The first 90 days: Bringing order to startup chaos

Over more than a decade of working at early-stage startups and high-growth tech companies, I've seen how the same forces that drive early success can eventually get in the way of scaling. In the early days of a startup, speed is everything. Teams are small and nimble, decision-making is fluid, and early breakthroughs come from people who can move quickly and solve problems on the fly. At this stage, I've seen really small teams accomplish the impossible. When I first joined Uber in LatAm, I was part of a team of four that managed end-to-end operations in Peru, bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars in annualized bookings.
In a startup's early days, the focus is often singular: growth and speed. Everyone focuses on capturing new users, building product-market fit, and scaling operations. But as companies mature, what worked during the zero-to-one phase starts to break down. Informal, ad hoc processes become bottlenecks. Growing headcount makes alignment harder. Eventually, leaders face a critical challenge: how do you introduce enough structure to support scale without sacrificing the speed and scrappiness that got you there?
Through multiple scaling transitions, I've learned that building structured operating models isn't about creating process for process's sake. As priorities shift from pure growth to a more balanced focus on growth, profitability and customer experience, teams need a shared framework that helps everyone understand where the company is headed and how their work contributes to that goal.
The first and most critical step is aligning on the company's overarching objectives. This may sound obvious, but it's surprisingly common for early-stage companies to operate without clearly defined priorities. Growth typically dominates at first, but as companies scale, priorities become more complex and start competing.
If these shifting priorities aren't clearly communicated, teams may continue operating under old assumptions. Some may still optimize for growth at all costs, while others focus on cost-cutting or operational improvements. I saw this firsthand at Kyte. When we transitioned from a growth mindset to a profitability one, some early employees struggled to grasp the importance of building structure and efficiency after years of focusing on top-line growth.
That's why, especially in the first 90 days as a new leader, it's essential to drive conversations to clarify the company's current focus. What are we optimizing for right now? How do we balance revenue growth, profitability, and customer satisfaction? What trade-offs are we willing to make? What investments are worth making today for long-term payoff?
Once defined, these objectives become a north star that allows teams to prioritize accordingly. They also serve as anchor points for decision-making when trade-offs arise. Just as important, these objectives must be cascaded throughout the company. Every person should understand how their work contributes to achieving these goals.
BUILD GOVERNANCE TO REDUCE COORDINATION OVERHEAD
Once objectives are established, the next challenge is managing company-wide orchestration as headcount grows. Early on, coordination happens organically: people sit together, hop on quick calls, or resolve issues through Slack. But as teams grow past 30, 50, or 100 people, informal coordination becomes unsustainable. Interdependencies and cross-functional conversations multiply, and teams spend more time just trying to stay aligned.
This is where governance comes in. Not as bureaucracy, but as a system that keeps people focused on the right conversations at the right time. Good governance creates structured spaces where teams can surface issues, unblock each other, track progress, and stay aligned. Without it, unstructured meetings proliferate, decisions stall, and execution suffers.
In my experience, effective governance tends to include the following meetings:
Weekly Business Reviews (WBRs): Weekly meeting to assess performance against key metrics, keeping everyone focused on top priorities.
Monthly OKR Reviews: A meeting to track quarterly objectives, recalibrate priorities, and adjust resources as needed.
Functional Syncs: Department-level or cross-functional meetings for tactical coordination on critical initiatives.
Leadership Check-Ins: Regular executive meetings to stay aligned on key decisions and trade-offs.
The goal is to replace reactive coordination with proactive alignment. Done well, governance creates fewer but more effective meetings that help teams move faster, not slower.
RUTHLESSLY PRIORITIZE STRATEGIC INITIATIVES
Even with clear objectives and governance in place, one of the biggest risks in high-growth companies is trying to do too much. In early-stage companies with limited resources, it's easy to launch many initiatives at once. Individually, each may seem worthwhile, but collectively they dilute focus and slow execution.
Once core objectives are defined, leaders should ruthlessly prioritize the top initiatives that will drive the biggest impact. This often means deliberately delaying or deprioritizing worthwhile projects that don't directly support the company's most important goals. That may sound simple, but in practice it requires constant discipline. In the words of Jony Ive, Apple's former Chief Design Officer, 'What focus means is saying 'no' to something that you, with every bone in your body, think is a phenomenal idea […] but you say no to it because you're focusing on something else.'
