#MandelaDay2025: [VIDEO] Boksburg honours Madiba with acts of kindness
This as the world marks International Nelson Mandela Day under the theme 'It's still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity'.
Boksburg Civic Centre
At the Boksburg Civic Centre, various local businesses converged on the lawn where they, in celebration of Mandela Day, handed out thousands of hot dogs, fruits and snack packs with sweets and other treats to thousands of the needy and vulnerable members of the community.
Beneficiaries received more than just food. They were also treated to an uplifting live performance by a local saxophonist throughout the about four-hour-long event.
According to one of the event organisers, Aida's Denver Ramnath, they fed approximately 3 000 people with more than 5 000 hot dogs, sweets, fruits and soft drinks from the various local businesses.
'We just want to thank the local businesses that contributed to the success of today, taking time out of their busy schedule to feed the less fortunate than us in the community. This is our annual event, and every year the initiative gets bigger. Businesses are committed to making it a success, as it is just our small way of giving back to the community on Mandela Day.
'It's heartwarming to see smiles, especially the children's faces as they receive and enjoy their food.'
Why Mandela Day matters
'We are doing this because Madiba's life and work left an indelible mark on us as society, and these heartfelt gestures are our small way to show gratefulness.'
Around the world, organisations and individuals are dedicating at least 67 minutes of their time to uplift communities, reflecting the 67 years the first black president spent in jail as well as his contribution to the struggle for democracy.

Shabalala bus driver recognised for exceptional driving skills
Buscor's annual Driver of the Year competition recognised the hard work and exceptional driving skills of its employees. The event was hosted on June 28. During the ceremony, Joseph Manzini (56), who has been driving buses for nine years, was recognised as the overall winner – the Top One Driver of the Year. Manzini said the award was unexpected, even though he knew he had strong driving skills and that his passengers feel safe on his bus. 'I am so happy that my hard work is recognised. This will push me even harder to continue being the best at what I do – which is driving,' said Manzini. He transports people with different personalities every day and must remain calm at all times, as image and professionalism are important. Transnet Engineering plants seeds of hope to mark Mandela Day and tackle hunger beyond July 18
Transnet Engineering has extended the spirit of Mandela Day well beyond July 18 with a meaningful, hands-on campaign aimed at tackling poverty and food insecurity. Transnet Engineering launched a plant a garden campaign in July, rallying its employees nationwide to support community-based food gardens as a living tribute to this year's Mandela Day theme 'It's still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity'. 'At Transnet Engineering, we remain committed to developing the communities we operate in. Community gardening provides a way for people to grow their own fresh food, build community bonds, improve mental and physical health, and feed one another. It also empowers communities to take full responsibility for this cost-effective yet sustainable initiative,' said Zodwa Mashishi, executive manager of corporate affairs for Transnet Engineering. Mashishi said the initiative not only honours the legacy of Nelson Mandela but also sows the seeds for long-term sustainability, resilience and self-reliance in communities nationwide. The campaign called on employees across the country to nominate deserving nonprofit organisations (NPOs) within their communities, particularly those with available backyard space suitable for vegetable gardening. According to Transnet Engineering, the initiative is a contribution to the fight against poverty and food insecurity, and a reflection of the group's continued commitment to uplifting the communities in which it operates.

Dludluma road to facilitate economic opportunities for community
The project to upgrade the Dludluma D2950 road from gravel to tar is progressing well. The upgrade, which falls within the Nkomazi Local Municipality, spans from the D797 to the Dludluma ring road. The Mpumalanga MEC for public works, roads and transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, conducted an oversight visit on July 4 and expressed satisfaction with the work completed thus far. Thomo met with community representatives at the Dludluma community hall on September 27, 2024, where he introduced the appointed contractor and participated in a ceremonial sod-turning. The R113m tender was awarded to Sibusisiwe Construction, a locally based company. Once complete, the D2950 will serve as a key access route for essential services and function as the main bus route for local commuters. The road is expected to greatly improve mobility and provide better access to economic and public service opportunities. Thomo said the community had long awaited the upgrade and that the department remains committed to ensuring timely and successful delivery.
