Wootton Bassett colt to attract strong early interest at Canterbury

The Age08-06-2025
Breeding buffs and punters alike will be in raptures before one horse has even left the stalls at Monday's holiday Canterbury meeting.
Fittingly on the King's Birthday weekend, some of the most royally bred youngsters in the country step out for the first time in a two-year-old opener for the boys at set weights over 1250m.
Heading the lineup is the debutant colt Central Coast for the all-conquering Chris Waller and James McDonald combination.
An early favourite with bookmakers, Central Coast is beautifully bred, being by UK-reared global sprint sire Wootton Bassett, and out of dual group 1-winning mare Sunlight, who won the Newmarket Hcp and William Reid Stakes in the same season.
Given two impressive trials on rain-affected ground, Central Coast looks primed for a big debut for what is a steeped and well-established group of owners.

He drew to get a lovely trail on what should be a gradually improving Soft 7 surface or even firmer, with the track drying out through Sunday and into Monday.
But there's no shortage of impressively bred rivals, starting with Cabriole, a powerful-looking colt by superstar Lonhro from the high-class Group 1-winning mare Flit.
Starting his career also behind two progressive trials, winning the latest comfortably at Warwick Farm on a Heavy 9, Cabriole was on the clear second line of early betting.

Match suspended after star rushed to hospital after suffering horror injury

An English cricket star was rushed to hospital with a horror injury as a Hundred match was suspended. Adam Hose suffered a serious ankle injury while playing for the Trent Rockets in their win over Southern Brave, The Sun reports. As Hose attempted to field a ball just inside the boundary rope, his right leg slipped underneath as his body weight came down on top. The impact saw his ankle become dislocated which saw him instantly grab his leg and be left in excruciating pain. A screen was put around him as he received treatment from medical staff on the field. He was then loaded into an ambulance and rushed to hospital for further treatment. Despite Hose's setback, the Rockets rallied to beat Brave by four wickets. But they now face a lengthy period of time without Hose in the side. It can take anywhere between six and 12 weeks to recover from a dislocated ankle. Scans need to determine whether Hose requires surgery, which could rule him out for an even longer period of time. Fans were quick to send their best wishes to Hose. One said: 'I have never seen an injury like that in a cricket game.' Another declared: 'Get well soon Adam.' One noted: 'One of the most horrific injuries I've seen on a cricket field.' Another added: 'This is absolutely mad, hope he recovers.' The Hundred's official account also tweeted: 'We wish Adam Hose a speedy recovery after an injury to his leg in the field.'

New-look Liverpool kick off Premier League season after spending spree

Reigning champions Liverpool kick off the Premier League season on Friday with Europe's richest league strengthened by a remarkable £2 billion ($2.7 billion) spending splurge. Liverpool will include £100 million midfield signing Florian Wirtz and new forward Hugo Ekitike in their squad to face Bournemouth at Anfield, among a handful of new recruits. They are favourites to retain their crown but the unknown factor is the potential effect of the tragic death of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota in a car crash in Spain in July. Arsenal, one club hoping to topple Liverpool, face an immediate test of their title credentials against a revamped Manchester United on Sunday. Newcastle are set to be without unsettled star striker Alexander Isak for a tough trip to Aston Villa -- the Swede is wanted by Liverpool. Here are several issues to watch on the opening weekend: Big-spending Liverpool seek harmony Liverpool have changed their careful shopping habits and suddenly outspent their rivals, overhauling a squad fresh from winning the league. Only once since 2007, when Manchester City did it in 2019, have the Premier League champions been the biggest-spending English club in the market. A spree that has already seen Liverpool's US owners approve £260 million on Wirtz, Ekitike and defenders Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, is far from over with Isak and Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi linked with moves to Anfield. Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez have been sold. The transition has shown teething problems in pre-season with a slick attack let down by a porous defence. Manager Arne Slot is confident his side are ready as they seek to retain the title for the first time since 1984. "I think we've lost five to six players that played quite a lot of minutes for us last season and we brought in four new ones, so then it's normal that there's a little bit of adaptation," said Slot. "But we are definitely ready for the league to start." Sesko and Gyokeres seek scoring start Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres are set to make their Premier League debuts for United and Arsenal respectively at Old Trafford after a summer that could have seen them line up the other way on Sunday. Arsenal were linked with a move to Sesko for over a year before deciding to bet on Gyokeres as the man to fire them to a first Premier League title since 2004 for a fee that could rise to £66 million. The Gunners have finished second for the past three seasons, lacking a clinical finisher to take that final step towards being champions Gyokeres netted a remarkable 97 times in 102 games in two years at Sporting Lisbon, much of which came under United's now-manager Ruben Amorim. Instead of being reunited with the Swede, Amorim has overhauled his attack with the signings of Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha at a combined cost of over £200 million. United, one of the world's richest clubs, had to spend big after their worst season since being relegated in 1974. In Amorim's first year in charge, the Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League and failed to qualify for Europe, losing the Europa League final. Both clubs desperately need a fast start and the battle between the two new number nines will go a long way to deciding the outcome. Villa and Newcastle chase 'big six' As the Premier League's traditional "big six" of Liverpool, Manchester City, United, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham have flexed their financial muscle in the transfer market, Villa and Newcastle have been squeezed out. Constrained by the need to meet financial sustainability rules, Villa's only major signing has been Ivorian stiker Evann Guessand from Nice. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has had to field constant questions about Isak, who sat out pre-season preparations in a bid to force through a move to Liverpool. Despite having Saudi owners, the Magpies' attempts to replace the Swede have repeatedly fallen down, with most of their targets going elsewhere. But both Villa and Newcastle have consistently outperformed some of the "big six" in recent seasons and will be targeting Champions League qualification again this season. kca/gj/pb

