Malaysia Athletics deputy president hauled up over misappropriation of funds claims

Yahoo27-02-2025
Malaysia Athletics deputy president, Datuk Fadzil A. Bakar, received a show-cause letter from the national body yesterday following his comments to the media alleging misappropriation of funds in the organisation.
Fadzil replied to the show-cause letter the same day, justifying his comments.
It is understood that Fadzil has been hauled up to explain himself at an emergency council meeting at Wisma OCM in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.
Fadzil had last week told Twentytwo13 that a special committee was set up on July 29, 2024, to 'review the expenses for the Malam Anugerah Olahraga Malaysia 2024 (Awards Night)'.
The committee wanted to know why a member had asked to be reimbursed RM18,610 as payment for the venue when a sponsor had already paid the hotel, located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, in full.
The committee also said the member did not follow the 'laws and regulations made under Rule 18, Clause 11', which states that all financial activities require approval from the finance committee.
He added that the committee recommended the council member face the disciplinary board and explain the expenses, but 'the president ignored it'.
Malaysia Athletics president, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, on Feb 25 denied allegations of misappropriation of funds within the national body.
Shahidan also said that he was the one who stopped the payment to the council member, as he wanted to ensure there was no issue with the claims.

Will Malaysia Athletics clean house or collapse after today's AGM?

Malaysia Athletics will hold one of its most contentious annual general meetings yet later today, set against a backdrop of internal strife, unresolved disciplinary issues, and allegations of unethical conduct. There are those within who assume anyone can be bought, and take offence when reports hit out at them. Adding fuel to the fire are insiders who have plenty to say, but do not want to go on record when it matters most. More damaging was a press conference by Asian Championships silver medallist Muhammad Irfan Shamsuddin on Friday, claiming threats and intimidation from Malaysia Athletics president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (main image), and several other top officials. Irfan alleged that Shahidan had pressured him to follow specific directives, including whom he should or should not thank publicly for his medal. He also accused Malaysia Athletics of coercion, and of denying him the right to compete independently. The six-time SEA Games champion confirmed he has reported the matter to the Youth and Sports Minister, the National Sports Council, and World Athletics, urging a formal investigation into Malaysia Athletics' leadership. Shahidan, who is defending his presidency, vehemently denied the claims right after Irfan met the press, blaming a 'third party' for attempting to cause discord ahead of the AGM. Besides Shahidan, the other candidates for the presidency are Datuk Wira Mark Ling (Negeri Sembilan), Datuk Wan Hisham Wan Salleh (Terengganu), and Datuk Karim Ibrahim (Perak). Shahidan, who is Perlis Athletics Association president, received four nominations, while Ling received two. Karim and Wan Hisham each received one nomination. Karim and Wan Hisham have also been nominated for the deputy president's position, alongside three others – Datuk R. Annamalai (Pahang), Mohamat Hasaan (Sabah), and Sallehudin Safar (Johor). Ling and Wan Hisham are likely to join forces, with the former going for the No. 1 post and the latter settling for the deputy's seat. This follows a 'manifesto' released yesterday, co-signed by Ling and Wan Hisham, entitled: 'A role of service, not just a seat'. The first sign of trouble within Malaysia Athletics began in February when then-deputy president Datuk Fadzil A. Bakar raised allegations of false claims for the 2024 Malaysian Athletics Awards Night. Four months on, there has been no official update or outcome of the investigation, and Fadzil was subsequently removed from his post. Shahidan and Malaysia Athletics are also due in court on July 27, following a legal challenge brought by the Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Athletics Association (FTKLAA). The matter was heard at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on June 13, before being postponed. Another case may soon emerge. The national body's former president, Datuk SM Muthu is among six Selangor Athletics Association affiliates who allege 'procedural deficiencies' during the state's AGM on 26 April. The six affiliates – Petaling, Klang, Hulu Selangor, Sepang, Kuala Langat, and Hulu Langat – held an extraordinary general meeting on June 9 to nominate three delegates to attend Malaysia Athletics' AGM, but were stopped from submitting the list on June 12. Police were called to Wisma OCM, and they later recorded statements from four representatives of the Selangor affiliates. The six affiliates are studying their options. As the countdown to the AGM comes to an end, the stakes are higher than ever. With unresolved allegations, questions about ethics, and dissatisfaction among athletes and officials alike, today's elections could determine whether Malaysia Athletics can rebuild trust or remain mired in controversy.

