National Herald case: Court defers inspection of documents
Delhi court
on Thursday deferred the inspection of files in the
National Herald case
to August 18 and 19.
On July 29, special judge Vishal Gogne deferred the order on taking cognisance of the chargesheet filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), saying further inspection of the case files was required and that the investigating officer (IO) had to appear with the same on August 7 and 8.

The court on Thursday said, "The matter could not be taken up today on account of lengthy arguments on charge in the matter titled CBI v. Lalu Prasad Yadav and others (land-for-jobs-case) and inspection of case diaries in another matter titled CBI v. Lalu Prasad Yadav and others (case linked to alleged irregularities in the IRCTC) in the afternoon session."
It said the matter regarding the land-for-jobs case was again listed for submissions on charge on August 8.
"Hence, the present matter shall be taken up for further inspection of the case file on August 18 and 19. The earlier date given for August 8 is cancelled," the judge said.

The court is hearing the submissions on the point of cognisance by the ED and the accused on a day-to-day basis from July 2.

, late party leaders Motilal Vora and Oscar Fernandes, as well as Suman Dubey, Sam Pitroda and a private company, Young Indian, of conspiracy and money laundering over the alleged fraudulent takeover of Rs 2,000 crore worth properties belonging to Associated Journals Limited (AJL), which published the National Herald newspaper.
The agency alleges that the Gandhis held the majority 76 per cent shares in Young Indian, which allegedly fraudulently usurped the assets of AJL in exchange for a Rs 90 crore loan.
The chargesheet names Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, Pitroda, Dubey, Sunil Bhandari, Young Indian and Dotex Merchandise Pvt Ltd. PTI

Chandrababu pledges to double weavers' income
Vijayawada: Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday asserted that the coalition government's primary objective was to double the income of handloom artisans in Andhra Pradesh. He was speaking at the 11th National Handloom Day celebrations here. The Chief Minister declared that financial aid of Rs 25,000 per year would be given to each weaver family under the 'Nethanna Bharosa' scheme. He later visited the Weavershala, which was established with the support of Minister for Education and IT Nara Lokesh, and interacted with artisans, who showed him their products. Reaffirming that the coalition government had been fulfilling its election promises, including those made to the handloom community, he confirmed that, starting this month, 200 units of electricity will be provided free for handlooms and 500 units for power looms. This initiative will benefit 93,000 handloom-owning families and 50,000 power loom-owning families, while costing the government an additional Rs 190 crore annually. He pointed out that the TDP government was the first to introduce a pension for weavers at age 50. Chandrababu Naidu announced that the government would reimburse the 5 per cent GST on handloom products -- a move that will cost the state Rs 15 crore per year. A Thrift Fund of Rs 5 crore will also be established to benefit 5,386 handloom artisans. In a move to preserve the industry's heritage, a Handloom Museum will be set up in Amaravati. The government will also officially celebrate the birth anniversary of handloom weavers' leader Pragada Kotaiah as a state event and install a bronze statue in his honor at a Handloom circle near the NRI Hospital on the Vijayawada-Guntur highway, he said.

Cops to continue ‘Op Safe Campus Zone' near edu institutions
Vijayawada: State police have decided to continue 'Operation Safe Campus Zone', a comprehensive anti-drug initiative that was successfully conducted from July 8 to 12, 2025, across all districts in the state. The operation aimed to eradicate illicit drug sales within 100 yards of educational institutions, following the TOFEI (Tobacco Free Educational Institution) guidelines framework. While narcotic drugs, including ganja, are prohibited everywhere, this drive specifically targeted their elimination from school and college premises, along with other harmful substances like tobacco, gutka, and related products that endanger student health and safety. DGP Harish Kumar Gupta announced on Thursday in a statement that the police department has decided to extend the operation due to the excellent results achieved during the initial phase. He stated that the police verified 16,806 establishments across the state in five days and registered 25,807 cases against offenders who violated the rules by selling ganja and other banned products. A total fine of Rs. 40,62,092 was collected during the operation. Visakhapatnam district recorded 3,468 cases, Kakinada 3,115 cases, and Prakasam 4,015 cases. The police conducted searches for narcotic drugs, including ganja, NRX drugs, cough syrups, cigarettes, tobacco products, and gutka being sold near educational institutions. The operation followed a systematic approach, including intelligence-led targeting of hotspots within a 100-yard radius of educational institutions, multi-agency coordination involving the District Intelligence Wing and SB, and maintaining secrecy to ensure a surprise element. Comprehensive documentation was carried out through mandatory videography, and legal compliance was ensured under the NDPS Act 1985, BNSS 2023, and BSA 2023. Operation Safe Campus Zone will continue as an ongoing initiative to maintain sustained pressure on drug trafficking networks near educational institutions. The success of the initial five-day intensive phase has laid a strong foundation for regular monitoring and enforcement activities. The DGP stated that the operation successfully achieved its primary objective of disrupting drug sales near educational institutions, with the substantial number of cases registered and fines imposed demonstrating its effectiveness in creating a strong deterrent presence.

Naidu betrayed weavers: YSRCP
Guntur: YSRCP organised celebrations of National Handloom Day on Thursday at Tadepalli, where party leaders, including MLC Lella Appi Reddy, former Devanga Corporation Chairman Surendra Babu, and former APCO Chairman Chillapalli Mohan Rao, launched a scathing attack on the coalition government for its failure to uplift the handloom sector. They accused Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and his administration of betraying weavers by abandoning election promises, plunging the community into distress, while contrasting this with the transformative support provided during the YSRCP's tenure under YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. The leaders highlighted the coalition government's inaction on critical promises, including GST relief, free electricity up to 200 units, health insurance, and the Nethanna Nestham scheme, which remain unfulfilled 14 months into their rule. MLC Lella Appireddy asserted, 'Under YS Jagan's leadership, weavers flourished with Rs 3,700 crore in aid over five years, including Rs 1.2 lakh to 85,000 families through Nethanna Nestham.' Today, the coalition government offers nothing but empty words, leaving weavers in despair, he said.
