Dynasty dance teams continue to dominate at the State Tournament

CBS News18-02-2025

The Minnesota State High School League Dance Team Tournament wrapped up over the weekend and dynasty programs continued to dominate.
"I'm really excited and proud to bring home another [State] title," said Lauren Adams, one of the captains of the Benilde-St. Margaret's Knightettes. Over the MSHSL state tournament, the Knightettes won first in Jazz and Second in High Kick.
For Adams and her fellow captains, Ellie Shideman, Molly Giersten and Casey Butner, this is the third Jazz State Championship they've earned in their time with the team. They have contributed to a total of 13 Jazz State titles won by this program since 1985.
"It all just comes down to handling the pressure well and doing it together," said Adams.
This was a back-to-back win for the Knightettes, who took home First in Jazz last year as well in Class AA.
"It's one thing to get to the top, it's another thing to stay there," said Giersten. "Getting to even say, 'I was a state champion,' and getting to medal in kick was an unreal experience that I got to do with our closest team yet."
Speaking of dynasties, the Eastview Lightning Dance team took home first in Jazz in Class AAA, adding to a long lineage of winning since 2000.
"We've won 23 championships," said Maya Schmidt, captain on the Eastview Lightning Dance Team.
"It's very special to be a part of the legacy," said Aliya Redding, captain on the Eastview Lightning Dance Team.
These Captains, including senior Nico Kruger, are proud of their contributions to this program that they hope will carry on.
"Dance team will never be a single sport, it's all of us out there together and that's what I love most about it," said Kruger. "Having that selflessness and discipline is what carried us [this season], and I hope that we leave that legacy that continues throughout the rest of the seasons at LDT."
The change all these dancers welcome the most is the attention and respect dance is gaining. All of them have seen the crowd at Target Center grow each year they've been on these teams.
"I've definitely seen a shift, and every year has been different and a big incline [in attendance], which I love to see," said Adams.
In Class A, Lac Qui Parle Valley Dance Team swept the competition, taking home first in Jazz and High Kick. This is their fourth time sweeping the state tournament in both styles of dance.

Cam Jordan wants Saints to trade for New York Giants QB Jameis Winston

Cam Jordan wants Saints to trade for New York Giants QB Jameis Winston The New York Giants and New Orleans Saints are two teams still trying to figure out the future of the quarterback position. While the Giants signed a pair of veterans in Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston during free agency, they also used the No. 25 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft on Jaxson Dart out of Ole Miss. Meanwhile, the Saints are dealing with the fallout of Derek Carr's sudden retirement after they used a second-round pick on Louisville's Tyler Shough. During a recent appearance on "Up & Adams" with Kay Adams, Saints star Cameron Jordan was asked what type of veteran quarterback he would want to bring in. He made his answer pretty clear. "There's Russ (Wilson) over there. They've got Jaxson Dart. My guy, Jameis, like, come on down. It makes a lot of sense," he said. "I'm going all in Jameis as a veteran quarterback. Come on over." On paper, a reunion with Winston makes sense. The Saints have a clear need for a veteran presence in the quarterback room following Carr's departure. With Shough expected to lead the way, Jake Haener has the most experience in the room going into his third season. There's also Spencer Rattler, a fifth-round pick going into his second season. The Giants may seem like they have a logjam at the quarterback position, but head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen need to throw as many darts on the board as they can. It's unlikely Winston would save their jobs if the Wilson experiment doesn't end well, but it could give them a bit more time to develop Dart for his eventual takeover. There could be a deal that happens if the Giants feel comfortable enough with Dart's progression but for now, Winston is firmly established as the backup in the quarterback room.

Ex-Broncos RB offers honest assessment of potential NFL comeback

Former Denver Broncos running back Melvin Gordon, who last played for the Baltimore Ravens in 2023, did not sound very optimistic about a potential comeback during an interview on FanDuel TV's Up & Adams show two weeks ago. "It's just... you know, I went the whole year last year without playing and, just being out a whole year -- it's not easy to just go back in there and just ... you know what I mean?" Gordon said when asked by Kay Adams about a potential return to the NFL. "You've been doing something for 20 years and then to take a year off, that's a long time. So it's just kind of up in the air with everything. Right now, I'm just kind of comfortable golfing and kind of spending extra time with the family and friends." Advertisement That sounds like the answer from a player who has essentially accepted that his career might be over. Adams then asked if Gordon wants to play again. "I mean, I've been doing it my whole life, like I said, so it's like, yeah, you do, but you kind of understand, you know, I understand my position," Gordon explained. "And as a running back, being out a year and being 32, it's just not that easy. They like younger backs -- they're cheaper, they come in -- so, you know, you can't really fight that. It's not a position like a receiver where you can come in and kind of steal some years -- our position kind of don't work like that." After spending the first five years of his career with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers, Gordon spent 2020-2022 with the Broncos, rushing for 2,222 yards and 19 touchdowns in 41 games. Gordon was cut by Denver following his fifth fumble of the 2022 season (and his 12th fumble overall with the Broncos). He then finished out the season on the practice squad of the Kansas City Chiefs. KC went on to win the Super Bowl, but Gordon did not play any snaps in the regular season or postseason with the Chiefs. After that, Gordon rushed 26 times for 81 yards and one touchdown in four games with the Ravens in 2023 (he also had one fumble). Gordon seems to sense that a comeback bid isn't practical. If his career has come to an end, the running back is hanging up his cleats as a two-time Pro Bowler with 9,056 yards from scrimmage and 70 career touchdowns on his resume.
