Sankar Vilas flyover in Guntur set for demolition on July 20
The old flyover will be razed down to construct a new one. The traffic on the flyover will be stopped from next Wednesday.
The R&B department, the nodal agency to construct the new flyover, has decided to start bulldozing of the existing flyover from July 20 and asked the line departments to take adequate measures to handle the vehicular movement through alternative routes. Taking the R&B department's decisions into consideration, district collector Nagalakshmi asked the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) and city traffic police to stop vehicular movement on Sankar vilas flyover route from July 16 itself.
In fact, a year has passed since the Centre sanctioned 98 crore to take up the new Road over Bridge (RoB) by replacing the 65-year-old flyover near Sankar vilas junction. The district administration took more than 10 months to complete the spade work before the launch of the construction. Surprisingly, the govt has not completely cleared the compensation to the building owners who will be losing their precious properties on the main road of brodipet.
GMC authorities have been asked to ensure that key alternative roads-three bridges junction and Pattabhipuram road under bridge (RUB) were not flooded during the monsoon season. The GMC has geared up with diesel motors and operators to handle the emergencies to pump out the water. Similarly, the potholes on all the exit and entry routes have been taken up on war footing basis to allow the free flow of traffic during the construction of the new flyover.
The traffic DSP Ramesh made a whirlwind visit of the city and initiated measures to remove the bottlenecks. The vehicle parking slot near APSRTC bus stand and auto parking area have been evacuated to prevent the traffic jam. Similarly, the traffic diversions were initiated near Donka Road, kuglar hospital road, Chuttugunta junction and GMC office. The vehicle parking area has been removed at Lalapet police station and street vendors were also removed from the vegetable market area.
Traffic police decided to deploy additional teams near key junctions to clear the traffic jams after diversion of the traffic.
"We will suggest the educational institutions in and around the city which operated buses via Pattabhipuram flyover to change the opening and closing times by 30 minutes to 45 minutes to reduce the traffic jam," said a senior police official. More than 200 schools and colleges operate buses through the city roads.

Property tax notices issued despite GMC repeal, councillors stage protest
Ghaziabad: Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation (GMC) councillors on Friday staged a sit-in protest at the corporation's head office in Navyug Market over hiked property tax notices to residents, even though the "board repealed the proposal". The hiked property tax came into effect on April 1. GMC officials, meanwhile, said the process of issuing notices is "system-generated". "If anyone has deposited a hiked property tax, it will be adjusted to older tax slabs," the GMC officials said. But the protesters are not convinced. Councillor Manoj Goyal said, "The GMC board, which met on June 30, unanimously called for bringing the existing property tax — which was applicable before April — and the board passed the proposal, which meant GMC would not collect hiked property tax and would not issue notices to residents. However, the corporation has been issuing notices, which is a violation of the municipal act." Councillor Neeraj Goyal said, "As a rule, we have the right to the minutes of the meeting and we are demanding whether the board's proposal has been complied with or not. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Compare Spreads: Bitcoin vs Ethereum CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo There is something missing due to which the officials are not sharing details. Every mayor has asked residents not to deposit property tax at hiked rates, but even then, notices are being issued, which undermines the very office of elected representatives. " Meanwhile, GMC officials said there is another issue involved — a case has been filed in Allahabad high court against GMC's decision to impose an increased property tax and the court's decision is pending. "We are awaiting the court's decision and only after that can the system-generated billing system be updated as per old tax slab rates," a GMC official said. The property tax rates before April 1 were between Rs 0.32/sq foot on properties with less than 12m of road width, Rs 0.48 to Rs 2 for roads 12–24 metres wide and Rs 0.65 to Rs 2.41 for wider roads. The revised rate is between Rs 0.75/sq foot to Rs 4/sq foot. In March, the board passed the proposal to link tax with the DM circle rate. GMC calculates tax based on the annual rental value (ARV) of a property.

In Ujjain, locals open homestays to cash in on rush of devotees during Shravan month
Ujjain: As the holy month of Shravan has started, locals in Ujjain, known for its rich history and spiritual significance, are seizing the opportunity to convert their homes into homestays. They are catering to surging influx of devotees flocking to the city for religious rituals and festivities. Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB) has registered over 60 homestays in Ujjain city, while those outside the ambit of the board are estimated in thousands, significantly reshaping the local economy. A couple, Ramesh and Kavita Sharma, has recently opened their doors to tourists seeking a place to stay during the auspicious Shravan month when the footfall of devotees goes up. Their two-bedroom home, nestled just a short walk from the famous Mahakaleshwar temple, was transformed from a family residence into a welcoming homestay. "We realised that many visitors do not just want a place to sleep but seek a homely atmosphere that connects them to the culture of Ujjain, especially those coming from other states like Maharashtra. Also, they get a feel of home and it is much more economical than any hotel," said Kavita, who assists her husband in running a small grocery shop in Ujjain. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Last year, the Sharma couple had earned an additional income of around Rs 35,000 during the festive month alone, a figure they expect to surpass this year. The average tourist footfall in Ujjain is to more than 2 lakh per day during the Shravan month, with weekends recording a significant spike in visitors. Like the Sharmas, many others have embraced the opportunity to share their space with travellers. Another homestay owner, Krishnalata Nathniya, turned into an entrepreneur at the age of 46 with her two-room homestay located within 1 km area of Mahakal temple. The Nathniya couple found joy in connecting with their guests, sharing local stories, and even offering homemade snacks that feature traditional recipes passed down through generations. "Our ground portion of the house was unused, so, we turned it into a homestay. We get lots of guests and positive feedback. It keeps me busy and has given a new identity," Krishnalata said proudly, emphasising that she now gives employment to people in her homestay. She said the demand for workforce increases sharply in Ujjain and the average salary of a worker increases to at least Rs 12,000 a month. A young entrepreneur, Devansh Gangrade, turned his property into a villa, capitalising on the opportunity. "This business model is very attractive and opens an additional source of income. In the digital age, online booking platforms have made business and reaching out to customers easier. The average income from homestays is not less than Rs 3-4 lakh per annum." With the MPTB backing these initiatives, many are encouraged to take that entrepreneurial leap. In preparation for Simhastha 2028, the board has commenced development work in villages of Kamed and Undasa near Ujjain. Each location will host between 6 and 12 homestays. "We have taken up projects across several places near tourist and religious place to make homestays. We are working to develop meaningful cultural exchanges between hosts and guests, while generating additional income sources for local communities," said Sheo Shekhar Shukla, principal secretary of tourism and culture.
