Classified files and MI5 spy artefacts to be exhibited for the first time
A briefcase abandoned by infamous Cambridge spy Guy Burgess as he fled to Moscow in 1951 is among the never-before-seen MI5 artefacts going on display at The National Archives in Kew, south-west London.
The exhibition "MI5: Official Secrets" marks an unprecedented collaboration between the intelligence agency and The National Archives, offering the public a first-ever glimpse into MI5's classified files and private collection.
MI5 Director General Sir Ken McCallum said the exhibition reflects the Security Service's "ongoing commitment to being open wherever we can."
Among the key items on display is Burgess's leather briefcase, embossed with his initials and left behind at London's Reform Club as he made his escape to Moscow in May 1951.
Burgess's British passport is also being exhibited for the first time.
Burgess was a British diplomat and Soviet double agent during the Second World War and the early Cold War period.
He was a member of the Cambridge Five spy ring and fled to Moscow with fellow spy Donald Maclean in 1951 due to fears of being discovered.
None of the Cambridge Five were ever prosecuted for spying.
Another key exhibit is a 110-year-old lemon used as evidence against German spy Karl Muller.
Muller used lemon juice as invisible ink to inform on British troop movements. A warm iron was passed over a letter to reveal the secret messages.
When he was arrested, the lemon was found in his overcoat. He was executed by firing squad at the Tower of London in 1915.
Speaking at a preview of the exhibition, the MI5 Director General said: 'Having worked for MI5 for nearly 30 years I can tell you that the reality of our work is often different from fiction. Whether that fiction is George Smiley or Jackson Lamb.
'MI5 life is about ordinary human beings together doing extraordinary things to keep our country safe. Some of their stories and their perspective comes through in this exhibition.
'And while much of our work must remain secret, what you will see today reflects our ongoing commitment to being open wherever we can. And not just about our glorious moments.'
'Public trust and confidence can be even more powerfully understood when we are able to be open about things that didn't go well', Sir Ken added.
The display also includes a note confirming that Queen Elizabeth II's private secretary had spoken to the Queen about Anthony Blunt, the Monarch's art advisor, being a Soviet agent.
The note mentions how the Queen reacted 'very calmly and without surprise'.
In total, 20 items were loaned, including MI5's first camera and a key to the Communist Party of Great Britain's Westminster branch office.
It includes items dating from the foundation of MI5 in 1909 to modern-day artefacts such as a Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA) mortar bomb and reconstruction of a bomb made from an instant camera and bottle.
Mark Dunton, historian and curator of MI5: Official Secret, said: 'We were aware how interested the public are in the whole world of espionage.
'We suggested (the exhibition) first but MI5 thought about it and they thought 'wow yes this would be a good thing'.
'In terms of openness, it's all about being open about what they can, which I think is a really, really good thing.'

The report also revealed that high-ranking Air Force officials hazed new commanders by briefing them on a fabricated top-secret project called 'Yankee Blue,' which involved the supposed study of extraterrestrial craft. After the phony briefing, recruits were warned they would face jail or execution if they ever disclosed the information. However, retired Air Force members who reported bizarre sightings in the skies have called the Pentagon's claims 'a gigantic cover up.' Details confirming that Area 51 served as a testing ground for America's cutting-edge weapons were first revealed in a CIA document declassified in 2013. The report explained that during the Cold War, the remote Nevada base was used to test aircraft like the U-2 spy plane and the A-12 reconnaissance jet under a veil of secrecy. We are talking about hundreds and hundreds of people. These men signed NDAs. They thought it was real.' Defense Department spokeswoman Sue Gough confirmed to the Wall Street Journal that AARO had uncovered fabricated materials falsely presented as part of classified programs involving extraterrestrials. She said lawmakers and intelligence officials had been briefed on the findings. The disinformation campaign, however, does not seem to stop at Area 51 as servicemen at other US bases report similar stories. Teenager jailed in Dubai for family holiday romance appeals to Sheikh for pardon
A British teenager has asked Dubai's ruler for a pardon after he was jailedover a holiday romance. Marcus Fakana, from Tottenham, north London has formally submitted a plea for clemency to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The now 19-year-old was sentenced to one year in prison in UAE last year following a short romantic relationship in which he had sex with a 17-year-old British girl. Both his family and the girl's family were on holiday in the middle eastern country at the time. The relationship between them was consensual but it's illegal to have sex with anyone under 18 in Dubai. Marcus, who has spent several months in Al Awir Prison, hopes the Sheikh will offer a humanitarian pardon, so he can return home before his sentence is due to end, reports NeedToKnow. 'This has been the most traumatic and life-altering experience imaginable for Marcus,' said Radha Stirling, founder of Detained in Dubai, which is supporting the teen's family. 'He is barely an adult himself and never intended to break any law. 'What happened was legal in the UK and consensual. 'But now he is facing permanent damage to his mental health and future prospects because of it.' Conditions at the prison are said to be taking a toll on Marcus, who is thought to have limited contact with his family. The mother of the girl he had a relationship with reported him to Dubai police after she and her family had returned to the UK and she saw pictures of the pair and chats between them. The then 18-year-old and his family were still in Dubai at the time and police arrested him at their hotel. His parents have made repeated appeals to David Lammy MP, and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. They have also asked the British Embassy in Dubai to help secure his release. Ms Stirling said: 'If Marcus could go back in time, he would. 'He has shown remorse and fully respects the laws of the UAE. 'He only hopes the government will show compassion and allow him to return home to rebuild his life. 'He's very young and this is a heartbreaking way to begin adulthood.' The family is urging the British public and authorities to back their plea for clemency. Ms Stirling warned other parents to be aware of the risks young Britons face in countries with very different legal systems. She said: 'Parents need to be aware that teens can be charged in the UAE for behaviour that would not be considered criminal at home. He also runs a UK-registered charity called Education Aid for Palestinians, which has raised more than £3 million since 2017. Just a week ago, Mr Birawi was present at the launch of Madleen and live-streamed the event from a dock in Sicily. He called himself the 'founding member' of the Freedom Flotilla International Coalition - which arranged Madleen's voyage to Gaza. The 'selfie yacht' has now been seized by Israel, and all the people onboard have been detained. Labour MP Christian Wakeford named Mr Birawi in the Commons using special parliamentary protections that protect him from being sued. Mr Birawi said Mr Wakeford's claim was 'baseless' and that he was looking at 'all available legal recourse' in response to the MP's comments. According to Israel's strategic affairs ministry, Mr Birawi moved to the UK in the 1990s, has 'close ties to Hamas' and worked for several pro-Palestinian NGOs - including one tied to Hamas. In 2023, The Sun on Sunday revealed Mr Birawi lived in a £500,000 semi-detached house in leafy north London. MP for Bury South Mr Wakeford raised concerns over a 'serious national security risk' from 'Hamas operatives'. 'Regrettably, this mention appears to have been motivated by an intent to besmirch my character and, potentially, to rationalise any harm that may befall me or my family.
