Not exclusionary but structured, TGSWREIS on transfer of 192 students from its ‘centres of excellence'

The Hindu10-06-2025
Top-performing students deserve environments tailored to their advanced level of learning; the policy is not exclusionary in nature but is structured around academic specialisation, the Telangana Social Welfare Residential Institutions Society (TGSWREIS) said on its decision to transfer out sub-90% scoring students from its centres of excellence (CoEs) to regional centres.
According to the findings of the State-level committee led by its secretary V.S. Alagu Varshini, 192 out of the total 1,600 students in its premier institutions, such as Gowlidoddi centre of excellence, did not meet its performance benchmarks. Particularly, 94 students failed to secure 85% marks, and 10 students failed in the Intermediate first-year examination.
Hence, based on data, the decision was taken to transfer out the 'under-performing students' to next best CoEs, and bring 874 top-performing candidates from the CoEs and district schools to the premier centres.
According to the Society, the government spends ₹1.35 lakh per student annually and supports the 'merit-based' policy in Gurukulams. The concluded academic year saw 1,393 students from various COEs and non-COEs scoring over 95% in Intermediate first-year examinations.
At CoEs or 'flagship centres', students who score over 90% are trained to focus and excel in national tests such as IIT-JEE, NEET, CMA and CLAT.
'The aim is to get more TGSWREIS students into IITs, NITs, AIIMS and other top institutions. For that, premier CoE campuses must remain merit-driven,' Ms.Alagu Varshini said. 'The transferred students will continue to receive academic support appropriate to their performance tier, including JEE and NEET coaching,' she added.
The Society added that the parents of top-performing students have welcomed the decision, but the protests are by parents who demand that the sub-90% students be allowed to continue in premier centres such as Gowlidoddi.
'Principals have clearly shown that these children are not only poor in performing academics but also disturb the environment for other children. Also, by replacing them with talented children, justice is done to the really talented. Even if we continue the poor performers, there is no scope for them to stretch with the inherent limitation,' the Society's official release stated.
Officially, Gowlidoddi campus starting 2025-26 academic year will be an exclusively IIT-JEE preparation centre (separately for boys and girls), and similar premier or elite IIT-JEE centres with an increased strength of 400 are in Uppal (boys) and Alugnur (girls).
The designated CoEs for NEET are in Chilkur (boys), Mahindra Hills (girls) and Falaknuma (girls). For MEC and CEC streams, institutions are at Saroornagar (girls), Ibrahimpatnam (boys), and Medchal (for CMA and CLAT preparation).

Will hold dharna if West Bengal's college admissions do not begin soon, warns BJP

Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari warned of sit-in demonstrations outside the State Education Department headquarters at Bikash Bhavan from next week if the State government does not initiate college admissions and publish pending exam results by the end of this week (August 24, 2025). On Monday (August 18, 2025), Mr. Adhikari headed a delegation of 15 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators to meet Governor CV Ananda Bose and submitted a memorandum seeking his urgent intervention in the prolonged delay in the publishing of results of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE). WBJEE, an entrance exam for undergraduate engineering, technology, architecture, and pharmacy courses in West Bengal's State-run and State-aided universities, was conducted on April 27, but the results have been delayed, likely because the matter surrounding the State's Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation list is currently being heard by the Supreme Court. 'It has been three months [since examinations have been concluded], yet first-year admissions have not yet begun. JEE results have not been declared. This is a very serious issue. Nearly 5 lakh candidates and their guardians are very worried. They are suffering… If college admissions do not start by this week and the JEE results are not published, BJP MLAs will hold dharnas in front of Bikash Bhavan from next week,' Mr. Adhikari said after meeting the Governor. In West Bengal, 8,200 educational institutions shut down last year, Mr. Adhikari said. He also accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of trying to privatise higher education in the State. 'The delay will lead to drop [in] student turnout as many may be forced to reluctantly seek opportunity outside Bengal. In addition to the worst hit future of lakhs of meritorious students, the reputation of the educational institution in West Bengal [gets] hit which will reduce the number of students as they will go outside in huge number,' the memorandum to the Governor dated August 18, 2025, reads. Meanwhile, the West Bengal government's Directorate of Medical Education, in an 'urgent notice' on August 18, announced that the counselling and admission process for medical and dental courses under National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2025 'has been kept under abeyance till further order.' 'The future of the state's medical students has been pushed into darkness. Why was the admission counseling, once started, suddenly halted indefinitely? Is this yet another attempt to appease narrow political interests by granting undue privilege to a particular group under the guise of reservation?' Union Minister and BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar questioned on Monday, referring to the order. On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, activists of the Students Federation of India (SFI) staged a demonstration near Bikash Bhavan to protest against the delay in WBJEE results and the deferment of MBBS and BDS counselling. Several protestors were detained as the police disrupted SFI's protest march to Bikash Bhavan.

