Iconic Australian disco-era hotel gets long-awaited makeover

I'm staying in a corner premier river view suite, spanning a generous 60 square metres, with a comfy king bed, expansive views of the Swan River, lustrous blue marble table tops and sinuous furnishings that emulate the river's curves and serene hues. A boucle sofa and armchair, though undeniably chic, are better suited for a prim perch than marathon sprawl. The marble en suite features a huge walk-in shower (though sadly no bath tub), and Jo Loves amenities. Facilities include a flat-screen TV, bedside lighting controls and USB ports, free high-speed Wi-Fi, a pillow menu, minibar and an espresso machine. Suite guests can also access the Pacific Club Lounge, accessible via special executive elevators, with perks including a two-item laundry service, refreshments, and complimentary drinks and canapes from 5.30pm to 7.30pm.
Food + drink
Among the many drinking and dining options are wine bar Mas Vino, buffet Monty's and sports bar Hill Street. However, the hotel's culinary jewel is South American and Japanese-inspired UMA, helmed by executive chef Xerxes Bodhanwala; its four-course Journey Through Peru menu is generous, to put it mildly, featuring citrus-laced seafood, Peruvian-style meats and desserts, with optional matching wines.
Out + about
While not quite smack-bang in the middle of Perth's art-filled laneways and bustling dining precincts, its location offers a different kind of urban charm. Think sweeping water views and scenic riverside walking tracks. Heirisson Island, an oasis for spotting kangaroos, is a stone's throw away, while nearby Perth Mint's lavish Pink Diamond Room is well worth a peek, showcasing WA's famed South Sea pearls and Argyle diamonds. The buzzing Elizabeth Quay precinct, and Kings Park and Botanic Garden, are all in proximity. For exploring further afield, the free Perth City CAT Bus (transperth.wa.gov.au) stops conveniently close.
The verdict
Hunkering down in this revitalised oasis of calm seems a fair trade-off for being further away from the action of the CBD. The spirits of disco past may have faded, but a new, stylish era has arrived for Pan Pacific Perth.
The essentials
From $271 a night; $605 for a Premier River View Suite. 207 Adelaide Terrace, Perth. Phone: (08) 9224 7777. See panpacific.com

Loulou Bistro opens at Martin Place with a steak frites sandwich and happy-hour snails

During weekday happy hour (4-7pm) there will be $2 escargots and oysters, while the lunch and dinner carte lists Toulouse sausage with pomme puree, a mushroom and truffle vol-au-vent, seafood platters and French onion soup. Steak frites are having a bigger moment than usual in the CBD, with 24 York opening on July 23 and taking inspiration from Le Relais de l'Entrecote in France, which has successfully leant on the dish for more than half a century. Bouillon l'Entrecote at Circular Quay is another go-to venue for French-style steak and chips. 'Our focus won't be on steak,' says Parker of the opening menu at Loulou Martin Place. However, with steak frites one of the best sellers at the Milsons Point restaurant, it still features on the menu, along with a version encased in a baguette. 'We want to bring that feeling of a neighbourhood restaurant across to the city,' says Parker said. Plans are underway for the brand's further expansion, too. Later this year, a fast version of Loulou Bistro will open at the Qantas Domestic Terminal at Sydney Airport.

The coolest part of this Asian city is actually underneath it

It's day four of our 15-day Far Eastern Horizons cruise from Hong Kong to Tokyo aboard Viking Venus when we forgo the shore excursions to explore Zhongshan on our own. We stroll past whimsical urban art – rabbits racing snails, ducks marching in a line – all playfully tucked amid the layered plantings of trees and shrubs. Weekend markets line the path ahead, the aroma of coffee and fried pancakes drawing us along like the beckoning fingers of a cartoon wisp. The park's transformation started in 2017, but the neighbourhood's roots go back to the late 1800s when Taipei was under Qing dynasty rule. Then came the era of Japanese rule (1895-1945), a legacy still seen in the tidy street grid and abundance of ramen shops. We detour to Chifeng Street, known as 'Iron Street', where former scrap metal shops have been transformed into a creative hub of unique and design-driven stores. A time-worn belt from EWF Vintage, a pot of tea at Illumination Books and a playful snap inside the TiMELAB photo booth are the joys of exploring a neighbourhood. While many of the stores have had a modern makeover, it's the weathered bones of the century-old shop buildings that anchor the present to the past. Strolling deeper, the clang of metal from the remaining auto repair shops adds a raw, industrial rhythm to the street vibe. We see more of Zhongshan's creative soul inside the former US embassy, a Colonial-style mansion now home to the SPOT Taipei Film House. Though there's no time for an arthouse flick, we relax in the cafe like seasoned film buffs. From here it's a short walk to the Museum of Contemporary Art, where an impressive collection of works is housed inside a former 1920s elementary school. We finish on a lane at the edge of Linear Park, where a queue leads us to Mian Xian Ding, a Japanese-style shop stand serving traditional mian xian. For a handful of crumpled notes we receive a barstool at the crowded counter and a bowl each of gluey noodle soup. How much it cost or what was in it (oysters? intestines?) I'll never know, but every mouthful brings me closer to the heart of the neighbourhood, and the people who call it home. THE DETAILS Viking's 15-day Far Eastern Horizons cruise from Hong Kong to Tokyo (or the reverse) costs from $10,795 a person, based on double occupancy, flights not included. All meals, beer, wine and soft drinks with onboard lunch and dinner, one shore excursion in every port of call, Wi-Fi, gratuities and speciality dining are all included.
