IND vs ENG 5th Test: Bazball hits brick wall - India's final hour surge takes the series into deciding Day 5
TimesofIndia.com in London
: It was absolute theatre in the final session of Day 4. It had everything. Almost every delivery became an event. Both India seamers Mohammed Siraj and
Prasidh Krishna
ran in hard and there was an appeal for almost everything which they bowled.
The capacity crowd at The Oval became animated, got behind the visitors who were just about hanging on. Joe Root's wicket, Jacob Bethell's rash shot gave them plenty to believe in fading night and they bowled their heart out in what was a very challenging period to survive for hosts England.
Very few found the middle of the blade and India felt interested in every delivery which wrapped on the pads, found the edge or beat it.
There were loud shouts, oohs and aahs, and suddenly the straight-forward result, something that looked a mere formality before the session began. Only 57 to get, Root and Bethell in the middle and Jamie Smith and bowlers to follow. Lots of batting, not many runs after a dominating session meant England were well ahead but that one hour spiced things up before it suddenly became dark and there was a heavy enough downpour that warranted covering the entire square.

Before the late theatrics, two moments before the Tea break summed up India's most of the day. First ball of the 65th over, a not-so-100% Akash Deep put in some extra effort into his length delivery which Jacob Bethell lobbed up into the air. All Akash had to do was take a few steps back and complete what could have been a regulation catch. He turned to take a few steps but lost balance, possibly due to the shoe getting stuck, and the ball dropped right in front of him.
He was on the ground, Siraj tried to get there but couldn't and the sense of helplessness in the middle reflected in the body language of the Indian players.
England were in cruise control at 307/4 and a luckless India continued to toil without the rub of the green going their way. In the very next over, Siraj put in his extra effort on an in-dipper which crashed into Joe Root's pads but umpire Kumar Dharamasena was unmoved.
To the naked eye, impact seemed outside off but Shubman Gill rolled another desperate dice to see the back of England's rock. The DRS confirmed the impact, Root survived and the helplessness continued.

When the day got underway, the odds were heavily stacked in India's favour on what was the liveliest pitch of the series. The ball had been doing something right through the first three days and even though England had chased 371 in the series opener at Headingley, The Oval pitch was going to be the toughest examination for the English batters.
India came hard in the morning session, better prepared with smart fielding plans to keep Ben Duckett quiet, picked two early wickets and clearly looked like getting at least two more.
Siraj was steaming in, making things happen but the wickets column didn't quite reflect the kind of rhythm he was in the morning session. Batting had been better after the heavy roller in the morning but India had their plans chalked out.
They kept the 'Bazballers' under check but what hit them in the post-Lunch session was Brook's bravado coupled with Joe Root's brains. The 195-run stand between the two Yorkshiremen stunned the visitors and Brook, in particular, took the game away.
After Siraj misjudged his catch when Brook was batting on just 19, the right-hander exploded and never looked back. He continued to be severe, struck the ball sweetly and punished India's tired three-seamer attack.
The toll of playing all five Tests - the only bowler to do so across both camps - was showing on Siraj as he alongside Akash and Prasidh Krishna desperately sought a wicket. England, meanwhile, didn't give an inch and kept getting closer to the mammoth target without doing anything silly. Yes, the approach did come as a surprise for a side which is known for doing silly things, even when everything is in their control, but Day 4 was a bit different.
It wasn't just Bazball. But a much refined approach. Bazball with brains. Root hit a hundred, Brook scored a hundred, India bowlers kept trying but didn't get the results in their favour. But that one hour... that dramatic one hour has set-up another Day 5 finish for what has been a fiercely competitive series.
Poll
Was the dramatic one-hour session a turning point for India in the match?
Yes, it boosted their morale
No, it was too late
It created more pressure
It nearly turned out to be a story of what-could-have-been for the visitors but the drama has ensured they get one final crack on Day 5 morning to get a result in their favour and level the series.

