Proper records help Kozhikode, Payyoli climb ranks in national cleanliness survey
'It is not about what we did this year to improve the ranking, but about what we did not do in the previous years,' said S. Jayasree, health standing committee chairperson of the Corporation, who stressed that proper documentation and timely entries under the guidance of the Suchitwa Mission made all the difference this time.
'We have been doing our work well over the past few years, and the results were evident. However, we never gave much importance to the Swachh Survekshan Survey, and as a result, failed to present our achievements effectively during the inspections. All that changed this year,' she added.
Payyoli municipal chairman V.K. Abdurahman believed that sustained efforts to maintain cleanliness in the town over the past few years had now paid off. 'We worked diligently to achieve the best possible results under the State government's 'Malinya Muktha Navakeralam' project,' he said.
The municipality houses a material recovery facility (MCF) considered a model for the entire State, in addition to having a mini MCF in every division. Funds have already been earmarked for setting up more MCFs wherever needed. 'Installing awareness boards in public spaces, conducting awareness drives through mural paintings, and placing CCTV cameras at locations prone to illegal dumping helped us meet the target,' Mr. Abdurahman added.
The intervention of the Suchitwa Mission in preparing local bodies for the survey has yielded results across the State, evident from the number of local bodies, including major cities, that have made significant leaps in the rankings. This is the first time any urban civic body in Kerala has come within the top 1,000 ranks since the survey began in 2016.

MADURAI: With Madurai ranked last in the 40th place in Swachh Survekshan 2024 - 25 among cities having 10 lakh -population category, the city corporation has come in for severe criticism from activists. In response, the civic body has assured to work on the weaknesses and fare better next year. It is a small consolation that Madurai ranks third among TN cities, after Coimbatore and Chennai. Pointing out that the city has been given single digit rating in the waste management and processing category, activists said the corporation must take corrective measures immediately. K Jayachandran, a city based activist, said, "The corporation has established 38 micro composting centres (MCC) but only 30 centres are operational. Also, the MCCs are not fully utilised and hardly 40 - 50 tons of waste is processed on a daily basis. The centres have total capacity to process 190T of waste daily. The city corporation must utilise these MCCs better and improve processing rate." According to sources in the corporation, an average of 850 tonnes of waste is generated in the city daily. These are processed in 30 MCCs. Speaking about the measures the civic body has planned to implement to address the issues mentioned in the Swachh report, corporation commissioner Chitra Vijayan said, "All processes are being reviewed by officials and we will improve everything one by one. Madurai will have better results in the next survey." Corporation officials say they will increase the volume of waste processed at MCCs significantly. Also, the waste-to-energy plant that is proposed to be established in Vellakkal dump yard under CITIES 2.0 scheme will process over 600 tonnes of waste. Officials added that the implementation of these projects would improve waste generation and processing. THANE: Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has been awarded the first rank at the national level in the Swachh Survekshan 2024-25, outshining 4,589 cities across India. They were judged the best in the '3-10 lakh population' category. The corporation received the prestigious President's Award at a grand ceremony held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, where the President presented the honour. This recognition places Mira-Bhayandar at the forefront of cleanliness and sustainable urban management in the country. The city has also been declared a 5-Star Garbage-Free City and received the Water Plus Certification, showcasing its commitment to advanced waste management and environmental responsibility. The MBMC claimed that all this was possible due to the dedicated efforts of civic staff and citizens and also due to the implementation of innovative initiatives like QR-code-based waste tracking, composting using windrow technology, and daily sewage treatment of over 110 MLD. Residents ‘dissatisfied' with city's Swachh survey ranking

The capital city secured the spot among cities with populations between 3 lakh and 10 lakh, a category comprising 95 cities.