TET candidates, SFI members clash with cops

Kolkata: A protest by 2022 TET-qualified job-seekers, demanding immediate recruitment to 50,000 vacant posts in primary schools, led to a clash with police at Karunamoyee in Salt Lake on Tuesday. Protesters emerging from the metro station were detained one by one, and many were put into police vans. Several of them sat on the road in protest, while some evaded barricades to reach the Primary Education Board office. Traffic was disrupted and a scuffle ensued. The standoff went on as protesters arrived in groups in multiples phases. It coincided with another agitation at Bikash Bhavan, where SFI protested against the delay in JEE results. tnn You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata | Gold Rates Today in Kolkata | Silver Rates Today in Kolkata Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Sudershan Reddy's candidature strengthens our collective resolve to safeguard democracy, says Stalin

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin congratulated retired Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy on being named INDIA bloc's Vice-Presidential candidate. 'I wholeheartedly congratulate Thiru B. Sudershan Reddy on being chosen as the vice-presidential candidate of the Opposition,' he said. Mr. Reddy was a jurist of integrity and independence, and a champion of civil liberties and social justice, and upheld constitutional values throughout his career, Mr. Stalin said. 'At a time when our institutions are under strain, his candidature strengthens our collective resolve to safeguard democracy and protect the spirit of the Constitution,' he added. Contending that all the independent institutions meant to safeguard democracy had been turned into the 'subsidiary bodies of the ruling party', and that the Constitution was in danger, he said, 'In such a situation, the responsibility before us is to support only the one who believes in India's fundamental ideals of secularism, federalism, social justice, and unity in diversity.' Mr. Stalin alleged that the BJP-led government at the Centre was 'continuously inflicting injustice on Tamil Nadu' — refusing to accept the State's rightful demands such as exemption from NEET, recognition of Keeladi's antiquity, fairness in fund devolution, and release of educational funds. 'Through Governors, it has been running a parallel government and blocking the functioning of State governments, while engaging in efforts to weaken institutions of higher education.' The DMK was consistently and vociferously raising its voice in Parliament against the unconstitutional denial of the State rights, the centralisation of power, the rising tide of hate propaganda, and the relentless imposition of Hindi and Sanskrit — 'all of which dig a grave for the Constitution and attempt to bury it', Mr. Stalin said. The DMK president said 'secular-spirited people of Tamil Nadu' had, in successive elections, overwhelmingly voted for the MPs and MLAs of the DMK-led alliance to defend the rights of the State and safeguard the Constitution. 'This decision stands as both a reaffirmation of the people's faith and a mark of respect for their mandate and sentiment.' 'As someone who can create space for constructive debates in Parliament, conduct the House by giving the rightful place to the voice of the Opposition, and as a democrat who has faith in the Constitution and in the principles of federalism, pluralism, social justice, and linguistic rights — Mr. Sudershan Reddy stands. As the opposite of anti-federalism, authoritarianism, and the trend of spreading hatred — Mr. Sudershan Reddy stands,' he said.
