Andhra Pradesh sets Oct 2 target to clear legacy waste

VIJAYAWADA: The State government has set an ambitious target to remove nearly 80 lakh tonnes of legacy waste by October 2, Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development P Narayana announced on Monday.
Acting on Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's directions, the government is adopting best practices from across the country to tackle the challenge, he said.
He said cleanliness programmes would be organised under four distinct themes with a strong emphasis on public awareness. 'Our mission is not just about removing waste but about changing people's attitudes towards littering. Awareness campaigns will be mapped out in detail,' he said. He underlined the importance of holding Swachh Andhra programmes every third Saturday under the CM's leadership. Swachh Andhra Corporation Chairman Kommareddy Pattabhi called for widespread public involvement, stressing that 'everyone should become a partner in this mission.' Citing his recent visit to eight European countries, Pattabhi said a culture of discipline must be nurtured from childhood.
He recommended including sanitation lessons in school textbooks to instil good habits early. Principal Secretary Suresh Kumar also spoke on the ocassion.
The workshop concluded with the Minister unveiling an Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) poster.

Chandrababu Naidu slams YSRCP-backed channel, asserts zero tolerance for 'vile remarks' on women

VIJAYAWADA: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Sunday strongly condemned the disgraceful remarks made by a journalist on a vernacular TV news channel owned by former Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, targeting women in the Capital Region of Amaravati. 'Ours is a culture that honours daughters. We belong to a society that reveres the feminine divine. This is our tradition - the essence of Indian life. Particularly among Telugu people, daughters and mothers are held in deep affection, and high esteem. In such a State of ours, making disgraceful and vulgar remarks about our mothers and sisters under the guise of political vendetta or media analysis is an unforgivable offence,' he observed. Naidu expressed dismay that the people of Andhra Pradesh, despite delivering a strong verdict against such toxic culture in the recent elections, continue to witness the same behaviour from the YSRCP. 'The appalling comments that demean the women of the capital region by likening them to prostitutes - an outright insult to their dignity. I strongly condemn this perverse trend being perpetuated under the cover of politics and media,' he said. 'It is even more distressing that a former Chief Minister, under whose own media channel these offensive remarks were telecast, is yet to denounce the act or apologise to women - a silence that is deeply troubling,' he said. 'Those who crossed all boundaries, and hurt the sentiments of women as part of a malicious conspiracy against the capital, will face the strictest possible consequences,' the Chief Minister warned. The derogatory and deliberate insults aimed at the women of the capital region - who protested against the previous destructive regime - are not just attacks on individuals, but an affront to womanhood itself,' he said. 'The NDA government, which respects women, and stands as a guardian of their self-respect, takes full responsibility to put an end to this vile culture,' he asserted.

Jaishankar to step up diplomatic push on visit to France, Belgium

On his third visit to Europe in the past few months, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar left on Sunday (June 8, 2025) for a week-long visit to France and Belgium. He is expected to meet with his counterparts in both governments, and in the European Commission and European Parliament in Brussels. This visit is part of the government's efforts to step up its diplomatic engagement post Operation Sindoor to garner support for India's fight against terrorism. 'The visit of EAM is expected to further deepen India's friendly relations with the European Union, France and Belgium and give renewed momentum to ongoing cooperation in diverse areas,' the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said, announcing the visit from June 8 to 14. In March, Mr. Jaishankar had travelled to the U.K. and Ireland, and in May, he had visited the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany. In France, Mr. Jaishankar is scheduled to visit Paris for bilateral talks with French Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barrot, and to Marseille to address the 'Mediterranean Raisina Dialogue', a conference of the Ministry and Observer Research Foundation (ORF). This is significant because Marseille is one of the European ports along with Trieste, Italy, and Piraeus, Greece that are in the running for the India-Middle East-Europe-Economic Corridor (IMEC) route, and although ambitions for the project launched in 2023 have been dimmed due to the Israel-Gaza conflict, New Delhi is keen to keep discussions on it alive. In Brussels, he will hold a 'Strategic Dialogue' with EU High Representative and Vice-President Kaja Kallas, the Ministry said. Mr. Jaishankar is also expected to raise India's request for the repatriation of diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, who is under arrest pending a trial for extradition to India to face charges of fraud and embezzlement. Mr. Jaishankar will end his tour in time for the G-7 summit in Canada, although it is unclear whether he will attend. He is also scheduled to travel to Washington for the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting in early July and could accompany PM Modi to the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 5-6. Rima Hassan: French-Palestinian MP On Gaza-Bound Ship Intercepted By Israel

European Parliamentarian Rima Hassan and climate activist Greta Thunberg were among the 12-member crew aboard the Gaza-bound humanitarian ship "kidnapped" by Israeli commandos in international waters early Monday. The vessel Madleen, a British-flagged yacht operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), was reportedly stopped around 2 am. Ms Hassan shared a photo from the yacht showing people in life jackets, seated with their hands raised as Israeli forces boarded the ship. Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg Thunberg said in a video recorded before the raid that she and others had been " kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupational forces." The Freedom Flotilla was carrying humanitarian aid for Gaza, aiming to challenge Israel's over 12-week-long naval blockade on the strip. Who Is Rima Hassan? Rima Hassan is a European Parliamentarian, elected on the France Insoumise (LFI) ticket in the 2024 June elections. She is the first French-Palestinian MEP in history. She is a 32-year-old legal scholar and human rights activist. She serves as a member of the European Parliament 's Committee on Foreign Affairs, the Subcommittee on Human Rights, and the Delegation for Relations with Palestine. Born in a Palestinian refugee camp in Syria in 1992, Ms Hassan grew up without official nationality until she became a French citizen in 2010 at age 18. She quickly rose to prominence as a vocal defender of Palestinian rights. She has accused Israel of committing "genocide" in Gaza, referring to it as a "fascist colonial entity" and a "nameless monstrosity" that "lies every day." Often seen wearing a keffiyeh (Palestinian scarf), Ms Hassan gained support from pro-Palestinian groups. Since her election, she has been a leading voice in calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and has become one of the most controversial figures in French politics. On February 27, French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau announced she would be investigated for " terrorist apologism" due to her statements on Israel. Some members of France's centrist and far-right camps even called for stripping her of French citizenship, though these efforts were later walked back as legally baseless. Rima Hassan is often labelled "Lady Gaza", a nickname given by a comedian on public radio, who portrayed her as obsessively focused on Palestine.
