Man Utd to sign Bryan Mbeumo after finally reaching Brentford transfer agreement

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Bryan Mbeumo's £71m move to Manchester United has moved a step closer after Brentford agreed to sanction the sale of their top goalscorer.
United had failed with two earlier bids for Mbeumo, 25, only for a third offer to be deemed acceptable by Bees chiefs. That will see Brentford receive £65m guaranteed, paid across four instalments, with £6m more to come in add-ons.
Mbeumo's representatives had already agreed personal terms with the Old Trafford hierarchy, paving the way for a move to be completed in the next couple of days pending the completion of a medical.
The Cameroon international had also had interest from Tottenham Hotspur, a move that would have seen him follow the path taken by head coach Thomas Frank last month.
But he has always preferred a move to United, despite the club not being in Europe this season and Spurs returning to the Champions League, and made his intention clear to all parties while continuing to train as normal at the start of pre-season.
United's initial bids of £45m and £55m upfront were swiftly rejected by Brentford, whose view was that they should hold out for more than what United paid Wolves for the Brazilian Matheus Cunha at the beginning of the transfer window. United have also signed young full back Diego Leon from the Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno.
Mbeumo scored 20 goals and added eight assists having played in every league game for Brentford last season. He joined the club in 2019 and was a vital part of their promotion from the Championship.

Six Rangers stars give Russell Martin a serious headache but there's one thing he can't sacrifice for Panathinaikos

There are seven new boys for the Rangers gaffer to pick from ahead of the clash with Panathinaikos Neil Murray reckons Russell Martin will be wrestling with a massive selection dilemma ahead of his Euro bow as boss. ‌ Martin has signed six stars in a flurry of business in less than four weeks. ‌ Throw in pre-contract capture Lyall Cameron and there are seven new boys for the Rangers gaffer to pick from ahead of the clash with Panathinaikos. ‌ Murray, a veteran of several nerve-shredding Champions League qualifiers in the 90s, says there must be temptation to stick with experience. Gers still boast core players who have made the Europa League quarter-finals and round of 16 in the last two seasons. But Martin has his own guys Max Aarons, Nasser Djiga, Thelo Aasgaard, Manny Fernandez, Djeidi Gassama and Joe Rothwell in his 25-man Euro squad. ‌ Murray said: 'Does he go with a nucleus from last season with a sprinkling of the new ones? Or does he go wholesale and put in all the new boys that he wanted? 'There are players who understand what it means to win in Europe for Rangers in recent years. It makes sense to have that useful experience. If the majority have played together, that can count for something. 'From what I can gather, Panathinaikos will have a settled team to play these games. Sometimes that can be a strength. It's about finding the best formula because there will be new players who give the Gers group a boost. ‌ 'Martin will hopefully have a good idea of his best XI. Team selection will be key over two legs and there are big calls to be made. 'In a wider sense for the season ahead, this Rangers squad is massive. There are plenty of players to choose from which can generate its own problems.' Brian Laudrup was the only new boy in the team when Murray endured a Greek tragedy in 1994. Walter Smith's side were sunk 2-0 away by AEK Athens in the first leg. And the Greeks grabbed a 1-0 win at Ibrox to condemn Gers to a second successive season of failure to make the groups. ‌ The Great Dane was starved of service recalls Murray, who said: 'Laudrup strengthened the team no end in his time at the club. He added: 'His ability was outstanding but if we didn't have possession to feed him in dangerous areas, what he could do on his own was limited. ‌ 'We didn't give Laudrup the ammo. It was a difficult draw. AEK had quality throughout and it was all a bit too much for us. 'The strange thing was we played 3-5-2 having been 4-4-2 for years. We beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Ibrox Tournament the weekend before playing a back three. 'The idea was we could do it against AEK. But it was a risk to change how we'd played for a long time.' AEK coasted the Ibrox leg after scoring in the first half as European Cup winner Basile Boli's Euro debut for Gers fell flat. Murray said: 'It was Champions League or nothing back then – you didn't live to fight another day in a new competition. 'The qualifiers were a tightrope and going out was disappointing for the club financially and for the players.'

Ruben Amorim drops hint on next Man Utd transfer target in honest post-match message

Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Bryan Mbeumo but plenty more transfer activity is expected at Old Trafford following their poor 2024-25 campaign Ruben Amorim singled out Manchester United 's midfield as a potential area of concern after the Red Devils played out an uneventful 0-0 draw with Leeds in Stockholm on Saturday. ‌ United jet off on their pre-season tour of the United States on Tuesday but kicked off their pre-season campaign with a match against their bitter rivals at the Strawberry Arena. There was little to savour, though, as both sides laboured to a goalless draw. ‌ Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon, United's only summer signings, both played in the first half and caught the eye. ‌ But with United in need of more quality additions before the new Premier League campaign kicks off next month, Amorim gave an honest assessment post-match where he pointed out the 'lack of pace' in United's engine room. He said: "It was a pre-season game. The gaps between our sectors was sometimes too big. "We have a lack of pace, especially in the middle of the park and you can feel it is hard to win and bring the ball. But we created chances." ‌ Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes played together in midfield during the first half with Cunha and Toby Collyer ahead of them in the dual No 10 roles, though Collyer and Amad switched roles later in the half. Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte was United's midfield pairing for the second period. United are expected to target a new No 9 now that they have finally agreed terms with Brentford for the transfer of Bryan Mbeumo, who is expected to undergo a medical and finalise his move over the weekend. ‌ But Amorim's comments could be a hint that United will now focus on adding to their midfield options after focusing on their attack. In Cunha and Mbeumo, United have secured two of the Premier League's top forwards from last season and Amorim was pleased with what he saw from Cunha in his first appearance for the club. ‌ He said: "I think Matheus Cunha showed what we need. That he is a player when he receives the ball between the lines can be really aggressive in the direction of the opponents. "We watched that during last season in a different team so we expect the same thing. Of course you can see the connection between him and Bruno is still not there but it's going to be a good connection." Marcus Rashford in talks with Barcelona after Manchester United agree loan

Marcus Rashford is closing in on a move to Barcelona after Manchester United agreed in principle to loan the striker to the Spanish champions. Barcelona's offer, which has been made through intermediaries, includes an option to buy the 27-year-old next summer and has been sanctioned by their head coach, Hansi Flick. Rashford has held talks with Flick while his brother and representative, Dwaine Maynard, met Barcelona officials in Catalonia last month. The England international is one of five United players who have been told they have no future at the club and made to train away from Ruben Amorim's squad this summer. Rashford, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, has been training at a gym in Salford and at United's Carrington base, although only after first-team players have left. United value Rashford at £40m but, with no permanent offers arriving for a player who has three years remaining on a £325,000-a-week contract, Barcelona's offer could suit all parties. The striker has ruled out a wage cut and wants to join a club in the Champions League rather than move to the Saudi Pro League. Talks between United and Barcelona are understood to be continuing but the outline of an agreement is in place. Flick wants to add versatile forwards to his squad this summer despite having Lamine Yamal and Raphinha at his disposal. Barcelona were interested in the Liverpool winger Luis Díaz but were informed the Colombia international is not for sale. Liverpool have rejected a €67.5m offer from Bayern Munich for Díaz. The Spanish champions also attempted to buy Nico Williams before the forward signed an eight-year contract extension with Athletic, his boyhood club in Bilbao. Rashford has spent 20 years at United, scoring 138 goals in 426 appearances for his boyhood team, but has not featured since being dropped by Amorim for the Manchester derby last December. He said later that month that he was ready for a new challenge away from Old Trafford. Amorim's team drew 0-0 with Leeds in their first pre-season friendly in Stockholm on Saturday. Kick off at the Strawberry Arena was delayed by 10 minutes because of heavy traffic outside the stadium. Matheus Cunha made his United debut following his £62.5m arrival from Wolves and played the opening 45 minutes before Amorim made 11 changes at the interval. Sign up to Football Daily Kick off your evenings with the Guardian's take on the world of football after newsletter promotion Amorim says Cunha showed what United have been missing. 'I think Matheus Cunha showed what we need - that is the player when he receives the ball between the lines can be really aggressive in direction of the opponent. We watched that during last season in a different team, so we expect the same thing. Of course, you can see that the connection between him and Bruno [Fernandes] is still not there, but it's going to be a good connection.' United head to the United States next week for the Premier League Summer Series against West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton and hope to include Bryan Mbeumo in their travelling party. Old Trafford officials agreed a deal that could rise to £71m on Friday for the Brentford forward, who underwent his United medical on Saturday. After the game in Stockholm, Daniel Farke confirmed that he had told Patrick Bamford that the striker was not going to be involved in Leeds' Premier League campaign, because of his fitness problems over the past couple of years. The Leeds manager said: 'Patrick knows how much I value him as a player, I have spoken several times about this, and that I would have preferred a completely fit Patrick Bamford, in the last two seasons. He also knows how much I rate him as a person, but I thought it was my duty to have a very open and honest conversation with him right now, straight away with him. 'The second day of pre-season I got him into my office and told him that he was not in my plans for the upcoming Premier League season, just in the fact that he had really difficult years in the last years.'
