Report: C.J. Gardner-Johnson will participate in Texans' mandatory minicamp
Texans defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson reported to the team facility Monday ahead of Tuesday's start of a two-day mandatory minicamp, Aaron Wilson of KPRC reports.
Gardner-Johnson, who the Eagles traded to the Texans this offseason, skipped the team's voluntary offseason workouts to train on his own with his personal trainer.
'I've really been like to myself,' Gardner-Johnson told Wilson. 'The week I was there, it was very, very closer than places I've been before. Because this is a brand-new organization, trying to be the first team to put a bull on the ring. I had to step back. I'm too much sometimes. I think coming off a Super Bowl, it's a little too much for guys who feel like they're at the top of their profession right now because of who they are. That's respectable. So, we had to step back and then start to humble up, because now I'm at the bottom of the mountain with a team that's never been to the top. So, I can't bring the top of the mountain to the bottom of the mountain. I can't do that. It's like an avalanche. I don't want to cause a cluster---.'
Gardner-Johnson, 27, led the league in interceptions in 2022 with six and has 18 in his six-year career. He spent three seasons in New Orleans and was with the Eagles in 2022 and 2024 after a one-year stint in Detroit in 2023 that didn't go well.
The trade from the Eagles took him by surprise.
'I feel highly disrespected, but it's a business,' Gardner-Johnson said. ''Never was an All-Pro or Pro Bowl! Never!' [I] led the league in interceptions. What more do you want?
'People say, 'He's a hazard. He's this. He's that.' I never been no hazard, bro. They got no real issues on me. That black ball ain't going to work on me, because I got me a ring. I got me one. I got three more championships in me. I'm probably going to win the next three. I'm going to get me another Super Bowl this year. Just watch.'
The Texans have never made the AFC Championship Game, but they won the AFC South and a playoff game each of the past two seasons.

Historic College Football Program Lands Former National Championship Coach
Historic College Football Program Lands Former National Championship Coach originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Tennessee Volunteers made an addition to their coaching staff Monday. CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz reported the Volunteers hired defensive assistant coach Marion Hobby. Advertisement An ex-Tennessee first-team All-SEC player, Hobby will serve as a defensive analyst for the Volunteers. "Hobby, a former All-SEC player at Tennessee, has coached in four NFL conference championship games (Saints, Jaguars, Bengals 2x) and a Super Bowl," Zenitz posted on X. "Hobby was also part of Clemson's 2016 national championship team." Hobby spent the past four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals as their defensive line coach. The defensive end began his coaching career as a strength and conditioning coach for the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks in 1995. He received his first opportunity to coach a defensive line unit with the Ole Miss Rebels in 1999. Hobby coached at Ole Miss for five years and then spent one season with the Clemson Tigers before jumping to the NFL with the New Orleans Saints. After two seasons with the Saints, Hobby returned to the college ranks with the Duke Blue Devils. He then became co-defensive coordinator at Clemson from 2011-16 before going back to the NFL. "The Volunteers are hoping to get back to the College Football Playoff, and adding an experienced coach who knows what it takes to succeed in Knoxville is a huge move," wrote On3's Steve Samra. Rodeo ministry offers midday message amid the competition hustle
KTAB/KRBC coverage of the 2025 Texas High School Rodeo Finals is sponsored locally by Capital Farm Credit ABILENE, Texas () – In rodeo culture, it is customary to have a church service, most of which are held early in the morning before competition starts. However, with the compact schedule at the Texas High School Rodeo Finals, one group is catering to the schedule during the lunch hour with rodeo professionals for inspiration. 'Definitely a first' Texas high school rodeo competitors shelter through Sunday storms It is a serene space to escape from the chaos that's outside, something rodeo professional Trey Johnson knows all too well. Johnson said he remembers his old high school competition days. 'When you're competing the same day, you only have a couple of hours to go and eat a meal, get back, and then you've got to prepare again,' Johnson recalled. 