LAIKA'S ParaNorman Returns to the Big Screen in Remastered RealD 3D for Exclusive Halloween Run Featuring a Brand-New CG Short Film Starring Anna Kendrick and Finn Wolfhard
As with the record-breaking 15 th Anniversary 2024 re-release of Coraline in 2D and RealD 3D, LAIKA will bring the gloriously remastered ParaNorman (originally released in 2012) to global audiences in partnership with Trafalgar Releasing in international markets premiering Thursday, October 23 and Fathom Entertainment in the US premiering Saturday, October 25.
LAIKA's delightful second film, which garnered multiple awards including Oscar®, BAFTA® and Golden Globe nominations, as well as multiple ANNIE Awards®, was written by Chris Butler (Missing Link, ParaNorman) and directed by Butler and Sam Fell (Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget). Offered in stunning, newly remastered RealD 3D and 2D formats, ParaNorman's return launches a year-long 20 th Anniversary celebration of LAIKA, it was announced today at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The studio's new, CG animated short film, ParaNorman: The Thrifting is directed by LAIKA's lead character designer Thibault LeClercq and written by Chris Butler. The short features the voice work of Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard and Anna Kendrick reprising her role of Norman's older sister, Courtney Babcock. Produced in association with Passion Pictures, ParaNorman: The Thrifting will be attached to the re-release screenings.
Coraline's re-release success last year signaled an audience desire for repertory cinema as moviegoers re-discover older films, especially accessible horror titles that families can enjoy together. Coraline's return scored $56M in worldwide box office, making it one of the biggest global film re-releases of the past decade and the highest grossing stop-motion movie of all time.
'ParaNorman was a breakthrough film for LAIKA -- emotionally rich, visually daring, and proudly weird in all the right ways,' said LAIKA's Chief Marketing & Operations Officer David Burke. 'Bringing it back to theaters in stunning remastered 3D, paired with a brand-new short film, is an invitation for audiences to rediscover the heart and humor of Norman's world -- or experience it for the first time. Today, horror has become a shared family ritual, and ParaNorman sits right at the intersection of spooky and meaningful. It's the perfect 'starter horror' -- a gateway into genre storytelling that's as thoughtful as it is thrilling.'
'Fathom is very pleased to extend our distribution partnership with LAIKA and bring the critically acclaimed ParaNorman back to US audiences this Halloween in both 2D and RealD 3D and with the exclusive consumer added value feature, ParaNorman: The Thrifting,' said Ray Nutt, Fathom Entertainment's Chief Executive Officer. ' Coraline consumers voted with their wallets last year, resulting in approximately 70% of the record-breaking $34M+ U.S. theatrical box office coming in 3D. ParaNorman is the ideal, spooky follow-up for audiences to enjoy on the big screen later this year.'
'Following the incredible global response to Coraline's theatrical re-release, which surpassed its original box office run in some international markets, we're thrilled to partner with LAIKA once again to bring ParaNorman back to the big screen this Fall,' said Kymberli Frueh, SVP of Programming and Content Acquisitions at Trafalgar Releasing. ' ParaNorman is a visually stunning, emotionally resonant film that deserves to be experienced in theaters -- both in 2D and in vividly remastered RealD 3D. We can't wait for audiences around the world to rediscover this groundbreaking stop-motion classic.'

Alicia Vikander Says ‘The Danish Girl' Feels ‘Extremely Dated,' 10 Years After Casting Eddie Redmayne as Trans Woman: ‘At Least' It Made Trans Subjects ‘Discussed'
Tom Hooper's biographical drama 'The Danish Girl' turns 10 years old this fall, and its Oscar-winning star Alicia Vikander says it 'already feels extremely dated.' Inspired by the lives of Danish painters Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener, the film stars Eddie Redmayne as a transgender artist who was one of the early recipients of gender reassignment surgery. The actor earned an Oscar nomination, while Vikander won best supporting actress. Despite the awards attention, the film garnered backlash for casting cis actor Redmayne as a trans pioneer. 'I'm the first one to say it already feels extremely dated, which I think is a good thing,' Vikander told British Vogue. 'At that time, it was a pivot in something that it made [the subject of transgender lives] at least discussed. I hope that in a way it was a bit of an eye-opener and opened the way for art to cover those themes.' More from Variety Na Hong-Jin's New Film 'Hope,' Starring Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Hoyeon, Taylor Russell, Hwang Jung-min and More, Sets Summer 2026 Release (EXCLUSIVE) 'Handmaid's Tale' and 'Day of the Jackal' Producers on Rewriting Literary Worlds With TV Adaptations 'The Day of the Jackal' Star Eddie Redmayne on Tackling Iconic Characters, Loving 'The White Lotus' and the How Acting Is the Perfect Front for a Spy Redmayne expressed his regret over accepting the role of Lili Elbe several years after the movie's release, telling The Sunday Times: 'No, I wouldn't take it on now. I made that film with the best intentions, but I think it was a mistake…The bigger discussion about the frustrations around casting is because many people don't have a chair at the table. There must be a leveling, otherwise we are going to carry on having these debates.' Vikander told Insider shortly before Redmayne went public with his regret that she understood the backlash against 'The Danish Girl.' While she maintained that her co-star gave a 'wonderful' performance,' she also called the movie 'a learning experience' when it comes to casting. 'I totally understand the criticism that has been out there, because we need to make change and we need to make sure that trans men and women actually get a foot in and get work,' Vikander said at the time. 'My only concern is that we may need to get to a point in the end where we have trans women and men playing cis characters. Because that is the main thing, you know?' Redmayne tried to get ahead of the backlash when the movie opened in theaters in November 2015. He told IndieWire that 'many trans people worked on the film,' adding: 'I hope there's a day when there are more trans actors and trans actresses playing trans parts, but also cisgender parts. And I hope — as an actor one hopes — that one should be able to play any sort of part if one plays it with a sense of integrity and responsibility.' Willow Smith Calls Out People's Reaction to Her ‘P—-‘ Post
After facing backlash over her recently uploaded crying photo on Instagram, which also featured a contentious caption, has come out to respond to her critics with yet another social media post. In a recent update, the up-and-coming singer gave a strongly worded reply to the people who had called her out on her controversial post of late. Here's how Willow Smith reacted to backlash over viral photo On August 15, Friday, the 'pain for fun' singer took to her Instagram stories to share a short clip of herself, calling everyone who reacted negatively to her crying photo 'slow.' 'Y'all n—– so dense, y'all forgot funny existed,' Willow Smith said. She added, 'Y'all n—– like molasses–slow. Also sweet, though. Be sweet, too, yeah. But it was funny, shit!' Smith's response comes after several internet users shared their displeasure over the crying photo she posted on August 13 on Instagram. The said image featured a close-up of the 24-year-old's teary face, along with the caption, 'Who ate all the p—-?' Since then, she has garnered immense backlash from the general public, with many even pointing fingers at her parents, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, as well as the dynamics of her family. Notably, the Oscar-winning actor had recently shared his regrets over introducing the concept of radical honesty to his children. During his last appearance on the UK radio show Heart Breakfast with Jamie and Amanda, he noted, 'We made a very, very, very terrible mistake with our children and we went with radical honesty.' Will Smith then added, 'The deal was if you tell the truth, you won't get in trouble. The only way you can get in trouble in this house is if we find out you did something and you don't tell the truth. It's a mistake, it's terrible, because they do whatever they want and then just come tell you.' Originally reported by Apoorv Rastogi on Mandatory.
