Jeremy Clarkson makes stance clear F1 axe looms for fans' favourite

Daily Mirror18-05-2025

Formula 1 races at Imola in Italy for possibly the last time this weekend and former Top Gear and The Grand Tour host Jeremy Clarkson will be among those sad to see it go
Imola looks likely to lose its status as a Formula 1 venue after this weekend's Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. But many will be sad to see it exit the sport and Jeremy Clarkson is clearly one of those who would love to see F1 find a way to continue racing there.
He wrote on social media: "Imola may not produce the best racing but to drive round, it's my favourite track in the world." But despite the former Top Gear presenter's seal of approval, the writing looks to be on the wall for the Italian venue.

Imola is out of contract this year and is one of only two current venues which does not have a legal guarantee of hosting a 2026 race. The other is Las Vegas, which has become a centrepiece of F1's annual schedule and an extension on that front is a mere formality.

Next year will see the debut of the Madrid Grand Prix, which will take place on a new street circuit in the Spanish capital. And, with the calendar unlikely to expand beyond 24 races per year right now, it looks set to be Imola which makes room in 2026.
No announcement has yet been made over the Italian track's future by F1 bosses, though chief executive Stefano Domenicali recently hinted at its potential exit from the sport when he said: "It will be increasingly difficult to have two races in the same country because interest in Formula 1 is growing."
The obvious exception is the United States, which has three annual races in Las Vegas, Miami and Austin because it is such a lucrative market for F1. But with the Italian Grand Prix being homed at Monza, north-east of Milan, and plenty of other cities across the globe wanting to grab a slice of the pie, there seems to be little hope for Imola.
Imola has disappeared from the sport before. It was once the venue of the San Marino Grand Prix for many years but that arrangement ended after the 2006 race and it was only in 2020, when F1 needed to cobble together a race calendar at short notice after the previous one was ruined by the Covid pandemic, that it returned.
If the 2025 race is to be its last in F1, at least for a while, then the venue will be deeply missed by many. That includes Clarkson who, when replying to fans, spoke of why he visited Imola so often when he was working on Top Gear and The Grand Tour.

He wrote: "We did [go there], whenever possible. I just love the fact that the [start/finish] straight, isn't. But at Imola, you whizz past people hanging their washing out. And they've nailed the safety fence to the trees."
It is possible that Imola could become a rotational venue to make sure that the sport does at least return regularly. If that were to happen, it would follow in the footsteps of the Belgian Grand Prix with the iconic Spa-Francorchamps circuit also no longer guaranteed an annual slot in F1.
Circuit Zandvoort in the Netherlands has already announced that the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix will be its last. And the future of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is very much up in the air with its contract also expiring in 2026 and that new Madrid race angling to take over as the official Spanish Grand Prix in the future.

Two of Scottish football's Italian contingent could be set for moves this summer in what could be a busy transfer window for Scots abroad. It was a hugely successful season for a number of Scottish players in Italy, with Scott McTominay and Billy Gilmour winning Serie A with Napoli and Lewis Ferguson lifting the Coppa Italia with Bologna. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad However, down in the second tier of Italian football, there was another Scottish success story - with left-back Josh Doig playing a big part in Sassuolo winning Serie B and earning immediate promotion back to the top flight. Josh Doig helped Sassuolo win promotion back to Serie A this season. | Getty Images Doig has been a regular for Sassuolo this season after joining them from Hellas Verona 18 months ago, and now the 23-year-old is being linked with a move to Juventus. According to reports in Italy, new Juve manager Igor Tudor's transfer priority is new wing-backs and the Croatian coach has been impressed by Doig's development since moving to Italy from Hibs three years ago. Doig is currently with the Scotland squad ahead of their friendly away to Liechtenstein on Monday night and could win his first cap if selected in Vaduz. But his form with Sassuolo, where he has been one of their chief attacking outlets down the left flank, has caught the eye of Tudor, who is expected to play a 3-5-2 formation at Juventus next season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Doig's price-tag He has also been linked with Bologna wing-back Dan Ddoye, who is also on international duty right now with Switzerland. And if Tudor was to launch a bid for Doig, it could cost Juventus upwards of £12 million to land him, as he contracted to Sassuolo until 2028. Doig came through the youth ranks at Hibs and was part of the team under Jack Ross that finished third in the Premiership during the 2020/21 campaign. He was sold to Verona in the summer of 2022 and then moved on Sassuolo, although he nearly signed for Marseille in France before the transfer fell apart at the last minute. Another former Hibs player could be on the move in Italy, with midfielder Liam Henderson weighing up his future after his contract at Empoli expired last month. A Celtic academy graduate, Henderson was part of the Hibs team that won the Scottish Cup in 2016. He made the move to Italy in 2018 with Bari and has remained there ever since, playing for Verona, Lecce, Palermo and Empoli. It now appears, though, that the 29-year-old could be on his way back to British football. It has been reported that English Championship side Bristol City are weighing up a move for the out-of-contract deep-lying midfielder. Swansea City had also been suggested as a potential suitor, but cold water has been poured on that link by Welsh media outlets.

Jeremy was seen testing tractors last month on an epsode of Amazon Prime's Clarkson's Farm. Farm manager Kaleb Cooper, 26, was gobsmacked at the size of the Lambo he chose. An engineer who saw Jeremy, Kaleb and a film crew at Monday's sale in Sutton, near Ely, Cambs, said: 'He was right next to his huge tractor. 'It was great to see him. I'm a fan. 'I watched every Top Gear with my dad and watch the Clarkson's Farm with my son.' It is not clear whether Jeremy will now go back to his cherished £40,000 Lamborghini Trattori R8 270 DCR tractor. When asked for comment, auctioneers Cheffins remained tight-lipped. But they posted a video on Instagram of the tractors up for auction yesterday (9) - including a green Lambo. One poster wrote: "Is that Clarksons Lamborghini?" and a dozen people responded with a 'thumbs up'. 4 A young fan spots Jeremy's troublesome tractor at the auction Credit: Bav Media
