Lee Corso to step away from ESPN College GameDay this fall
One of the icons of ESPN's popular College GameDay show is hanging up the headgear.
Lee Corso, who has been with the show since its beginning in 1987, announced Wednesday that his final appearance on the show will be during Week 1 of the 2025 college football season. Famous for donning headgear to make his pick for the game of the week set on location, Corso first started that tradition by pulling the Ohio State mascot head of Brutus on during a show on October 5, 1996, a game OSU won over Penn State in the 'Shoe, 38-7.
ESPN does not announce the show's location until after the schedule of games every week, but will typically announce plans for Week 1 as things get closer to the season. This year, Week 1 is set for August 30, and there's a good chance he might go out the way he came in, in Columbus for that game between Ohio State and Texas. But ... we'll have to see. It would be poetic.
Corso released a statement of gratitude as he approaches 90 years old this year.
'My family and I will be forever indebted for the opportunity to be part of ESPN and College GameDay for nearly 40 years. I have a treasure of many friends, fond memories and some unusual experiences to take with me into retirement," Corso said in a statement. 'ESPN has been exceptionally generous to me, especially these past few years. They accommodated me and supported me, as did my colleagues in the early days of College GameDay. Special thanks to Kirk Herbstreit for his friendship and encouragement. And lest I forget, the fans … truly a blessing to share this with them. ESPN gave me this wonderful opportunity and provided me the support to ensure success. I am genuinely grateful.'
All told, Corso has put the OSU headgear on 45 times, more than any other program. We're going to go out on a limb and say that it'll be 46 on August 30 on the banks of the Olentangy.
Thanks for being a part of a lot of college football fan memories.

Wisconsin football extends a walk-on offer to an in-state fullback
Wisconsin football extends a walk-on offer to an in-state fullback Wisconsin football has extended a preferred walk-on offer to in-state class of 2026 recruit McCoy Smith. The offer followed his participation in the program's development camp on Tuesday. Smith, who plays defensive linemen at Waunakee High School, noted that the Badgers offered him to play fullback at the collegiate level -- the position he played during Tuesday's camp. That last note should be music to the ears of Wisconsin football fans, especially after Phil Longo's air raid scheme mostly eliminated the position. 247Sports lists five programs interested in Smith: Minnesota Duluth, Minnesota State Mankato, Northern Iowa, Sioux Falls and Winona State. However, it does not list scholarship offers from any of those programs. Wisconsin's walk-on offer is his only one from a Football Bowl Subdivision program. The 5-foot-9, 214-pound athlete totaled 11 sacks at defensive line as a junior in 2024. His output earned a First-Team All-Conference honor and the title of Defensive Lineman of the Year. Whether the in-state recruit accepts Wisconsin's walk-on offer or chooses to play elsewhere, it is good news that the Badgers are again prioritizing the fullback position. Texas A&M fans celebrate Jace LaViolette's historic college career
Texas A&M fans celebrate Jace LaViolette's historic college career It's unofficially official that Texas A&M junior outfielder Jace LaViolette's playing days in the Maroon & White have ended. With him projected as a top-15 pick, MLB is calling his name, and he hears it loud and clear, posting his farewell message to Aggieland on social media. We all knew this day was coming. Even with hope that NIL deals could persuade him to stay, the writing was on the wall after his breakout freshman year, his draft entry was inevitable. So, it's best to wish him well and cherish the memorable moments he gave fans over three years. The All-American leaves A&M as the career leader in home runs (68), walks (169), and ranks third in RBIs (202). Even after a challenging season, he finished the year on his terms. After suffering a broken hand from a pitch in the SEC tournament, he could've easily shut it down without second thoughts. However, he fought through the pain, returned the next day, and collected a few hits against a strong LSU pitching staff. For the extremely optimistic Aggie fans, there's a .01% chance LaViolette has a change of heart, declines his MLB contract, and returns to A&M. Anything can happen, but for now, we wish Jace a successful and healthy pro career. Below are some of the reactions to Jace LaViolette's farewell post to Texas A&M fans. Jace will be missed One of the best to ever do it Thanks for the good times Jace It's going to take a lot to make Jace miss a game The talent was undeniable from the beginning Aggie legend Lord Tubbington set the standard for the new generation of Aggies MLB Bound Proud Jace decided to join the Aggie family No. 17 rewrote the record books There is not a dry eye on X Jace won't be forgotten anytime soon Contact/Follow us @AggiesWire on X and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Texas A&M news, notes and opinions.