I've seen these tough choices play out firsthand. At Uber, it meant eventually slowing expansion, leaving markets, and deprioritizing bold bets to focus on profitability. At Kyte, it meant shelving certain product features and narrowing our customer focus to maximize ROI. These were difficult decisions, but freeing up capacity to focus on what mattered most allowed us to stay nimble and set up the business for long-term success.
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
High-growth startups are often built on speed and scrappiness, but sustainable growth requires structure. As companies mature, the absence of clear objectives, governance, and prioritization can quickly turn fast-moving companies into unfocused and inefficient ones.
In my experience, new leaders who take the time in their first 90 days to (i) align on company objectives, (ii) build governance to reduce coordination friction, and (iii) ruthlessly prioritize initiatives are better positioned to help their teams scale efficiently without sacrificing agility.
The result isn't bureaucracy, it's clarity and alignment. And that's what allows teams to execute efficiently, even as the business becomes more complex.

Let's take a look at what exactly a reverse stock split does, what it doesn't do, and what it means for Lucid investors going forward. Is this a desperate move? Fair or foul? EV maker Lucid announced Thursday that it filed a preliminary proxy statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding a special stockholders' meeting to authorize the board of directors to complete a reverse stock split of the company's Class A common stock at a ratio of 1-for-10 (1:10). Let's break this development down into what it means, and what Lucid hopes to achieve with its potential reverse stock split. A 1-for-10 reverse stock split simply means Lucid will reduce its outstanding shares by a factor of 10, essentially combining 10 old shares into one new share. The stock price will then be multiplied by 10. In the simplest example, a company with 100 shares with a $1 stock price will reverse split into 10 shares, valued at $10 per share. It's important to note what this doesn't do, which is change the value of what investors own. While the stock price changes, proportionally to the reduction in the number of shares, the company's market capitalization will remain the same, as will the investors' voting power and position value. Now to the question on investors' minds: Is this a sign of desperation? Not necessarily, because there are a few reasons that can drive a reverse stock split. It's true that typically a reverse stock split is done by a company in danger of being delisted from major exchanges such as the NYSE or Nasdaq -- both require companies to maintain a minimum share price of $1.00. If a company's stock price falls below that threshold for 30 consecutive trading days, it receives a deficiency notice and is given a set period to raise its price -- perfect for a reverse stock split. But as we know, Lucid is currently trading at roughly $3.15 per share, and its 52-week low was $1.93 per share. While that's a little close for comfort, especially given the gloomy electric vehicle market currently mitigating tariff impacts, it's not in immediate danger of being delisted. There is also potential upside for Lucid's potential reverse stock split, as many companies try to push the price of their stock higher to entice big institutional investors. Many institutional investors and mutual funds have policies against owning positions in a stock with a price below a minimum value -- raising the price could enable more large investors to jump into the company's stock, pushing it higher. This is not what typically happens, but Lucid's goal is to make its stock more attractive to more investors. What it all means At the end of the day, the market generally views a reverse stock split negatively. It's often a company in financial distress with a falling stock price and potential to be delisted -- not qualities of a great investment. Lucid is still burning through tons of cash, it's still slowly accelerating deliveries -- although consistently, as it's turned in seven straight quarters of higher deliveries -- and much of its future hinges on the success of its new electric Gravity SUV and its upcoming midsize platform that will underpin at least three more electric SUVs. Currently, Lucid has the liquidity to fund operations flawlessly through the second half of 2026, and while the market doesn't tend to favor reverse stock splits, this shouldn't raise many red flags for Lucid investors that they weren't already aware of. How to Make a 3.0% One-Month Yield By Shorting UBER Puts