'When I was in high school, there weren't very many people who would show up. Usually, it was early in the morning, like 7:00, 7:30 in the morning.' With the small window of time that contestants sometimes face, Crossroads Rodeo Ministries is offering a compromise: a good meal and something that is deeply rooted in rodeo culture – church. Founder Robert Till said that most of the time, contestants do not realize just how significant the church's influence is. 'There are 60 church services going on and 60 [rodeo competitions], they think, in their region. 'I go to my next rodeo and there will be a church service there,' but nobody's thinking how big this thing is,' Till said. 'It's different than the pressure in the arena. They were fishing for words, I just said an oasis. And they said, yes, it's just a place where they can come and let down, which for us makes them open. They hear the message.' Texas teen follows in sister's footsteps on Day 1 of State High School Rodeo Finals Johnson attended services all the time growing up in the competitive environment, but he said it wasn't until his adult life that he took them seriously. 'I had a car accident; I woke up and was going 70 miles an hour on a four-way highway with a truck and a horse trailer. It jumped a water corridor,' Johnson said. 'That night in that upside-down horse trailer, I just made a decision. I just want to know God, I don't want to be religious. I don't want to know just church.' Gunner Link was born with just one hand, but that isn't slowing him down Now, he and Till bring in big names in the rodeo world to help inspire competitors during their small break from the competition. Johnson said they cater to the lunch hour, one of the only times competitors can get a break. 'It lets you kind of stay. You can let down your guard, eat lunch, learn something, but then you dial back in and you're ready. You don't feel like you're rushing or behind the ball,' Johnson said. A pillar of competition continues to be a place of recharge. The group will tie up their services tomorrow. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. How Jets' Steve Wilks is challenging Sauce Gardner to reach next level
New Jets defensive coordinator Steve Wilks gave cornerback Sauce Gardner a challenge when the two met after Wilks was hired. 'He's been a Pro Bowl player,' Wilks said. 'How consistent can he be to take it to another level? That's one of the things that I challenged him on Day 1 when we had our conversation. I felt like, and you guys feel the same way, that he's one of the top corners in the league, but that consistency of being that dominant player each and every week, that's what we're looking for and that's been his challenge this offseason. 'He's very gifted, and I told him sometimes your greatest strength is your greatest weakness. He's a guy that sometimes that 85 percent is still better than everybody around him, so his thing is, and I told him, compete against yourself. That's where he has to get better, which he will.' Gardner was first-team All-Pro in his first two seasons but did not have as strong of a season last year. He is eligible for a contract extension, and the Jets face a major decision on how much to invest in the star corner. One knock on Gardner in his career has been his lack of interceptions. Sauce Garnder runs a drill during Jets' minicamp practice on June 11, 2025. Bill Kostroun for New York Post He has three in three years, including one last year. Wilks said Gardner is working on it. 'That's finishing as we talked about, and he's been working on that for us,' Wilks said. 'Taking more time with the Jugs [machine] and getting extra catches in and understanding how to catch the ball away from your body just like a receiver would do. But I always say this, and I know there's a lot of talk about him, but he's only going to be as good as the guys around him, so it's all about trying to make sure that we all, particularly on the back end, pushing in the same direction.' Second-year WR Malachi Corley missed practice again Wednesday with an undisclosed injury. Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand talks with reporters on June 11, 2025. Bill Kostroun for New York Post Corley has missed a lot of time this spring, and it could cost him in a tight competition at wide receiver. Offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand said Corley will have to catch up in training camp. 'That's a great question really for him to ask, 'How do I get myself mentally caught back up, because I wasn't able to get the physical reps this spring?' ' Engstrand said. 'And ultimately, that's going to be what it is, because the other guys do, they have a handful of practices ahead of him and those physical reps. So, he's going to have to find a way to catch himself up with that stuff.' Rookie WR Arian Smith also did not practice Wednesday. LB Quincy Williams was on the field in uniform but did not participate in team drills. QB Justin Fields said he plans on getting together with the wide receivers and tight ends during the break before training camp.
