Chandigarh: In a move aimed at simplifying parking and boosting revenue without spending a rupee, the Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC) has fast-tracked a proposal to roll out monthly parking pass system for all paid parking lots across the city.
The plan? Rs 500 for four-wheelers and Rs 250 for two-wheelers — one pass, unlimited access.
To make this happen, the MC plans to partner with a bank that will handle the tech side of things — from payment gateways to app development — ensuring a smooth, tamper-proof system. Senior MC officials, including the municipal commissioner and representatives from the parking and engineering wings, recently met with bank officials to fine-tune the proposal.
The plan includes issuing stickers to pass holders, allowing them to enter parking lots without the hassle of collecting slips. Non-pass users will continue with the traditional ticketing system. The initiative is expected to be discussed and approved in the upcoming General House meeting later this month before being rolled out citywide.
A senior MC official said, "We're offering a citywide pass at a very reasonable rate.

A survey is already underway, and about 70% of respondents have shown interest. We're optimistic about the response."
The passes will be available both online and at e-Sampark centres for public convenience. The selected bank will also develop a mobile app to streamline the process and prevent misuse.
The Numbers Behind the Move
According to MC estimates, around 5 lakh four-wheelers and 1 lakh two-wheelers use paid parking lots in Chandigarh every month. Even if just 50,000 commuters opt for the new pass, the MC could generate Rs 30 crore annually — a significant jump from the current monthly profit of Rs 50 lakh.
Currently, the MC sells around 5,000 passes a month, each valid for just one parking lot at ₹420. The new system promises not just convenience for commuters but a major revenue boost for the city — all without additional expenditure.

Yes Bank Q1 net profit jumps 59 pc on non-core income growth

Agency: PTI Mumbai, Jul 19 (PTI) Private sector lender Yes Bank on Saturday reported a 59 per cent jump in its June quarter net profit to Rs 801 crore, helped by non-core income growth. Its core net interest income grew 5.7 per cent to Rs 2,371 crore on the back of a 5 per cent growth in advances and a 0.10 per cent widening in the net interest margin at 2.5 per cent. The other income jumped 46 per cent to Rs 1,752 crore, and was one of the major drivers of the profit growth. Treasury income was one of the key movers on this front; gains of investment were Rs 484 crore against Rs 32 crore losses in the year-ago period. The bank's managing director and chief executive Prashant Kumar said the bank is cautious on the retail credit growth, where it does not wish to grow products offering it thin margins. Kumar exuded confidence that the advances growth will accelerate in the rest of the year, and added that the bank is maintaining its loan growth target. The gross slippages inched up to Rs 1,458 crore from Rs 1,223 crore in the quarter-ago period, and Kumar said there were two business accounts in the April-June period which are set to turn performing soon. Kumar said he expects the 20 per cent stake buy by Japan's Sumitomo Mitsui Corporation Bank (SMBC) to be complete by September-end, but did not confirm if an application has been given by them to acquire another 5 per cent. When asked about his own tenure at the bank and if he sees a role beyond the six-month extension granted by the RBI, Kumar declined to comment. view comments First Published: July 19, 2025, 20:30 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. ED not a ‘loitering munition' or ‘super cop': Madras HC

Madras high court CHENNAI: Enforcement Directorate is not a 'loitering munition or drone' that can strike at will, nor a 'super cop' empowered to investigate every matter that comes to its notice, Madras HC has observed while quashing a Rs 901-crore fixed deposit freeze order issued by the agency. A division bench of Justices MS Ramesh and V Lakshminarayanan ruled that ED's powers under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) can only be invoked when there is a scheduled offence — termed a 'predicate offence' — and the existence of proceeds of crime arising from it. 'PMLA demands the existence of a predicate offence. When there is no predicate offence, initiation of proceedings under PMLA is anonstarter,' the bench said. It likened ED's jurisdiction to a limpet mine requiring a ship to function. 'The ship is the predicate offence and proceeds of crime,' it added. The ruling came in response to a plea by RKM Powergen Pvt Ltd, which challenged ED's January 31 order freezing its fixed deposits. The company, represented by senior advocate B Kumar, said the freeze disregarded earlier court rulings and lacked fresh material. RKMP was allocated the Fatehpur East coal block in 2006. The Supreme Court cancelled the allocation in 2014. CBI initially registered an FIR but closed the case in 2017. Despite this, ED launched a PMLA probe in 2015 and froze RKMP's accounts, which was struck down by Madras HC earlier. Rejecting ED's stand, HC said actions under PMLA must follow legally prescribed route and termed the freeze order 'legally untenable.'
