Motherwell have looked overseas again in their second managerial appointment of the year as they announced the arrival of Danish boss Jens Berthel Askou. The former Norwich defender joins from his role as FC Copenhagen assistant manager, subject to a work permit. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Askou replaces Michael Wimmer, who stepped down for family reasons after three months in charge to take up a position in his native Germany. Motherwell have appointed a new manager. | SNS Group The 42-year-old previously led Danish sides Vendsyssel and Horsens to promotion, FB Torshavn of the Faroe Islands to a league and cup double and was most recently manager of IFK Gothenburg. Askou left the Swedish side a year ago to join Sparta Prague as assistant manager and was quickly hired by Copenhagen after a change of manager at the Czech club in January. He helped them to a Danish league and cup double. 'This is a really proud moment for me,' he told Motherwell's official website. 'It's a huge honour to be selected to become the manager of Motherwell Football Club. Having spoken extensively with members of the club board, it was clear from the outset that our ideas, ambitions and morals align. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'We are all ambitious people and we're all hungry for success. I can't wait to arrive in Scotland and begin planning for the season ahead. There is a lot of work to be done, but it's highly exciting.' 'Rigorous' process Askou's playing career was predominantly based in Denmark but he also had a spell in Turkey and had two years at Norwich under former Well midfielder Paul Lambert. 'This has been a more rigorous process to recruit our new manager due to the incredible number of applications for the role,' chairman Kyrk Macmillan said. 'We had a high number of impressive applicants, but we were really drawn to Jens. His track record of working with big clubs, delivering success and developing young players matches up with all our philosophies here at Motherwell Football Club. 'He has handed 26 teenagers debuts in five-and-a-half seasons, which I think is evidence of Jens implementing his ideas and morals. The data and numbers impressed us, but more importantly, after speaking with Jens a number of times, he is a really ambitious character and a leader who was extremely keen to get the role here at our club.

Ainsworth backs Gills signing Palmer-Houlden to shine

Gillingham boss Gareth Ainsworth expects new signing Seb Palmer-Houlden to make a big impact for the League Two outfit next 21-year-old became the club's first summer arrival from Bristol City last month after spending the 2024-25 campaign at Scottish Premiership club Dundee. Palmer-Houlden netted nine times in 39 appearances for the Dark Blues and Ainsworth is confident the youngster can continue to develop following his debut season in senior football."Goalscoring over the last couple of years has been something we've wanted to improve and Seb has an unbelievable record at youth level," Ainsworth told BBC Radio Kent."He went to Scotland for his first loan and again showed what he was capable of in glimpses. He's going to complement this team and this squad really well."The Rainham End are going to love him because he just never stops running, he never stops chasing. He's very much my type of player."He's going to have a good career this boy and we're excited to bring him here." Only League Two's bottom club Morecambe found the net less times than the Gills in 2024-25 - by a single goal - and Ainsworth believes new man Palmer-Houlden can add ammunition to his side's lack of firepower."He wants to be a centre forward and an out-and-out centre forward playing for a team with something riding on it," he added."His progress was blocked at Bristol City because they have got some brilliant strikers and he's made a real brave decision to say 'no, I can do this'."It speaks volumes of the boy. Once we can get him in our regime, I'm sure he will be a success." Ainsworth reiterated that he will play a big part in the club's recruitment this summer after joining from Shrewsbury Town in March."We've said no player will come through the building without my saying so – I want to make that clear. That was one of my big non-negotiables at the start," he said."There has been all sorts of stories about recruitment in the past here."Me and Hesko [head of scouting Andy Hessenthaler] go back a long way and I made my league debut with [assistant coach] Ronnie Jepson so we've got a good team on the ground."But I think being the manager, if I'm the person that takes the successes and the failures on a Saturday, it is important that they are my players." One of five players to sign a new deal to stay at the club beyond the summer - 31-year-old midfielder Bradley Dack - was praised by Ainsworth."Bradley is definitely a player with quality above this level," he added."There's been question marks obviously about how much he is going to play but when you saw the glimpses that I saw at the end of the season, I'd be stupid not to try and re-sign Bradley Dack."He's got a very busy life away from football and everyone knows that, but that's part and parcel of the character that is Bradley Dack."He's that flamboyant winner; a magic man sometimes."

Ireland grateful to new keeper Max O'Leary after Luxembourg stalemate

Max O'Leary marked his long-awaited senior international debut with two vital saves to spare the Republic of Ireland's blushes in Luxembourg. The 28-year-old Bristol City keeper, who was first called up six years ago, denied Danel Sinani and substitute Vincent Thill either side of half-time to ensure Ireland emerged with a 0-0 friendly draw in their final game before they launch their World Cup qualification campaign in September. Advertisement Skipper Nathan Collins headed against the post and substitute Jack Taylor blasted against the bar at the end of either half but the visitors, who extended their unbeaten run to four games in unremarkable fashion in front of a crowd of just 6,312, could not find a winner for head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson on his 58th birthday. Our June international window ends in stalemate — Ireland Football ⚽️🇮🇪 (@IrelandFootball) June 10, 2025 A team shorn of the bulk of its Sky Bet Championship players because their season ended more than a month ago will look very different when the qualifiers come around, but few who were handed auditions in their place at the Stade de Luxembourg staked a persuasive claim to line up against Hungary or Armenia. O'Leary had to collect Tomas Moreira's 13th-minute cross under pressure from Sinani and then saw Gerson Rodrigues, whose participation following his conviction on three charges of assault and battery, one against a former girlfriend, continues to prove controversial – a banner in the stadium read 'Red card for violence against women' – drag a shot harmlessly wide in a low-key start. But the Republic almost fell behind nine minutes later when Evan Ferguson's loose pass allowed Sinani to slip away from Killian Phillips' desperate sliding challenge and send O'Leary diving to his left to palm away a curling attempt. Advertisement Rodrigues drove a 37th-minute ball across the face of goal which was only just too strong for Eldin Dzogovic at the far post after Luxembourg once again made ground down the left as a game low on quality limped towards half-time. However, Hallgrimsson's men went close two minutes before the break when Dara O'Shea helped Will Smallbone's free-kick back across goal for Collins to head against the upright. A couple of chances for Kasey McAteer early in the second half 🇱🇺 0-0 🇮🇪 — Ireland Football ⚽️🇮🇪 (@IrelandFootball) June 10, 2025 Kasey McAteer injected some life into the laboured Irish attack with an enterprising run and shot which slid wide of the far post within two minutes of the restart, but had it not been for Jason Knight's block at the other end, skipper Laurent Jans would have put the home side ahead with 49 minutes played. McAteer might have headed for goal from substitute Ryan Manning's cross but chose instead to pick out Troy Parrott, who was unable to convert with the game opening up, and O'Leary had to save from Aiman Dardari as Luxembourg responded. Advertisement Chances came at both ends with Taylor sweeping fellow substitute Festy Ebosele's 63rd-minute pull-back just wide and O'Leary saving Thill's drilled attempt with his left foot seconds later, but it was Taylor who came closest to winning it at the death when he rattled the crossbar with an 88th-minute piledriver.
