Which is the best new child-meets-alien movie? We give Elio the edge

Child meets alien: it's a tale as old as time, or at least a formula that goes back to E.T. Still, given that Disney and Pixar are two branches of the same company, there's something disconcerting about Pixar releasing Elio just a few weeks after Disney brought us the live-action version of Lilo & Stitch.
Both films centre on a rambunctious young orphan who has trouble making human friends, but does better when extra-terrestrials are involved – and both incorporate the expected heart-tugging moments and moral lessons, along with parodies of science-fiction cliches.
So which one should you or your children see? It's a matter of individual preference, but personally I'd have to give Elio the edge.
Lilo & Stitch is mostly old-fashioned slapstick, though not lacking in charm. Elio is more ambitious, and also a whole lot weirder – which is a plus, though questions might be raised about the advisability of showing a child lying on a beach next to a message scrawled in the sand that reads 'ABDUCT ME,' granting he's spelled out he wants to be abducted by aliens, not just anyone.
At any rate, it isn't long before young Elio (Yonas Kibreab) gets his wish. Light years away from planet Earth, he seems to have found his chosen family in a non-violent, technologically advanced collective of aliens known as the Communiverse, who accept and appreciate him as his well-meaning aunt back home (Zoe Saldana) never could.
Naturally, there are complications. It's not that the members of the Communiverse are hiding anything sinister, but they've jumped to the false conclusion that Elio is Earth's leader.
Rather than confess the humiliating truth, he volunteers for a dangerous diplomatic mission involving the monstrous Lord Grigon (Brad Garrett) – whose young son Glorgan (Remy Edgerly) proves to be even more of a misfit than Elio, with no true desire to move on from his larval form or join the family business of galactic conquest.

Corey Mylchreest's disastrous Tangled audition
Corey Mylchreest had a disastrous audition for the role of Flynn Rider in Tangled. The My Oxford Year actor was up for the role of Rapunzel's love interest in the live-action remake of the 2010 cartoon but admitted he was let down by his singing ability. Corey, 25, told Seventeen magazine: "I think I can say this now because I don't think it's happening anymore, but I auditioned for Tangled. "We don't have the footage anymore. I deleted it and then I burnt it and then I burnt the phone that I filmed on. And then I burnt the room that I did it in. And then I burnt myself. They then told me that they wanted someone with singing experience." The project – which was in the pre-production stage with The Greatest Showman's Michael Gracey set to direct - was reportedly paused indefinitely earlier this year after Snow White's poor performance at the box office. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Disney is now reevaluating the strategy for other live-action adaptations in development. Previously, both Ben Barnes, 43, and Zachary Levi, 44, revealed their desire to take on the role of Flynn in the movie. Ben took to X in 2020 to respond to a fan who had tweeted a picture of him and the character from Tangled and admitted he'd jump at the chance to take on the role. He wrote: "I am so up for this @ down to the little chin beard! #Tangled." And, Zachary – who voiced the character of Flynn in the animated movie - said he would love to reprise the role but admitted he might not be the right fit. He said: "As much as I would love to play Flynn Rider in a live-action Tangled, by the time they get around to that, I don't think I'm gonna be the right guy to play that role. "I'll be there coaching that guy, I'll make sure he understands what that smoulder means, but I think my hair will be like Steve Martin-white by the time they do a live-action Tangled.' He then teased: "In lieu of playing Flynn Rider in a live-action Tangled, I would say, I don't know... Ariel from The Little Mermaid maybe."

Jamie Lee Curtis has gone viral on TikTok thanks to a presumably well intended video posted on Disney's official account. The Hollywood veteran could be seen promoting her new movie Freakier Friday in a personal message to fans, but another detail became the hot conversation point in the comment section. Curtis, 66, wore a low-cut denim top in the clip, with many young TikTok users gobsmacked to see a more sexy side to the typically more conservatively dressed star. 'Woah hey jamie,' one said. 'Where did those come from,' another wrote. 'Why would Disney post that,' a third questioned. 'I was not familiar with your game before Jamie Lee Curtis,' a fourth said. 'From the official Disney account is just unprecedented,' a fifth joked. Others, however, pointed out Curtis has long been a screen siren, specifically pointing to her 'hotel scene' in 1994's True Lies, where she showed off her stunning figure while dancing in underwear. Overseas, it made $US15.5 million for a global taking of $US44.5 million, with that figure continuing to climb as it enters its full cinema run. Reviews have also been generally positive for the movie, with a 93 per cent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Curtis, meanwhile, hit out at a negative review shared by TIME on Instagram this week. Part of the story read, 'No one, as far as we know, actually asked Disney for a sequel to 2003's buoyant, surprisingly unsyrupy generation-gap comedy 'Freaky Friday.''
