Kieran Shoemark needed more time… but John Gosden clearly felt differently

The Sun07-05-2025

TIME is the most precious commodity in life. Maybe John Gosden thought he was running out of time. Kieran Shoemark just needed some time.
If they weren't going to give the young guy time, it makes me wonder why the Gosden's - John trains in partnership with son Thady - appointed Shoemark to follow in the footsteps of Frankie Dettori.
1
They did so knowing Shoemark would need support. A raw talent. He took the job clearly not being a Dettori. But the potential was there to be a high flyer.
When Kieran Shoemark took over as No1 rider for the Gosden's in 2024, he had waited on the sidelines for the previous season to get the job he had dreamt of as a child.
Shoemark is a man who likes to do the right thing. In 2023 he told the trainer giving him the most rides, Charlie Hills, that he was heading to Clarehaven at the end of the campaign.
As a result, the Hills mounts quickly dried up. 2023 was a slow, hard and tough year. But for Shoemark it was worth the pain.
The agony, though, would continue.
Although conscious he would not ride all the big names as many had retained riders, in 2024 Shoemark had three class acts to look forward to in Inspiral, Emily Upjohn and Free Wind. But all three were past their sell by dates.
In the Group 1 Lockinge, Shoemark was on Inspiral for Cheveley Park Stud. She lost. Stable and owner companion Audience won.
Cheveley Park clearly blamed Shoemark as they hardly used him again. Oddly, that changed just last week when he gave Siren Suit a beauty at Ascot.
Shoemark also lost the ride on Emily Upjohn.
All three horses failed to win for anyone, including Dettori and Ryan Moore. Dettori had an absolute shocker on Emily Upjohn in the Breeders' Cup.
Once the old school had been cleared out, Shoemark excelled with the new kids on the block, namely Lead Artist and Friendly Soul, who landed a Group 1 on Arc weekend.
This term the good work continued. He trades at 30% wins to rides for the Gosden team. That's class. Dettori mixed it at 33% in 2023.
Lead Artist ran a belter when second to a track specialist in Bahrain, Zanzoun scooted home in the Group 3 Nell Gwyn, Field Of Gold was superb in the Group 3 Craven.
After that success, Gosden praised Shoemark for taking a route away from the rail. The following week, he gave Sardinian Warrior a cracker in the Listed Queen Anne Trial at Ascot and only last week Shaha was excellent in a Listed contest at Goodwood.
Then came Field Of Gold and his defeat at Newmarket in the 2000 Guineas. And all hell broke loose.
Shoemark rode Field Of Gold for a turn of foot which he had shown in the Craven on easy ground off a strong pace. In the 2000 Guineas off a steady gallop, he took too long to get going. It happens.
This weekend Shoemark was set to partner Detain and Zanzoun in Classics in France. Instead, the Gosdens are using what they call the best available.
But it's hard to believe there is anyone better for those two horses than Shoemark. He's ridden them six times and won five races. It's a funny old game.
A week in racing is quite simply a very, very long time.

Hale 'needs to be playing at highest possible level' for international hopes

Ronan Hale hopes he did enough on his Northern Ireland debut to stay in the squad for the World Cup qualifying campaign but knows his club situation will be key to his striker has two years left on his Ross County contract, but has been subject to transfer speculation since the Staggies relegation to the netted 18 goals in 42 games for Don Cowie's side and was handed his first Northern Ireland cap in Tuesday's 1-0 friendly win over 26-year-old came close to extending his side's lead against the team who defeated Scotland 3-1 at Hampden on was denied by the crossbar, with goalscorer Isaac Price sending over his attempt at a second goal on the rebound, while the County player also fired a low drive just wide before being replaced after 68 minutes."The first chance, I think I hit it too well," Hale said. "Obviously if you trickle it in it might go under the keeper or whatever. Then the second one, I've just tried to take it around him and the touch isn't there."I would be annoyed at myself if I wasn't in for those chances. It's one that I can build on and hopefully take into the group stage."Hale has been in both of Michael O'Neill's squads this year but has had to remain patient waiting for his chance to impress. The major question mark remaining in O'Neill's squad ahead of the qualifiers is who starts as the central striker."I've done what I can but then again it's all down to club level as well," the 26-year-old said. 'Is it time to hear from Owls chairman?'

Another week has passed and there's still no resolution to the situation involving unpaid wages at Sheffield Wednesday. Player and staff salaries were due in full on 30 May. The players are subtly making their thoughts known. On Tuesday, Marvin Johnson posted a GIF of Mr Bean looking at his watch, days after Di'Shon Bernard used a famous Jose Mourinho meme to make a point on social media. There are probably many people at Hillsborough, especially non-footballing staff, who would love to say what's on their mind but can' worst thing about all of this is the total lack of clarity. The unknown. Not having your full wages paid on time is bad enough. Having no idea if or when you'll receive them can be devastating. Mortgages, rent, food bills. This goes beyond anything you typically cover in football. This is a far more serious club released a 59-word statement on 3 June, including an apology by chairman Dejphon Chansiri. There's been no public comment what's going on? Is there any money left to keep this club going? When will people be paid? What happens when June wages are due or the latest tax bill? Does the club face any further sanctions on top of a three transfer window fee-paying ban?Is the chairman actively trying to sell the club? What is he actually doing at the moment? Is administration a possibility?Even if a financial solution is forthcoming — and let's be right, at the moment there's very little to indicate that's the case other than a potential sale of youngster Caelan-Kole Cadamarteri to Manchester City to act as a temporary stop-gap solution — what has this whole episode done for morale both within the club and on the playing side of things? How badly has this impacted the reputation of Sheffield Wednesday within the game?We have requested to speak with Chansiri but he hasn't done a broadcast interview with the BBC since 4 November 2020. With so many questions unanswered (way more than discussed in this short piece) is it time for that to change? Do the players, staff and supporters need to hear from the man running this club?
