sepak takraw - was made based on several factors, including the lack of participants from Perak in Sukma 2024.
"Through Super, we have the chance to assess directly the potential of athletes at the grassroots level who may have yet to be exposed to competitive competitions.
"Those identified have the potential to be absorbed into the Sukma trainee programme and coached as our preparations for Sukma 2026," he said when met by Bernama after the close of Super 2025 at the Ipoh City Council Sports Complex Badminton Arena near here today.
He added that Super was vital in ensuring the continuity of athlete development and talent scouting, and assisted in the nurturing of quality athletes to represent the state at the national level.
Mualim district emerged overall champion with a tally of 10 gold, seven silver and eight bronze, followed by Kinta with seven gold, six silver and a bronze, while Manjung finished third with three gold and six bronze in SUPER 2025, which began on July 10 ended today with the participation of over 1,200 athletes from 12 districts in the state. – BERNAMA

Tight security for cross-border boat race at Sungai Golok

KOTA BARU: The General Operations Force (GOF) will step up security at the Pohon Jambu post near Sungai Golok during the two-day Muhibbah Boat Race starting tomorrow along the Malaysia-Thailand border. The move comes as more than 1,000 visitors from both countries are expected to gather near the riverbank, which borders the Thai town of Sungai Golok. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said enhanced patrols and checks will be carried out to prevent any illegal cross-border activity during the event. "We don't want any parties taking advantage of the large crowd to commit illegal crossings. With the influx of visitors, including tourists from both sides, stricter control is essential," he told Bernama today. The traditional boat race, known locally as Yor Kong, will feature 40 teams, including five from Malaysia. The annual event is a highlight for locals, with residents of Kampung Pohon Jambu expected to gather along the riverbank with their families. The race is also expected to be officiated by Narathiwat Governor Trakul Thotham. – BERNAMA

Malaysia badminton team advances to WUG 2025 quarterfinals

MULHEIM AN DER RUHR: Malaysia's badminton team has stormed into the quarterfinals of the 2025 World University Games after a hard-fought 3-0 win against France in the round-of-16 at Westenergie Sporthalle. The French side pushed the Malaysian players to their limits, with all three matches going to three sets. Mixed doubles pair Wee Yee Hern and Clarissa San set the tone with a 15-13, 14-16, 15-12 victory over Lucas Renoir and Flavie Vallet. Men's singles player Jacky Kok Jing Hong followed with a 17-15, 13-15, 15-11 win against Enogat Roy, while Wong Ling Ching sealed the deal with a 15-10, 11-15, 15-13 triumph over Romane Cloteaux-Foucault. Jacky admitted the challenge of facing European players after a long gap. 'I'm happy with the win, but it was tough. I haven't played against European opponents in a while, so I made some unforced errors. I'll work on reducing them,' he said. Meanwhile, Malaysia's taekwondo and swimming teams faced setbacks. Ahmad Nor Iman Hakim Rakib lost 2-0 to Taiwan's Hao-Yu Hsu in the men's 68kg kyorugi event, while swimmer Andrew Goh Zheng Yen missed the semifinals despite finishing second in Heat Three of the men's 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:17.84. The athletics squad, arriving yesterday, will hold their first training session at Lohrheidestadion in Bochum today. - Bernama