EPL SuperCoach: Robbie Slater team reveal, fantasy advice

Goals galore, assists aplenty and dogged defending – my SuperCoach EPL team covers all bases. Starting at the back, it's hard to go past Liverpool's Brazilian gloveman Alisson . Having a good goalkeeper is really important, and Alisson is among the best in the Premier League and with Liverpool favourites to go back- to-back, he's a good pick-up. Alisson's selection also contributed to my decision to choose his Reds teammate Virgil van Dijk among my defenders. The Dutchman is a towering figure in front of Alisson, and having the pair as part of my spine should lead to plenty of SuperCoach points. The only concern is that Liverpool conceded too many goals in the pre-season, but once the real stuff starts, bank on it being a different story. Virgil van Dijk is one of the linchpins of Robbie Slater's team. Another Dutchman, Tottenham's Mickey van de Ven (5.28m), is partnering van Dijk in the heart of my defence. We know his quality, including his lightning speed. It's not a surprise that he was a favourite of Ange Postecoglou during the former Socceroos coach's time in charge of Spurs. A worry perhaps is van de Ven's injury history, as well as Tottenham's poor Premier League form last season, but his selection is worth the game. Either side of the Dutch pair in my back four are Manchester United's Danish left-back Patrick Dorgu (4.4m) and Everton captain and right-back, Irishman Seamus Coleman (3.9m). Coleman has a lot of experience and can score the odd goal. He's also available at a good price, and Everton will have a decent season. Dorgu's selection is more of a risk, but Manchester United will have a better campaign than last season's disaster, and if he's not getting selected, I've got the insurance of Spurs' Italian left-back Destiny Udogie (4.64m) on the bench. James Ward-Prowse (top) is locked in to Robbie Slater's SuperCoach team. A combination of quality and value for money has me confident of securing a lot of midfield points. Chelsea's Cole Palmer (12.72m) probably didn't really have a good second-half of last season, but he came alive in the recent FIFA Club World Cup, producing a man-of-the-match performance in his team's 3-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the final. A worry is Chelsea's lack of a decent break after the Club World Cup, and that it might catch up on Cole as the season progresses, but there is no doubting his class. Manchester City's Phil Foden (7.8m) has similar quality. He sets up plenty of goals and can find the back of the net himself. City will challenge for the title, with Foden likely to be a key contributor. Elsewhere in my midfield, West Ham's James Ward-Prowse (5.36m) and Aston Villa's Scotsman John McGinn (4.84m) are good value for what they can provide. Ward-Prowse does well wherever he goes, and he's a free-kick specialist, while McGinn is a real force and somewhat of an unsung hero for a Villa side that should again perform this season. John McGinn is a talisman for Aston Villa. Up front, I haven't been scared to splash the cash, and with good reason. Norwegian ace Erling Haaland (11.57m) is going to score a stack of goals for Manchester City. He's 11 to 10 on with the bookies to finish the season as the EPL's top goalscorer, way ahead of anyone else in terms of odds, including Liverpool star Mo Salah, who topped the charts last season with his 29 goals. People say Haaland had a bit of an off 2024-25 campaign, but he still scored 23 EPL goals. Haaland's fellow Scandinavian Alexander Isak (11.61m) will also regularly find the back of the net, regardless of whether he stays at Newcastle or moves to Liverpool, which is what the Swedish marksman wants to do. Robbie Slater isn't put off by the uncertainty about Alexander Isak's future. Limited funds made it tricky choosing a bench. Udogie's selection has already been explained, while there is plenty of hype about Chelsea's Belgian midfielder Romeo Lavia (3.9m). My bench striker is Patrick Bamford (3.9m) because if Leeds are going to score goals, he will be the one netting them. Reserve goalkeeper is cheap Newcastle option Mark Gillespie (3.5m). He won't play for the Magpies this season, so if Alisson gets injured, I will have to do some work in the transfer market, but that's the beauty of SuperCoach EPL. Robbie Slater Contributor Robbie Slater is an accomplished former football player with a long career in both Australia and overseas, scoring 67 goals in 447 appearances. He played 44 games for the Socceroos between 1988-97 and has since become one of the most influential media voices in the game. @RobbieSlater17
