Stranger Things season five: Everything we know about show finale from release date and surprise split
Netflix have confirmed the release date for Stranger Things ' final season as well as releasing the first footage, but fans are up in arms over a surprise split.
The long-running and hugely popular TV series, one of the most successful in the history of the platform and is destined to finally come to an end after almost a decade.
The series spawned the careers of several stars, with the returning Millie Bobby Brown having landed a string of top TV and film roles since her first appearance as Eleven in the series.
Interest in the final series is sky high after a cliffhanger episode at the end of season four that appeared to show the Upside-Down encroaching on the fictional rural town of Hawkins, Indiana.
But fans are going to have to be more patient than usual when Season Five gets under way.
That's because the final season is being split into three parts.
The footage in a trailer released by Netflix shows Hawkins fully under attack by the Upside-Down, confirming what was hinted at in season four's finale.
One fan responding to the footage simply went: "CHILLS", whilst another said: "OMG 3 parts? How many episodes are we getting? Please let it be good and dont f this up!"
Whilst it has previously been confirmed that the final season will be eight episodes long, fans were less than pleased to find out that the series would be released in three parts.
Responding on X, previously Twitter, one fan said: "Netflix getting wayyy to comfortable with this "volume" bullsh*t."
Another said: "THREE PARTS MAKE IT STOP."
Volume 1 will release November 26, with Volume 2 releasing on Christmas Day. Then, finally, Volume 3 will see the show come to a close on New Year's Eve, 2025.
Another fan pointed out that for many, releasing the finale on New Year's Eve will make it near impossible to watch on the first night, leaving the likelihood of spoilers incredibly high.
Regardless, most seemed thrilled at the footage, with one fan simply saying: "the NOSTALGIA this show gives me is insane. i'm not ready for it to end."
Though Netflix have remained tight lipped on what to expect from the final season of Stranger Things, they have given away some details.
The Duffer Brothers, the creators of the show, stated that the final season would essentially be 'eight blockbuster movies' and hinted that they filmed 'over 650 hours of footage'.
Matt Duffer however has hinted that, whilst the story that kicked off the show is coming to an end, that didn't necessarily spell the end for Stranger Things.
He said: "While this might be the end of the story for Mike, Hopper, Dustin, Lucas, Eleven, and the others, it's not goodbye for Stranger Things. There are many more stories to tell."

Ex-partner of disgraced surgeon reveals how his horrifying double life emerged
Writer and director Benita Alexander eventually went on to co-produce He Lied About Everything, a documentary based on her former lover's fall from grace. An ex-partner of former stem cell surgeon Paolo Macchiarini thought she was living a real-life fairytale until she uncovered his dark web of lies. Writer and director Benita Alexander eventually went on to co-produce He Lied About Everything, a documentary based on her former lover's fall from grace. In 2023, Macchiarini was sentenced to two and a half years in prison by a Swedish court for aggravated assault against patients he treated. The court found he had acted with criminal intent in his treatment of three patients who received trachea transplants while he was working at the Karolinska Institute. The Mirror reports that all three patients died after suffering complications from the procedure. The court ruled that Macchiarini knew the surgeries were unlikely to succeed but disregarded the risks to the patients. Macchiarini bypassed essential safety protocols: he conducted no animal testing, clinical trials, or safety reviews before implanting the synthetic tracheas into human patients. His team also allegedly failed to obtain government approvals for the artificial windpipes, chemicals, and stem cells used, and did not seek ethical clearance from Stockholm's review board. One surviving patient, Yesim Cetir, reportedly spent three years in intensive care at Karolinska University Hospital and underwent nearly 200 surgeries. Investigations by both the Karolinska Institute and Karolinska University Hospital later revealed that complications and patient deaths may have been intentionally concealed. Macchiarini also faced accusations of scientific misconduct from several colleagues. In 2011, Macchiarini created the world's first artificial windpipe using a plastic trachea scaffold infused with a patient's own stem cells, aiming to prevent rejection of the transplanted organ. As part of her job as a producer, Alexander arranged to meet Macchiarini at Boston's Mandarin Oriental hotel to discuss his work. She later told The New York Post: 'I'm not a believer in love at first sight. But the second our eyes locked, that's what it felt like.' Though their first meeting sparked romantic feelings, Alexander tried to keep their relationship professional at first. She was coping with her ex-husband's battle with an aggressive brain cancer, and Macchiarini was a steady support. She said: 'He was an amazing friend to me during that time, and a solid, reliable pillar of strength. 