Detroit Tigers bring back 'pitching chaos' strategy for win, led by Brant Hurter

Yahoo12-06-2025
BALTIMORE — The Detroit Tigers listed right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long as the starting pitcher for Tuesday, June 10, in the first of three games against the Baltimore Orioles.
Only, he didn't take the mound in the first inning.

Instead, manager A.J. Hinch changed the pitching plan for Tuesday's game, opting for the opener-bulk strategy.
It was 'pitching chaos' all over again.
Instead of Gipson-Long, the Tigers used left-handed reliever Brant Hurter as an opener to combat the five left-handed hitters throughout the Orioles' lineup, including Jackson Holliday and Gunnar Henderson among the first three spots.

"He's a weapon, and we use him that way," Hinch said of Hurter, who has thrown 36 innings in 19 appearances this season. "This is a unique team that features a ton of left-handed hitters, he's a really tough guy on those left-handed hitters. ... It's a pretty good matchup. ... When we do it this way, we can determine when to bring Sawyer in."

The Tigers prioritize the entry point for the bulk reliever to provide the best opportunity for success. In this case, Gipson-Long served as the bulk reliever — but only after Hurter set him up by pitching into the third inning.
"It was a really good day on the mound," said Hinch after using five pitchers for a 5-3 win in Tuesday's game, "but it does start with Hurter getting in and handing the ball to Sawyer in a good place, and then Sawyer was really incredible."
Hurter faced 12 batters.
Seven of them were left-handed hitters.
Lefties have batted just .188 with a .483 OPS against Hurter throughout his MLB career, which spans 29 games across parts of two seasons. Meanwhile, righties have hit .213 with a .627 OPS.

"It's not a knock on Sawyer," Hinch said. "It's more pro-Hurter in the things he can do against this lineup, that's predominantly left-handed. That's the right matchup."
Henderson is the most dangerous talent in the Orioles' lineup, but he's a left-handed hitter. The Tigers wanted Hurter to face him twice in favorable matchups, limiting Gipson-Long to just two unfavorable matchups instead of three.
That's exactly what happened.
The Tigers mapped out the plan with Hurter as part of their pregame preparation.
"They give me an idea about the hitter they're looking at Sawyer coming in, so I have an idea," Hurter said. "They give me a little heads-up of what batter I need to get to."

In Tuesday's game, Hurter matched up with Henderson in the first and third innings. In the third, Henderson delivered a two-out RBI single, which forced the Tigers to pivot from the original plan.
Had Hurter retired Henderson, then Gipson-Long would've entered for a clean fourth inning against right-handed hitter Ramón Laureano. But once Henderson reached base, the Tigers called on right-handed reliever Chase Lee for their matchup to face Laureano, finishing the third.
"We wanted a clean inning for him, so Chase had to come in and get the one out," Hinch said. "But Hurter pitched efficiently, which allows me to extend him as long as we want."
Hurter has worked as a starter throughout his career in the minor leagues, so he has experience handling heavier workloads across multiple innings, but the Tigers just don't have room for him to start in the big leagues.

So Hurter takes on the do-it-all role.
"We can't forget, this guy could start on a lot of teams," Hinch said of Hurter, who has a 1.75 ERA with nine walks and 34 strikeouts across 36 innings, "and he may start down the road. It shows, because he pounds the strike zone."

After Hurter, Gipson-Long allowed one run on three hits and zero walks with five strikeouts across 4⅔ innings. His fastball maxed out at nearly 96 mph, his changeup generated six whiffs on 11 swings and he threw more than 78% of his pitches for strikes.

Gipson-Long dominated.
But the Tigers set him up for success.
"The fact that we can throw (Tarik) Skubal, Casey (Mize) and Jack (Flaherty) out there for seven, eight (innings)," said catcher Dillon Dingler, "and then the next day throw a couple of arms before we get to the bulk guy, it's a completely different look."
Another fun element in the game: The Tigers showed off their pitching versatility by turning to reliever Tommy Kahnle (who has eight saves) in the eighth inning, then reliever Will Vest (who has 11 saves) in the ninth inning.
Detroit Tigers pitcher Will Vest (19) celebrates after a game against the Baltimore Orioles at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
Next time, it could be Vest first and Kahnle second.
"We can go a lot of different ways, which makes us unpredictable," Hinch said. "We try to be unpredictable and be a tough matchup for teams. It's working for us."

