Community rallies in grief for Likhona Fose as officials confront rising violence

On Tuesday, City of Joburg Speaker, Nobuhle Mthembu and Executive Strategic Advisor to the MMC for Public Safety, David Tembe, visited the family of 14-year-old Likhona Fose, who was brutally murdered and violated in Durban Deep, Roodepoort.
Following the harrowing murder of 30-year-old Olorato Mongale, Joburg residents woke up on Sunday to news that Likhona's lifeless body was discovered by a passer-by in the veld in Durban Deep, on the West Rand, with her genitals removed.
Reports indicate that the family suspects hate crime to be the motive in the murder of the Grade 8 pupil, who identified as a lesbian.
Tembe, who was greeted to protesting community members and anti-GBV activists, extended his condolences to the bereaved family, stating: "Her tragic and brutal killing, suspected to be linked to occult practices, has shaken the community. The city stands with the family during this time of immense grief, reaffirming its commitment to fighting heinous crimes and protecting the most vulnerable."

Speaking to the grieving family, Mthembu decried the increase in the number of gender-based violence (GBV) cases in the country.
"What laws need to be changed in this country so that we can feel protected? Every day, we wake up to something. Who must we apologise to so that this can stop? We can celebrate the country's democracy, but this democracy is not working for us women because we are the ones who are being killed," she said.
MMC for Public Safety, Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, also extended his support to the family and the entire Durban Deep community, saying the city stands with them following Tembe's visit to the family.
"We reaffirm our commitment to fighting heinous crimes and protecting the most vulnerable members of our society. The Strategic Advisor to the MMC for Public Safety, David Tembe, visited the family to offer support and condolences. The city will collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and bring perpetrators to justice," Tshwaku said.

Former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede and her 21 co-accused are charged with multiple counts of fraud, racketeering, corruption, money laundering, contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act and the Municipal Systems Act, relating to the Durban Solid Waste (DSW) tender of more than R320 million. The State on Monday at Durban High Court proposed to the current witness, that those figures in the tender's bid specification were provided by Allan Robert Abbu. Abbu, at the time, was the Deputy Head for cleansing and solid waste. The media is prohibited from naming State witnesses. However, Abbu's counsel, advocate Jay Naidoo SC, disputed this, saying that the previous witness X, who had drafted the tender advertisement, said Abbu gave her a document that had the figure of the number of households that needed to be serviced. Advocate Jimmy Howse SC interjected and reminded the witness in her evidence in chief that she had told the court that she was under pressure while drafting the advertisement, as Abbu also wanted her to draft a report that was to go to the Bid Adjudication Committee (BAC). Naidoo said if the State could tell him where witness X said Abbu was dictating the numbers of households to be serviced while he stood behind her, it would be different. 'Her evidence was that Abbu was in and out of her office,' he said. He said the document that contained the household numbers that Abbu gave to witness X is not disputed by the defence. The State is currently leading evidence of witness Y, who said part of her job was to confirm project budgets and estimate them. Witness Y told the court that the number of households that were in the BAC report prepared by witness X was tripled, and some were doubled.

'Baby Nikita's' parents abandon bail application
'Baby Nikita's' parents appeared at the Protea Magistrates Court on Monday where they abandoned their bail application. Image: Itumeleng English/independent Newspapers The parents of 4-year-old 'Baby Nikita' told the Protea Magistrate's Court on Monday that they were abandoning their application for bail as they face charges of child abuse and murder. Baby Nikita was admitted to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital more than two weeks ago, after her screams of being beaten sent shockwaves across the Eldorado Park community, resulting in the arrest of her parents. The child later died from her injuries. According to police, the man was arrested after officers responded to reports of screams coming from a backyard shack. Inside the home, police discovered the young girl with severe head injuries, bruises and a swollen eye. The matter has been postponed to October 9 for further investigation. The child's uncle said his brother, one of the suspects, was not raised to take drugs or abuse children and the family is devastated. Due to the sensitivity of the matter, the family has asked to be given space to bury their little one before addressing the impact this has had on them. The brother of the accused, who cannot be named to protect the child, speaking outside court said the family is still shaken by what has happened. Video Player is loading. His sentiments were echoed by their father, who also spoke briefly, saying in spite of the tragedy, they want justice to prevail. "We, like everyone else, want justice to prevail as we believe what happened to our grandchild should not have happened," the grandfather said outside the court. The child's father is facing five charges, including rape, compelled rape, assault with GBH, murder, child abuse, and defeating the ends of justice, while the mother is facing charges related to murder and failing to report the abuse of a minor. Baby Nikita's funeral is expected to draw a large crowd at the Don Mateman Hall on Tuesday. On Monday, scores of Eldorado Park residents came out in their numbers once again as they awaited the court outcome following a memorial service held at Don Mateman Hall on Sunday.

Minister McKenzie's deadline looming to respond to SAHRC over offensive K-word tweets

Image: Armand Hough/Independent Newspapers Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has until Wednesday to respond to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) regarding offensive posts on his X (formerly known as Twitter) account, including the use of the K-word. The commission has launched an investigation into McKenzie over alleged xenophobic remarks and resurfaced posts, some dating as far back as 2011. The controversy intensified following a live video in which McKenzie used a racial slur while discussing actions taken by his party, the Patriotic Alliance (PA), against the hosts of the 'Open Chats Podcast.' The podcast hosts had previously made disparaging remarks about the Coloured community. McKenzie argued that had Coloured people made similar comments about other races, it would have made front-page news. In the wake of the video, several old tweets -dating between 2011 and 2017, resurfaced, reportedly containing apartheid-era racial slurs directed at black South Africans and references to the term "Black Diamond" in language widely condemned as racially charged. The SAHRC said it became aware of the posts on August 9, 2025, following multiple complaints from political parties and individuals. After an initial assessment, the commission found the minister's statements to be 'prima facie' violations of the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act (Equality Act), 2000. Next Stay Close ✕ The commission has sent McKenzie a formal letter of allegations and said it may institute proceedings in the relevant Equality Court under the SAHRC Act of 2013 and the Equality Act. While the right to freedom of expression is protected in South Africa, the SAHRC stressed that it is not absolute and reiterated that hate speech is prohibited under both the Equality Act and the Prevention and Combating of Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Act, 2023. The SAHRC further emphasised that McKenzie, as a Minister and Member of Parliament (MP), is expected to uphold ethical standards. It also called on all South Africans to honour the values of the Constitution, including human dignity, equality and non-discrimination. McKenzie, meanwhile, has denied being a racist, calling the backlash a "politically motivated campaign orchestrated by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and social media influencers". "This whole campaign to find something racist I ever said is hilarious because you have now gone 13 years back and can't bring out one racist thing I ever said," McKenzie stated. While rejecting any racist intent, he admitted to having posted 'insensitive, stupid and hurtful' remarks in the past, saying, 'I was a troll, stupid. I cringe when seeing them and I am truly sorry for that.'
