‘Won't play Shah Rukh Khan's mother in a film': Mumtaz has a rule about on-screen sons being at least 20 years younger than her

Indian Express01-05-2025
Veteran actor Mumtaz said that she has a rule about not playing mothers to actors who aren't at least 20 years younger than her. Although she has been retired from years, she said in a new interview that she won't even entertain the idea of playing a visibly older woman on screen. She cited Jane Fonda as somebody that she would like to emulate on screen, and said that she would be open to playing older women if they looked a certain way. She wouldn't, for instance, play a character with grey hair.
In an interview with journalist Vickey Lalwani, she was asked why she wouldn't play SRK's mother if Jaya Bachchan can, and she said, 'That's Jaya's decision, but I'll only play a mom to an actor who is 20 years younger.' Shah Rukh will turn 60 this year; Mumtaz is 77. She continued, 'And that, too, provided I look good on screen. I got married at a young age, and my children don't look much younger than me to this day. I could consider playing mothers if I look nice.'
Citing Jane Fonda in the film Mother-in-Law, she continued, 'I'll do a movie like that, where my son is played by a young hero. Her character was so stylish, wealthy, and she looked down upon the ordinary girl that her son falls in love with. She says, 'I don't want to accept a girl who is gareeb'. She was given the freedom to look how she wants and wear what she wants. I'll work in a film like that. If Shah Rukh wants me to look like I actually look, tell him I'll work. But he'll say no. Why should I have grey hair?'
Recalling when Shah Rukh said that she was his first crush, she said, 'Perhaps he said that in jest.' Addressing Shah Rukh directly, she asked, 'Will you work with me if I look like I actually look? Will you?' She added, 'He'll say no, just you see. He's a very intelligent boy, very smart, and a lovely person. He knows (what looks good on screen). Just because he likes me, that doesn't mean he'd do anything.'
Shah Rukh first spoke about having a crush on Mumtaz and Saira Bano over a decade ago. 'My first two crushes have been Mumtaz ji and Saira ji. Now I address them with a 'ji'. I always felt that they were the most beautiful ladies in the world. My father used to find Madhubala ji very beautiful,' Shah Rukh said at a press event in 2011.

Fans call Aryan Khan ‘Xerox copy of Shah Rukh Khan' after The Ba**ds of Bollywood teaser drops: ‘SRK relaunching himself'

The first look of Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan's much-awaited show The Ba**ds of Bollywood is finally here, and fans can't keep calm. While fans are excited for the series, which is written and directed by Aryan, they have also taken to social media to point out how eerily similar Aryan sounds to his father Shah Rukh. In the video, instead of staying behind the scenes, Aryan makes an appearance in front of the camera and introduces his show with the line, 'Picture toh saalon se baki hai, par show ab shuru hoga.' Aryan's cameo in the teaser shows him delivering Shah Rukh's famous dialogue from Mohabbatein, but of course, the star kid added his own twist. After the teaser was released, fans took to social media to point out how Aryan looks like a 'Xerox copy of SRK,' with his voice, mannerisms, looks, and even his acting and dialogue delivery resembling Shah Rukh's very closely. A fan wrote on Reddit, 'i genuinely thought it was Shahrukh doing the voiceover. CRAZYY HOW THEIR VOICES R SOOO SIMILAR.' Another comment was along similar lines, 'His voice also is similar to SRK , i thought SRK was doing dub for whole time.' Another user joked, 'SRK relaunching himself. That's it.' One more comment read, 'Dude how is he the Xerox Copy of SRK???? Never understood the hype until now but Aryan Khan is actually really hot 🔥' Another fan pointed out, 'The way he smiled is exactly how Shah Rukh smiles.' The Ba**ds of Bollywood features Lakshya, known for his lead role in Karan Johar's critically acclaimed film Kill, and Sahher Bambba in the lead roles. The show also boasts an ensemble cast including Mona Singh, Manoj Pahwa, Manish Chaudhari, Raghav Juyal, Anya Singh, and Gautami Kapoor. The preview of the show will be out on August 20. Earlier, Shah Rukh Khan had announced the title of Aryan Khan's web show through a video. The clip featured a lighthearted banter between Aryan and Shah Rukh, and that video too saw Aryan make a cameo. The official synopsis of The Ba**ds of Bollywood reads, 'An ambitious outsider and his friends navigate the larger-than-life yet uncertain world of Bollywood. The series blends self-aware humour with a high-stakes narrative — and promises a host of unforgettable cameos, blockbuster thrills and an adventurous ride into the world of Indian cinema.'