KL to JB ETS launches Aug 2025 — a new era for Singapore-Malaysia travel

After years of anticipation, and a few delays since construction first began back in 2017, you'll finally be able to hop aboard the Electric Train Service (ETS) from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Bahru via the Gemas – JB Sentral route starting Aug 2025. Currently, the diesel-powered train journey between KL and JB takes a sluggish 7 hours. But thanks to this RM9.5 billion electrified double-tracking project, that travel time will be slashed to just 4 hours and 30 minutes. Along the way, expect stops at these stations: Segamat, Kluang, Kulai, and JB Sentral. The trains will cruise along at speeds of up to 140km/h. Malaysia has also received its first ETS 3 train set, and it's designed with passenger comfort in mind. With 312 seats, onboard WiFi, USB charging ports, and generous luggage space, you're set for a cosy journey. This development marks the final phase of the West Coast rail electrification project, first launched in 2011 under the administration of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. The government continues to prioritise this transformative project alongside the Johor Bahru – Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, which is scheduled to open by Jan 2027, according to Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. About 3K passengers will travel between Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur every day once the service is up and running. Meanwhile, as RTS construction picks up steam, citizens should take note: the Jalan Johor Bahru–Endau road will be fully closed from 3 Jun 2025 to 31 Dec 2026. Key roads affected include Jalan Tun Abdul Razak (towards Danga Bay), Jalan Station, Jalan Wong Ah Fook, and Jalan Lingkaran Dalam. Drivers on Jalan Tun Abdul Razak 1 can reroute via the road in front of Masjid Habib Hassan Al-Attas, make a U-turn near Danga City Mall, and then turn left onto Jalan Lingkaran Dalam. Let's hope there will be no more delays this time so we can all enjoy travelling without having to buy a car! Ex-Malaysian footballer, coach K. Rajagobal's ‘Inilah Saya' book a nine-year project in the making

Datuk K. Rajagobal was standing at the cashier of an eatery in Publika, Kuala Lumpur, waiting to pay for his meal, when he was approached by a gentleman who recognised the legendary sports figure. Others in the shop had their eyes on him, knowing very well who he was. That is the power of 'King Raja'. Despite having played for Selangor and Malaysia some four decades ago, and later gaining national fame as coach from 2009 to 2013, Rajagobal continues to attract attention wherever he goes. Much has been written and said about Rajagobal, but he is best remembered as the man behind the euphoria that swept the nation when his squad won the 2009 SEA Games gold medal and the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Cup in 2010. Malaysians proudly wore the national jersey again, and many believed that more glory was on the horizon. Unfortunately, Malaysia has not won either tournament since. Fresh from recording a Julang podcast episode with seasoned journalist Rizal Hashim and Twentytwo13 editor Haresh Deol on May 29, Rajagobal sat down with the duo to talk about his book Inilah Saya (This is Me), which will be showcased at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair at the World Trade Centre tomorrow. In his trademark white shirt, adorned with a sewn-on Jalur Gemilang on the left, Rajagobal spoke over teh tarik (tea) and roti bakar (toast). 'After winning the AFF Cup in 2010, many told me to write a book about my journey and success. But it wasn't the right time,' he said. 'When I left the FA of Malaysia (FAM) in 2013, I thought it might finally be the right time. My eldest son, Kanason, told me, 'Appa, why don't you write a book?' I was still busy coaching, but when I returned from Sarawak in 2016, that's when I decided to start working on it.' 'It's been a nine-year project because of several delays. I was coaching PKNS FC between 2018 and 2019, so things stalled then. But once that ended, I got back to working on the book.' Asked why he decided to write it, Rajagobal said: 'I want to share my journey – the challenges I faced, my struggles, my hardships. I also want the younger generation to realise that anything can be achieved if we are mentally strong. Just focus on hard work, and you won't be easily defeated. You'll fall many times, but you'll get up.' 'I also hope this book inspires, motivates, and encourages Malaysians to be patriotic. The younger generation is our future.' 'I would love to see other legends and future players from various sports document their journeys and achievements. It allows others to learn from different experiences and become better individuals.' Priced at RM49, Inilah Saya is available at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair. Rajagobal will hold a meet-and-greet session at the fair tomorrow (May 29) from 11am to 1.30pm. The book is also available online at Karangkraf Mall.
