Jacksonville Sharks end undefeated streak with loss at home

The Sharks opened the first quarter scoring with a Kaleb Barker to Tyler King touchdown pass, but the Pirates scored the next two times to set the tone.

The Sharks did regain the lead on a field goal in the second quarter, but that would be Jacksonville's last lead of the game.
They were playing catch-up on the scoreboard most of the night.
In the third quarter, Tyler King had to leave the game with an injury. King was hit on a helmet-to-helmet play in the second half.
In the fourth, the Sharks' defense came up with a fumble recovery, but the offense couldn't capitalize. After a Barker sack and another interception by Floyd, the Pirates added a field goal to make it 42-29.
Still fighting, Jacksonville made one final push. Barker found Jaden Stoshak for a touchdown, bringing the Sharks within seven. But time ran out on the comeback attempt, and the Pirates held on for a 42-35 win.

Eastern NC volleyball player chosen for 14U All-American Team
JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — One Eastern NC volleyball player is making her name known as a player and leader among her teammates. Savannah Preston plays for the Coastal FCA Volleyball Club 14U National Team. 'She immediately had leadership qualities that we saw from the first practice,' Assistant Coach Hannah Albaugh said. 'She immediately had the best attitude and she was encouraging to all of her teammates and she showed that on and off of the court. She had the hardest hustle. She had the biggest heart and she continues to show that on and off the court throughout the whole season.' While Preston serves a teammate, huddle leader and standout player, she was recently recognized and honored with a spot on the All-American Team and will get to play in Italy over the summer. Preston was the youngest and smallest player at the Exact Sports Camp in Greensboro which led to her invitation to the team with her skills on the court standing out. 'I practiced as a setter there and I was the only eighth-grader there, so it was really nerve racking,' Preston said. 'But, I went to this program and I came back and they reviewed my footage and they were like, 'Do you want to come out with us to Italy to practice? And I was like, Heck yeah.'' Preston said while it is a daunting task competing at the world-wide level, she's ready. 'This is gonna be competitive and I am ready and I just wanna play and have great footage and wanna be there and be like 'Oh my gosh, this is something I get to experience,'' she said. 'Being able to just put herself out there, not being worried about making a mistake, not worried that she's letting anyone down, you can tell her identity is not like in her performance but in who God says she is,' Club Director Rachel Albaugh said. 'And so, she just has a ton of confidence. And so, I feel like she's grown a lot that way. She doesn't hesitate and just puts it all out there.' Preston leads with good character and a serving heart, always looking to be uplifting to teammates or opponents on the volleyball court and serving as an inspiration to other players. 'Don't let one mistake or one game define you because I've made some pretty bad mistakes,' Preston said. 'I've also had pretty bad games. So, I think that if you want to do it and you are committed and you know you want to be playing volleyball, don't stop no matter what happens, just keep on going.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Phillies' Rob Thomson Optimistic Amid Losing Streak, 'Just Gotta Keep Grinding'
Phillies' Rob Thomson Optimistic Amid Losing Streak, 'Just Gotta Keep Grinding' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies are in the middle of a losing streak following their defeat to the Pittsburgh Pirates. After May got off to a great start, the Phillies dropped the final three games of the month. Into June, the Phillies have won just one game in their last five. Advertisement On Phillies Postgame Live from NBC Sports Philadelphia, after the loss to the Pirates, Phillies manager Rob Thomson expressed optimism amid the team's current losing streak. "Just gotta keep grinding," Thomson said. "In a little bit of a funk right now, but gotta keep grinding through it." Following the loss to the Pirates, the Phillies sit at 37-26, in second place in the National League East, and 2.5 games behind the New York Mets. The Phillies' offense has scored 295 runs, 11 more than the Mets, while their pitching has allowed 278 runs, 67 more than the Mets. Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson (59) looks on from the dugout against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC LeClaire-Imagn Images What was supposed to be a strong suit for the Phillies has turned into the reason for their struggles. Jesus Luzardo's past two starts, allowing 20 earned runs combined, have put the Phillies back significantly. The bullpen has blown a few games, and let games get out of hand often this year. Advertisement When the pitching is humming, the defense will often crumble, or the offense will struggle to knock in baserunners. It's been a season where the Phillies haven't put together a strong winning streak against teams that aren't below .500. Against teams that are above .500, the Phillies are 16-18, losing record. The losing streak and recent slide have been tough for the Phillies. But Thomson sees a path forward. With two more games against the Pirates and a series against the Mets near the end of June on the horizon, the Phillies still have plenty of time to turn things around. Thomson believes in the team and thinks that despite the funk, the team can get through it and come out strong on the other side. Bryan Reynolds' bases-loaded triple leads Pirates to season-high 4th straight win, 10-3 over Marlins
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bryan Reynolds hit a bases-loaded triple to cap a four-run third inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the skidding Miami Marlins 10-3 on Monday night for their season-high fourth straight win. Reynolds put the Pirates ahead 4-1 with a line drive to the gap in right-center field off Eury Perez (0-1), who was making his first major league start since Sept. 20, 2023, after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Reynolds' hit came after Andrew McCutchen had an RBI infield single. Advertisement All nine Pirates had hits, and McCutchen and Adam Frazier paced a 15-hit attack with three apiece. Brett Sullivan had two RBIs in his Pirates debut after being called up Saturday from Triple-A Indianapolis. Perez lasted just three innings and gave up four runs and four hits. He had five strikeouts and two walks while throwing 70 pitches as the Marlins lost for the eighth time in their last nine games. Despite missing so much time, Perez is still the youngest pitcher in the major leagues at 22 years, 55 days. The Pirates broke the game open with a four-run sixth that included two throwing errors by the Marlins on Ke'Bryan Hayes' bunt single. That put Pittsburgh ahead 8-2. Advertisement The Marlins' Otto Lopez hit a leadoff home run in the second inning, his sixth, to open the scoring. Miami lost for the eighth time in nine games. Pirates rookie starter Mike Burrows allowed two runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and three walks. Caleb Ferguson (2-0) pitched two perfect innings. The start of the game was delayed 41 minutes because of the threat of inclement weather. Key moment Reynolds' triple gave the Pirates all the runs they would need. Key stat The Pirates are 20-8 against NL East teams at home since the start of last season. Up next Marlins RHP Sandy Alcantara (2-7, 7.89 ERA) faces Pirates RHP Mitch Keller (1-8, 4.13) on Tuesday night in the middle game of the series. ___ AP MLB: John Perrotto, The Associated Press