Shah Rukh Khan asked about on-set tantrums by fan, his answer is pure wit

Shah Rukh Khan surprised fans on Saturday evening by holding a special interactive #AskSRK session on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. During the chat, the Bollywood superstar answered questions ranging from his next film to his recent injury, and even spoke about his National Award win. When a fan asked, 'When is your next movie releasing? Is it King or any other movie?' the actor confirmed, 'Just KING….naam toh suna hoga?' Responding to another query about his project, Shah Rukh revealed that filming for King is already underway. He said, 'Did some good shoot….starting soon again. Only leg shots then move to upper body….Insha Allah will be done fast. @justSidAnand is working hard to finish.' The film is being directed by Siddharth Anand. A fan cheekily asked him about the most epic tantrum he had ever thrown on a film set, the superstar replied with characteristic humor:'Nobody allows me to throw tantrums on sets. Now on King even less, the director is so too strict and organised.' Shah Rukh recently won his first-ever National Award for Jawan. When a fan asked about the achievement, he responded, 'YAY!!!!! I feel like the King of the Nation!!! Too much honour and too much responsibility to try and excel and work harder!!' He had earlier expressed his gratitude on social media, writing, 'Thank you for honouring me with the National Award. Thanks to the jury, the I&B ministry… Iss samman ke liye Bharat Sarkar ka dhanyawaad. Overwhelmed with the love showered upon me. Half a hug to everyone today….' On the professional front, Shah Rukh was last seen in Rajkumar Hirani's Dunki, alongside Taapsee Pannu, Vicky Kaushal and Boman Irani. His next big project, King, is currently in the making and marks his on-screen collaboration with daughter Suhana Khan.

Shah Rukh Khan shares update on his injury, when he will resume shoot for King

It's been close to two years since Shah Rukh Khan was last seen on the big screen in Rajkumar Hirani's Dunki. The actor has since signed on for Siddharth Anand's King, and the shoot has been on for months. But now, an injury to Shah Rukh's arm has stopped that too. As fans eagerly await an update for the film, the actor himself addressed this on social media. Shah Rukh Khan wore a cast on his right arm in his video message after the National Award win. SRK shares health update On Saturday, Shah Rukh interacted with his fans on Twitter (now X) in an AMA (ask me anything) session. During the #AskSRK session, one of the fans asked him about his next projects. "When is your next movie coming?" read the question. Shah Rukh responded that he is doing King, and added that he plans to return to the shoot soon. 'Did some good shoot….starting soon again. Only leg shots, then move to the upper body….Insha Allah will be done fast. @justSidAnand is working hard to finish,' he wrote. The actor added he is currently taking physiotherapy sessions for his shoulder. Directed by Siddharth Anand, who has previously worked with the actor in Pathaan, King also stars Shah Rukh's daughter Suhana Khan. The makers had to pause the filming last month after the actor's injury. On National Award win and Aryan's show During the AMA session, Shah Rukh also spoke about his recent National Award win and his son, Aryan Khan's debut web series. Shah Rukh won the Best Actor award for his performance in the 2023 film Jawan. Aryan, on the other hand, is making his directorial debut with Ba***ds of Bollywood, a Netflix show. The first look of the show will be released today (August 17), and SRK expressed excitement about that. His company, Red Chillies Entertainment, is producing the show. King, on the other hand, does not have a release date or window as of now.