Last month, I demonstrated in a June 20 Barchart article that investors could short out-of-the-money (OTM) UBER Technologies (UBER) puts and achieve a 2.0% one-month yield. That was proved successful as the short put options expired worthless on Friday. Today, it's possible to make a similar one-month 3.0% yield shorting OTM puts. UBER closed at $90.59 on Friday, and I had recommended shorting the $80.00 strike price puts expiring July 18 ("How to Make a 2.0% Yield with UBER Over the Next Month"). I showed that UBER was worth at least $95.59. This article will update that price target. The short put play strike was 4.7% below the trading price at the time. The premium received was $1.66; hence, the 2.0% yield (i.e., $ 1.66/$80.00 = 0.02075). Today, it's possible to make almost a 3% yield at a strike price with a similar distance below the trading price. More on that below. First, let's look at why UBER looks cheap here. UBER Stock Price Targets FCF-Based Target. My previous price target was based on UBER Technologies' free cash flow (FCF) margins. For example, in Q1, it made $2.25 billion FCF on $11.533 billion in revenue, or a 19.5% FCF margin. That was higher than the Q4 FCF margin of 14.27%, 18.85% in Q3 2024, and 16.08% in Q2. Stock Analysis shows that over the trailing 12 months (TTM), it generated $7.786 billion FCF on $45.38 billion in revenue, or an FCF margin was 17.16%. That was higher than the prior quarter's TTM FCF margin of 15.68%. So, on balance, it seems reasonable to assume that going forward, UBER could make at least an 18.5% FCF margin. Using analysts' next 12-month (NTM) revenue forecasts, UBER could make at least $10 billion in FCF: 0.185 x $54.36 billion NTM revenue = $10.06 billion NTM FCF Using a 4.5% FCF yield metric (i.e., 22.2x FCF) (its TTM FCF yield is 4.1%), here is how that values UBER stock: $10.06b / 0.045 = $223.6 billion market value That is +18% over Friday's market cap of $189.439 billion. In other words, UBER stock is worth +18.0% more at about $107 per share: 1.18 x $90.59 = $106.90 per share P/E Based Target. Historically, UBER stock has traded at 35.4x forward earnings, according to Morningstar's last 3 years' data (i.e., 55.5x 2023, 18.5x 2024, 32.3x current). In addition, analysts now project 2025 earnings per share (EPS) of $2.86 this year and $3.29 in 2026, or $3.08 over the next 12 months (NTM). Therefore, we can estimate its value: $3.08 NTM EPS x 35.4 avg forward multiple = $109.03 price target That is +20.3% over today's price. Analysts' Price Targets. Yahoo! Finance's analyst survey shows an average price target of $96.68 from 54 analysts, and Barchart's survey has a mean price of $100.35. Moreover, Stock Analysis says 34 analysts have an average $99.42 price target, and says 37 analysts have an average of $105.86. As a result, the average analyst price target from surveys is $100.58 per share, which is +11.0% over Friday's close. Summary Price Targets. The bottom line is that using 3 different methods, UBER stock looks around 16.5% undervalued: FCF-Based Target ……….. $106.90 P/E-Based Target ………… $109.03 Analyst-Based Target ….. $100.58 Average Price Target …… $105.50 per share +16.5% upside As mentioned earlier, one way to play this, to set a lower buy-in price and get paid for this, is to sell short out-of-the-money (OTM) put options. Shorting OTM Puts The August 22 expiry period, just over one month from now, shows that the $86.00 strike price put option, which is 5% below Friday's $90.59 close, has a midpoint premium of $2.53 per put contract. That means a short-seller of these puts (i.e., enter an order to 'Sell to Open' 1 put contract) can make an immediate yield of 2.94% (i.e., $2.53/$86.00 = 0.0294). Moreover, for investors willing to take on more risk, the $87.00 strike price put has a midpoint premium of $3.00, or a 3.45% yield (i.e., $3.00/$87.00 = 0.0345). So, in effect, the investor could use a mix of these two put options to make at least a 3.0% yield over the next month. Moreover, the $86.00 strike price put has a low breakeven point: $86 - $2.53, or $83.47, or -7.9% below Friday's closing price of $90.59. That means that even if UBER stock fell to $86.00 over the next month, the investor's actual investment cost would be just $83.47. Note that there is less than a one-third chance of this happening, as the delta ratio is -31%. That chance is based on