Chennaiyin FC Suspends Operations Due To Uncertainty Surrounding ISL
Indian club football appeared to be in complete crisis as Chennaiyin FC on Wednesday suspended its operations in view of the uncertainty surrounding the Indian Super League, days after Bengaluru FC and Odisha FC decided to stop paying salaries to their first-team players and staff. Chennaiyin's decision came a day before a crucial meeting between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) top brass and eight ISL clubs on Thursday. Chennaiyin FC is, however, unlikely to have a representation in the meeting as the club is not among the signatories calling for such a move. "In the light of the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of the ISL, Chennaiyin FC has taken the extremely difficult decision to temporarily pause club operations," the Chennai-based club said on its social media handle. "These are never easy decisions to make, and ours has come after much thoughtful consideration and careful deliberation. The challenges of being a stakeholder in Indian football are well recognized. "This is not a step we take lightly. It affects people we care about deeply. The welfare of our players, coaches, staff and their families remains a priority, and we are in constant communication with them as we face this together." The two-time ISL champion side "hope that this pause will be short-lived and that we can return to doing what we love as soon as there is clarity for all clubs". "Throughout this uncertainty, our commitment to the growth of Indian football, upon which this journey began remains as strong as ever. To our loyal supporters, your passion and belief have always inspired us. We ask for your understanding as we navigate this challenging period, and we look forward to better days ahead," it added. "At Chennaiyin FC, we are more than just a football club. We are a family. Like any family, we support each other in difficult times. However we must remain true to the core values on which this club was built and which we have always strived to uphold." Last week, ISL side Odisha FC took the decision to suspend paying salaries to its first-team players and staff. Late on Monday, Bengaluru FC indefinitely suspended contracts of its first-team players and staff amid the continued uncertainty over the ISL, which remains on hold. The club, home to legendary striker and former India captain Sunil Chhetri, said the lack of clarity on the League's future left it with no choice but to take this "difficult" decision. "In view of the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Indian Super League season, Bengaluru Football Club has taken what is a very difficult decision of indefinitely suspending the salaries of the players and staff belonging to the first team,' the Bengaluru club had said in statement. "Running and sustaining a football club in India has always been an uphill climb, one we have put everything aside made, season after season. "However, the lack of clarity on the League's future leaves us with no choice but to take this step. The future and well-being of our players, staff and their families is of utmost importance to us, and we are in touch with them as we wait for a resolution," the statement added. Bengaluru FC also urged both the AIFF and FSDL to resolve the impasse at the earliest. "We urge the AIFF and FSDL to end this impasse swiftly. The uncertainty benefits no one, and a prompt resolution is vital for the future of Indian football," the club said. The ISL was put on hold by its organisers, Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), due to the unresolved status of the Master Rights Agreement (MRA) with the All India Football Federation (AIFF). The current 15-year MRA between FSDL and AIFF, signed in 2010, expires on December 18. Amid the growing uncertainty, eight ISL clubs have written to the AIFF expressing concern about their future. The AIFF's top brass is scheduled to meet the CEOs of the eight clubs on Thursday to discuss the situation. The letter, calling for a "constructive dialogue" with the AIFF, was signed by Bengaluru FC, Jamshedpur FC, FC Goa, Hyderabad FC, Kerala Blasters, NorthEast United FC, Odisha FC and Punjab FC. The three Kolkata-based clubs -- Mohun Bagan Super Giant, East Bengal, Mohammedan Sporting -- as well as Mumbai City FC and Chennaiyin FC were missing. Last month, AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey had assured that the 2025-26 ISL season would be held, but stopped short of confirming a start date. On July 11, FSDL officially announced that the 2025-26 ISL season had been put "on hold' due to uncertainty surrounding the MRA renewal. The ISL usually runs from September to April. Following a directive from the Supreme Court, the AIFF has been asked not to negotiate new terms of the MRA (with FSDL) until a final judgment is delivered in the AIFF draft constitution case. A ruling is expected soon.

Mike Vrabel just broke the internet with blood on his face after Patriots-Commanders brawl at camp
Mike Vrabel jumps into Patriots-Commanders brawl and walks out with blood on his face. (Image via X) If you thought NFL training camp was just about drills and walkthroughs, Mike Vrabel just reminded everyone that it's also a battlefield. During Tuesday's joint practice between the New England Patriots and the Washington Commanders, things got so heated that a full-blown brawl broke out and Vrabel, in peak 'football guy' fashion, didn't hesitate to throw himself right into the chaos. Mike Vrabel proves he's all-in, not just yelling toughness, but literally wearing it Here's what went down, rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson got into it with a Commanders defender after a heated rep during pass protection. Pushes turned into punches, and both sidelines swarmed in, a classic preseason pile-up. But the jaw-dropping part? Mike Vrabel, New England's new head coach, charged into the middle of the fight to break it up and came out of the mess bleeding. No joke. Cameras caught Vrabel with a gash on his right cheek, reportedly from accidental contact with rookie offensive lineman Will Campbell. The guy wasn't just coaching the Patriots, he was bleeding for them. What makes this story even more legendary? Vrabel didn't storm off or call it quits. He shrugged it off, stayed in the drill, and even cracked a classic Vrabel line to the guys around him, 'The guy couldn't get through and tried starting something. I wasn't gonna let that shit slide though' That's not just coach-speak, that's a man sending a message. If there were any doubts about whether Vrabel could lead the Patriots into a new era after Bill Belichick, this moment pretty much erased them. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Exclusive game bonus awaits POPG Learn More Undo Veterans and young guys alike were reportedly hyped by how Vrabel handled it. Tight end Hunter Henry said the team feeds off his energy. Wideout DeMario Douglas called it a "tone-setter." And honestly? It's hard to imagine Belichick ever bleeding for a summer practice fight. Insiders say this might be the most 'football guy' moment of 2025 training camp Once the images of Vrabel's bloody face hit the internet, NFL Twitter/X exploded. Analysts couldn't help but chime in either. Some called it the most 'hard-nosed moment' of any camp so far. For Patriots fans still mourning the end of the Belichick era, Mike Vrabel just gave them a brand-new blueprint for leadership: no monotone pressers, no hoodie mystique just full-contact culture setting, with a side of blood. HC declines interim relief to cricketer Dayal in rape case
1 2 Jaipur: The Rajasthan High Court Wednesday declined to grant interim relief to 27-year-old cricketer Yash Dayal, who is facing allegations of raping a minor. The court refused to stay his arrest or halt police proceedings in the case. Justice Sudesh Bansal, while hearing Dayal's plea, observed that since the survivor was a minor when the alleged incident first took place, no protection from arrest could be considered at this stage. The court has called for the case diary from city police and listed the matter for further hearing on Aug 22. Yash Dayal, a fast bowler from Uttar Pradesh and a member of Royal Challengers Bangalore, the current IPL champion team, was accused of sexually assaulting the girl when she was 17. According to the survivor's lawyer, the incident occurred about two years ago, when she was a minor. It was also alleged that Dayal called the girl to a hotel in Sitapura during IPL-2025 and raped her again. Sanganer Sadar police registered the case on July 23. As per the petition, the survivor introduced herself as a cricketer and came in contact with Dayal in connection with her sporting career. She alleged that Dayal promised her help with professional opportunities in exchange for sexual favours. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Limited Time iPhone Deals (Save Big) on the Latest Models!