'He spent hours listening to me talk about it all and offering gentle advice.' By June 2013, the pair were in a relationship and on Christmas Day that year, Macchiarini proposed. Alexander happily accepted. Shortly after, he told her he had to leave for an 'emergency VIP surgery' and claimed he was part of a secret circle of elite doctors treating figures like Bill and Hillary Clinton, Emperor Akihito of Japan, and President Obama, according to Vanity Fair. Then, throughout 2014, Macchiarini teased extravagant nuptials, including a Catholic ceremony officiated by Pope Francis at the Vatican's summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, a four-day celebration, and performances by Andrea Bocelli and John Legend. Alexander welcomed Macchiarini's offer to surprise her with an Italian wedding. She said: 'All I had to do was buy the dress.' But in May 2015, the truth unravelled. Just as Alexander planned to move to Europe and quit her job, she received an email from a friend titled 'The Pope.' It linked to an article revealing Pope Francis would be in South America on their supposed wedding day. She said: 'I demanded an explanation from Paolo. He claimed Vatican politics had interfered with the plans.' But when she contacted the Italian castle where the wedding was allegedly booked, 'nobody there knew Paolo's name.' She cancelled the wedding and hired a private investigator, who revealed Macchiarini was still married to his wife of 29 years — and living in Barcelona with another mistress and their two children. 'I just didn't want to put two and two together,' Alexander said. 'I didn't want Paolo to not be the man I believed him to be. I didn't want the fairy tale to end.' The Vatican confirmed Pope Francis never knew Macchiarini or promised to officiate the wedding. Bocelli's wife also denied his involvement. On what would have been their wedding weekend, Alexander, disguised in a blonde wig, and two friends confronted Macchiarini at his Barcelona home. A woman with two children emerged, confirming his deception. 'He was like an embarrassed schoolboy who had been caught,' friend Leigh McKenzie told Vanity Fair. Alexander watched silently from the car, marking the definitive end of their relationship. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! One Piece fans 'so hyped' as Netflix drops season 2 trailer with Bridgerton favourite
The Straw Hats are back Netflix has just dropped a fresh trailer for One Piece season two, teasing new characters featured in the forthcoming instalment. The live-action anime is set to return for its second series in 2026 and has already been renewed for season three. A new teaser, released on August 9, introduces fans to major characters, including one played by Bridgerton favourite Charithra Chandran. The action-packed trailer kicks off with Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) narrating: "Everything I've done, everywhere I go, is for the One Piece," before viewers catch a glimpse at the villains the crew will face. According to the synopsis, this season will feature "fiercer adversaries and the most perilous quests yet." It adds: "Luffy and the Straw Hats set sail for the extraordinary Grand Line — a legendary stretch of sea where danger and wonder await at every turn. "As they journey through this unpredictable realm in search of the world 's greatest treasure, they'll encounter bizarre islands and a host of formidable new enemies." Chandran is among the show's newcomers, stepping into the role of Nefertari Vivi, also known as Miss Wednesday. She dons a blue ponytail in the trailer and looks worlds away from her Regency attire as Bridgeton's Edwina Sharma. Fans will also spot Brendan Murray (Devil's Peak) towering over the Straw Hats as Brogy, while Callum Kerr (Hollyoaks) appears as Smoker, and Lera Abova (Honey, Don't!) steps into the role of Nico Robin, also known as Miss All-Sunday. The YouTube teaser has racked up over two million views in less than 24 hours, with fans expressing their excitement in the comments section. "I'M SO HYPED," exclaimed one fan, with another stating: "I've never smiled non-stop as I did for this trailer with any other trailer before." A third penned: "As a One Piece fan, who is caught up with the anime, this makes me proud and excited for this season." Meanwhile, a fourth said: "Teasing season 3 is in production during a season 2 first look is diabolically wonderful." Based on Eiichiro Oda's beloved manga, One Piece first landed on Netflix in 2023. The series follows Monkey D. Luffy (played by Godoy) and his Straw Hat Pirates crew, as they journey across the seas in search of a legendary treasure known as the One Piece.