historical trading volatility patterns in UBER stock. This also provides a good upside to investors, should it eventually reach the average $105.50 price target: $105.50 / $83.47 breakeven = 1.26 -1 = +26% upside Even if the stock does not fall to $86.00, the investor has a good expected return (ER). If this 2.94% yield can be repeated every 34 days for four and a half months (i.e., 34 x 3 times = 136 days, or 4.5x months): 2.94% x 3 = 8.82% expected return (ER) over 4.5 months The bottom line here is that UBER stock looks deeply undervalued. One way to profitably play this is to sell short out-of-the-money (OTM) puts in nearby expiry periods. On the date of publication, Mark R. Yet, that high yield betrays a deeper story: KHC shares have dropped more than 17% over the past year, sharply underperforming the S&P 500 Index ($SPX). Is this bold breakup plan the catalyst Kraft Heinz needs to rewrite its growth story and reward loyal shareholders, or just another twist in the tale of a stock stuck in neutral? Let's dive into KHC. KHC's Financial Position Kraft Heinz (KHC), the global food and beverage giant behind household staples like Kraft macaroni and cheese, Heinz ketchup, Capri Sun, and Lunchables, holds a market capitalization of $33.3 billion. The company remains a magnet for income-seeking investors, offering an annual dividend of $1.60 per share, a yield of 5.8%. Kraft Heinz trades at a forward price-earnings ratio of 10.7x, well below the packaged foods sector median of 16.12x, with a price-sales ratio of 1.27x, just a tick above the industry's 1.2x median, marking KHC as attractively valued in comparison to peers. Earnings haven't helped the case, though, as on April 30, Kraft Heinz delivered a first-quarter report that highlighted its ongoing operational challenges. Net sales slipped 6.4%, reflecting persistent headwinds, while the gross profit margin contracted by 60 basis points to 34.4%. Diluted earnings per share landed at $0.59, a year-over-year drop of 10.6%, and adjusted EPS came in at $0.62, down 10.1%. Despite sluggish top-line results, the company's free cash flow remained stable at $500 million. So far in 2025, Kraft Heinz has returned $700 million to shareholders, including $477 million in dividends and $225 million in share repurchases. As of March 29, the company had $1.7 billion in buyback authorization remaining, giving it flexibility in capital returns. Kraft Heinz's Strategic Pivot Kraft Heinz is exploring a major breakup that could involve spinning off a large chunk of its grocery business, including many familiar Kraft-branded staples. The new standalone entity could be valued as high as $20 billion. What remains would center around faster-growing segments like sauces, condiments, and spreads, brands like Heinz ketchup and Grey Poupon mustard, where growth has been steadier and margins more attractive. In Italy, Kraft Heinz just agreed to sell its infant and specialty food division to NewPrinces S.p.A., a top food producer in the region. The deal includes well-known brands like Plasmon, Nipiol, Dieterba, Aproten, and Biaglut, plus a key manufacturing plant in Latina, Italy. If approved by regulators, the transaction is expected to close by the end of 2025. Meanwhile, in the U.S., the company is putting $3 billion into upgrading its 30 American factories, the biggest investment it's made in over a decade. Management says the modernization will speed up new product launches and help the company defend its market share. What the Analysts Are Saying The market's read on Kraft Heinz right now is a mix of caution and curiosity, as investors await its next earnings report set for July 30, 2025. For the current quarter, analysts are expecting earnings per share of $0.64, down from $0.78 a year ago, a 17.95% drop, and for the full year 2025, the consensus is $2.57, a sharp decline from $3.06 in 2024. Analysts remain neutral. The 21 surveyed rate KHC a consensus 'Hold.' The average price target sits at $28.75, pointing to marginal upside from the current price. Conclusion Kraft Heinz is undergoing a transition, streamlining its operations, investing in its core, and is now potentially considering spinning off a major part of its business. With a nearly 6% dividend yield, the stock still earns its place in income portfolios, but the case for growth remains unclear. For now, it looks more like a 'wait-and-see' play than a breakout story. Unless the company shows real progress on execution or unlocks value through the rumored breakup, the stock probably stays rangebound.