NWSL's Pride finalize record deal with Mexico's Tigres for Lizbeth Ovalle

The Orlando Pride acquired Lizbeth Ovalle from Mexico's Tigres UANL on Thursday for an international record transfer fee. The Pride did not disclose terms of the agreement, but a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the Pride would pay a fee of $1.5 million. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the agreement with the National Women's Soccer League club had not yet been formally signed. The transfer fee surpasses the $1.3 million fee Arsenal paid Liverpool for Canadian striker Olivia Smith in the English Women's Super League last month. That broke the previous record fee of $1.1 million that Chelsea paid the San Diego Wave for defender Naomi Girma in January. Ovalle, who is known as Jacquie, was signed by the Pride through the 2027 season, with a mutual option for 2028. "I'm very happy to join Orlando Pride,' Ovalle said in a statement released by the Pride. 'I'm coming with the clear objective of winning titles and leaving a mark with the Club. I'm ready to give it my all and help Orlando Pride continue to be a leading team.' A 25-year-old winger, Ovalle has led the Tigres of Liga MX Femenil to six titles since joining the club in 2017. She is the team's all-time leading scorer with 136 goals. She's also made 58 appearances for the Mexican national team with 20 goals. Nicknamed La Maga (The Magician), Ovalle went viral on social media this year with a so-called 'scorpion kick' goal, only facing away from the net, in a Tigres match against Guadalajara. Ovalle is set to play in the Liga MX Femenil All-Star game against Barcelona on Friday before joining the Pride. 'This is a historic transfer not only for our institution, but also for Mexican and global soccer," Tigres said in a release announcing the deal. 'The transfer of a player widely recognized as the best in the Liga MX Femenil has been finalized." ___

Defense ready for season

Lost in all the drama was just how improved McNeese was last season compared to the year before. With six wins, the Cowboys had the second-largest turnaround in Division I football. Only Indiana improved more. Of course, that's because of a 1-11 2023 campaign that saw the program hit rock bottom. Also lost was just how improved the defense was for McNeese. It was that group that led the way to a better year despite some key injuries. 'We took a big step last season,' said defensive coordinator Tony Pecoraro. 'We were able to play more of an attack style and had more depth.' This year's version of McNeese seems even deeper thanks to a very good offseason in the transfer portal. That should help offset the loss of more than a few key players, including All-American linebacker Micah Davey and safety Boogsie Silvera. 'We lost some very good players, but we brought in some very good players, too,' said safety Javon Davis. 'I think we have a chance to be even a better group this year.' Davis had 43 tackles a year ago and is taking over as the leader of the defense. 'It's a different role that I'm looking forward to,' said Davis. 'I think this secondary has a lot of guys who can make plays.' With all the newcomers and moving parts, the big question early will be chemistry. That has not looked like an issue during camp, as the defense has been ahead of the offense heading into the second scrimmage and final scrimmage on Saturday. 'I have really liked what our defense has been doing,' said head coach Matt Viator. 'They really are fast to the football and have been physical.' The defensive line has been especially impressive. With 19 players in the room, depth, which has been a massive issue with the group the past few years, should not be one this fall. 'It's the deepest I've ever had in that room,' Pecoraro said of his linemen. 'I feel like we got 12 right now that I think we can win with. I remember when we were moving offensive linemen over during the season, we were so thin.' The defensive coordinator is also happy with the more physical play during this camp. 'We are actually taking people to the grass,' said Pecoraro. 'We are doing a lot of drills and teaching. We are seeing the guys use what they are learning and starting to really believe in it. 'It all starts in the trenches. I think the more physical work in the trenches will make us a more physical team.' Defensive ends A'Ron Thomas and Masey Lewis combined for 55 tackles and 4.5 sacks last year. 'I think we have the best defensive line in the league,' said Lewis. 'We have been through a lot the last few years, and we want to turn it around.' Some of the injuries last year could prove to be a blessing this season. It forced players who may not have had much time to play the game. Linebacker Peyton Lemaire, a Sulphur High product, is one of those guys. When Davey was injured last season, it was the 6-foot-3, 210-pounder who replaced him in the lineup. 'That helped me get the experience I needed,' said Lemaire. 'It gave me confidence that I would play at that level.' Lemaire believes this defense will be more about the group than just one or two guys. 'We have a lot of guys who can make plays,' Lemaire said. 'We are going to be more defense by committee, I think this year.' That is just what Cowboy fans want to hear.

NBA 2K ranks Rockets star Kevin Durant among league's top 10 players

Among all players, Rockets star Kevin Durant checks in at No. 10 on NBA 2K's newly released ratings list for its upcoming NBA 2K26 edition. Houston Rockets stars Amen Thompson and Alperen Sengun are both top-40 players, and even at 37 years old, Kevin Durant could still be a top-10 player. That's the view of developers with the popular NBA 2K video game franchise, who announced Thursday that Durant (rated 93 on a scale going up to 100) came in with the league's No. 10 overall rating. For the new NBA 2K26 edition, the only players with a higher rating than Durant are: Based in large part on that trio of high-end talent, the Rockets are widely considered among the true championship contenders entering the 2025-26 season. With the Phoenix Suns last season, Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game while shooting an extremely efficient 52.7% overall and 43.0% on 3-pointers. The future Hall of Famer earned All-Star honors for the 15th time in his distinguished career.
