Supermarket brand set to open new store at foot of Mourne Mountains

Paralympic Gold Medalist Bethany Firth will cut the ribbon at the grand opening on Thursday, June 19 to welcome new and existing customers to the new concept store.
The new unit at Shan Slieve Drive and Bryansford Road at the foot of the hills will see the existing store at Railway Street in Newcastle town centre relocate after almost 25 years.
Occupying a site of 12,236 square metres, with sales floor space of 1,338 square metres, the site will also provide the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team the space it needs to develop a new facility.
Commenting on the first store opening in the region since taking up his new role as Regional Managing Director for Lidl Northern Ireland Gordon Cruikshanks said: "We have been serving the Newcastle community for the last 25 years from our former premises in Railway Street and our project to develop this brand-new store for the local area has been in planning for the last nine years.
"Newcastle is a thriving community and bustling seaside town attracting visitors from across the island of Ireland. With growing customer numbers in the area and more shoppers choosing to 'Go Full Lidl', we had long outgrown our original store so it's fantastic to now confirm a June opening for the new store.
'Shoppers will be able to enjoy a fully modern, expansive and spacious store, built with sustainability and longevity at the fore, with a few customisations making this a unique store in our portfolio.
'Beyond providing shoppers with the best customer experience in the town, we're looking forward to completing construction of the site to enable the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team to construct an upgraded new base for their services which are invaluable in this community.'
The new Lidl store will incorporate energy efficient features, including LED lighting, heat pumps and PV solar panels, thereby reducing carbon emissions.
Unique for the site is the retailer's first store with a 'living roof' - designed to 'blend seamlessly' with the store's backdrop set within the Mourne Mountains Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).
Parking for 147 vehicles as well as two electric vehicle charging points also feature in the build.
The £6.3m investment will see 15 new jobs added, bringing the total team employed at Lidl's Newcastle store to 37.
The project also saw over 200 jobs created as part of the planning and construction process.
The Newcastle store is the latest investment by Lidl Northern Ireland in the region, complementing new store opening in recent years in Boucher Road, Stewartstown, Carryduff and Coleraine.

Why do Aldi and Lidl have such fast checkouts IF you've ever shopped in Aldi or Lidl then you'll probably have experienced its ultra-fast checkout staff. Aldi's speedy reputation is no mistake, in fact, the supermarket claims that its tills are 40 per cent quicker than rivals. It's all part of Aldi's plan to be as efficient as possible - and this, the budget shop claims, helps keep costs low for shoppers. Efficient barcodes on packaging means staff are able to scan items as quickly as possible, with the majority of products having multiple barcodes to speed up the process. It also uses 'shelf-ready' packaging which keeps costs low when it comes to replenishing stock.

Sainsbury's is trialling electronic shelf-edge labels in select larger stores across the UK The digital tags allow real-time price updates and could pave the way for dynamic pricing Items like alcohol and health products are among the first to feature the new labels The move follows similar trials by Asda, Waitrose, Morrisons, Lidl, and the Co-op Supporters say the system improves efficiency, reduces paper waste, and boosts transparency A major UK supermarket may be quietly ringing in the end of paper price tags, as it joins a growing list of retailers trialling electronic shelf-edge labels - a change that could pave the way for real-time, Uber-style pricing. Sainsbury's has rolled out the digital price tags in select larger stores as part of a limited trial. The new labels have appeared on items like beers, wines, spirits, and health products. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Powered by a wireless network, the technology allows prices to be updated remotely at the click of a button - replacing the age-old manual process of swapping out paper tickets. (Photo:) | Getty Images Is dynamic pricing coming? The small digital displays show product prices and information, and unlike static paper tags, they're linked to a central database and can be updated wirelessly - instantly and accurately. This marks more than just a convenience for staff. The system opens the door to dynamic pricing, where costs could rise or fall in real time based on demand - similar to how ride-hailing apps operate during peak hours. Sainsbury's has partnered with specialist firm Harrison Retail to create new shelf fixings designed to house the sleek displays. A spokesperson confirmed the trial to The Grocer, adding there was "nothing further" to share at this stage. The Co-op is leading the charge, announcing plans to roll out digital labels across its entire network of 2,400 stores by the end of 2026. Its head of operations, Steven Logue, highlighted the environmental and operational benefits: "The electronic labels have the potential to enhance product information and transparency, avoid paper waste, and make online order picking easier.' Lidl has echoed the eco-friendly promise, estimating a potential saving of 206 tonnes of carbon annually by reducing paper, packaging, and ink use. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad
