NFL quarterback's 2025 season in doubt as new concerns emerge over recurring injury
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson is not at the team's mandatory minicamp due to an injury to his throwing shoulder.
It's the same shoulder that Richardson hurt in his rookie NFL campaign that ended his season in Week 5.
Considering this is a re-injury, Sports Illustrated 's Albert Breer says the Colts are taking extra precautions with Richardson as the third-year gunslinger out of Florida weighs his options.
'It was the second day of OTAs that they shut him down, he's gonna go visit with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, I believe that's gonna happen this week, to go and get it checked out,' Breer told The Rich Eisen Show, adding that ElAttrache 'was the one who did the surgery initially.'
'When you're talking about the soreness coming back in the shoulder and "no he hasn't had surgery yet, but he's gonna have more opinions on it," it just gets you worried.
'I would say I take both of them very seriously, because anything to do with a quarterback's throwing shoulder, elbow, wrist, whatever is serious.
'But when it's like a repeat thing, that's where it's like "oh boy".'
With Richardson likely to be starting on the bench, Breer says there is a 'really good chance Daniel Jones is gonna be the starting quarterback for the Colts Week 1 and Anthony Richardson faces a lot of uncertainty going forward.'
It's a very concerning development for the longevity of his career - especially considering his first two seasons didn't end particularly well.
After suffering that career-ending injury in his rookie season, his 2024 campaign featured stops and starts.
Richardson began as the starter in the first few weeks before an oblique injury sidelined him in Weeks 5 and 6. Then, in Week 8, he capped off a poor performance against the Houston Texans by voluntarily taking himself out in the third quarter for a play because he 'needed a breather'.
As a result, Richardson was benched for two weeks in favor of Joe Flacco. After Flacco struggled, Richardson returned for the rest of the season.

The Washington Commanders have reportedly offered running back Brian Robinson Jr. around to other NFL teams. Robinson, 26, has three seasons under his belt and has been efficient throughout his NFL career so far. However, the former third-round NFL Draft pick out of Alabama is poised to enter the final year of his contract and the Commanders seemingly feel it's time to cash in, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. Robinson Jr. has rushed for more than 2,329 yards across the last three seasons and scored 20 touchdowns. In the 2024 season, he started 13 of the 14 games he played in and had a career-best eight touchdowns from 187 carries for another career-best 799 yards. His impressive numbers helped the Commanders make it to the NFC Championship Game, in which they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles, as he linked up well with quarterback Jayden Daniels in his own remarkable rookie campaign. The Commanders are said to be happy with their running back depth, which also includes Austin Ekeler, Jeremy McNichols and Chris Rodriguez Jr. It remains to be seen where Robinson Jr. could end up but it does mean the future of another Commanders star is up in the air. The franchise's star wide receiver Terry McLaurin is also disgruntled after protracted contract talks have failed to yield a new deal. The Commanders removed McLaurin from the physically unable to perform list early Saturday. While the two sides have yet to agree to a contract extension, it means McLaurin can return to practice and start preparing for the season. Multiple outlets reported Saturday that there was no sign of movement on a deal. Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury said Friday that time was running short before the season for McLaurin to start getting reps on the field. Head coach Dan Quinn said there is a plan for McLaurin. 'We've got a real process in our return-to-play that we believe in. We know it works. So we'll hit all those steps,' he said Saturday. The Commanders open the season at home on September 7 against the New York Giants, their NFC East rival.
