Alabama higher in USA TODAY Sports preseason college football rankings than top 25 polls
One national outlet is slightly higher on the Alabama Crimson Tide entering the 2025 college football season than the coaches who make up the US LBM Coaches Poll and the various sportswriters and broadcasters who make up the AP Top 25 poll. Alabama was ranked No. 8 in both the preseason Coaches Poll on Aug. 4, as well as the AP Top 25 poll released on Aug. 11. Among SEC teams, Alabama placed third behind the top-ranked Texas Longhorns and the Georgia Bulldogs. Kirby Smart's team was No. 4 in the Coaches Poll and No. 6 in the AP poll. On Monday, USA TODAY Sports unveiled its own preseason rankings (re-rank) of all 136 FBS programs ahead of 2025. Alabama checked at No. 7 in longtime college football analyst Paul Myerberg's hierarchy of teams, one spot higher than its ranking in the preseason top 25 polls. While Texas and Georgia were both still ahead of the Crimson Tide in USA TODAY Sports' rankings entering coach Kalen DeBoer's second season in Tuscaloosa, Alabama placed ahead of one team that landed ahead of them in the preseason polls: the Oregon Ducks. The LSU Tigers, who Alabama edged by one spot in the preseason polls, were still the next highest-ranked SEC team, though they were a few spots lower in USA TODAY Sports' full rankings of all 136 FBS teams entering 2025. Sawyer Robertson and Baylor hope to build off 2024 finish that removed dismal feel around Dave Aranda's team
The feeling surrounding coach Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears was getting downright dismal midway through last season. A six-game winning streak certainly changed the mood, and expectations, especially for quarterback Sawyer Robertson and other players who went through that extended slide. 'A lot of the guys that are here right now, and that had roles in last year's successful season, were also on that 3-9 team (in 2023) when nobody liked us,' Robertson said. 'So just keeping that chip on our shoulder is the main thing, and building off of how we ended last season.' Some now even consider Baylor, 8-5 last season after a bowl loss to LSU, a dark-horse contender for another Big 12 title. Before winning its final six regular-season games last year, Baylor was in a 5-17 tailspin that went back to a four-game losing streak at the end of 2022. That was just a season after being Big 12 champions, winning the Sugar Bowl and ranking fifth in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll in Aranda's second year. 'It's good to have the momentum, but we've got to realize it's a new season, new team,' fifth-year receiver Josh Cameron said. 'There's always going to be different dynamics.' Runners and catchers Baylor has the only 1,000-yard rusher returning in the Big 12 from last season, and has back its top two receivers. Bryson Washington ran for 1,029 yards and 12 touchdowns last season, and caught 22 passes. Along with Dawson Pendergrass (671 yards, six TDs), that gives Baylor one of the league's top running back duos. Cameron, a former walk-on, had 52 catches for 754 yards and 10 TDs last year. He was also the FBS leader averaging 20.7 yards on punt returns. 'Just kind of treat myself and carry myself as like, 'Man, I'm a walk-on.' So I'm still trying to fight for that spot. I'm still trying to fight for what's mine,' he said. 'That's like the main thing that's really keeps me going.' The Bears got a big boost when the NCAA cleared former Texas State transfer Ashtyn Hawkins (45 catches, 567 yards, five TDs) for another season with Baylor. Sawyer's journey Robertson spent two seasons at Mississippi State before transferring to Baylor, where he made four starts as a sophomore before taking over full-time in the third game last season. Even while hampered by a lower-body injury the second half of last season, he threw for 3,071 yards and 28 touchdowns with only eight interceptions. He added 230 yards and four TDs on the ground. Defensive focus While Jake Spavital goes into his second season as offensive coordinator, Aranda again will primarily focus on defense; he took the Baylor job after being the defensive coordinator for LSU's national title in 2019. The Bears ranked in the bottom half of the Big 12 last season in pretty much every defensive category. They allowed more than 30 points and 433 yards in conference games. 'I'm sure there is,' Aranda said when asked if there is pressure on the defense to take another step. 'When you win, you want to feel like you contributed to the win. So I think that kind of sums up that side of the ball.' Protecting up front Baylor returns four starters on the offensive line, a group with a lot of quality depth after that. 'It's the most depth of any team I've been a part of. ... There's dudes right behind them that are pushing them, trying to take that job,' Aranda said. 'I think their aggressiveness and their ability to communicate are the two things that separate them.' Power start Baylor will open the season against a team from another power conference for the first time since going to Wake Forest in 2009. The Bears host Auburn in a night opener Aug. 29, and a week later play at 16th-ranked team SMU, a playoff team last season in its first as an ACC member. Two of Baylor's first three Big 12 games are against defending champion No. 11 Arizona State and No. 17 Kansas State, though both are at home.

Is Hamilton Calling the Shots at Ferrari? Leclerc Breaks Silence
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Scuderia Ferrari Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton has taken significant steps to improve his team's performance through crucial technical advice and feedback. However, this raised the question of whether the seven-time world champion is being heard more than his teammate, Charles Leclerc, at Ferrari. Being a multi-time world champion, Hamilton is aware of the ingredients that go into a team to develop a championship-winning car. He has been struggling with the team's current SF-25 F1 car, since it wasn't developed with his input. To make a difference, he has been preparing documents for Ferrari and its top management on his driving preferences and also on the direction of development Ferrari should adopt for the 2026 car. In addition, the Briton has been having meetings with the bosses at Ferrari and his engineers to structure the team for more efficiency. Now though, the Monegasque driver has opened up on the topic and cleared the air on whether Hamilton has been carrying more technical influence in the team. He said: Lewis Hamilton of Great Britain and Ferrari and Charles Leclerc of Monaco and Ferrari walk in the paddock during practice/Sprint qualifying ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of China at Shanghai International Circuit on March... Lewis Hamilton of Great Britain and Ferrari and Charles Leclerc of Monaco and Ferrari walk in the paddock during practice/Sprint qualifying ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of China at Shanghai International Circuit on March 21, 2025 in Shanghai, China. More"At the end of the day we are both pushing to try and make Ferrari better. He's preparing his points, I'm preparing my points and then we are doing big meetings where we are both inside the meetings, and then we speak about those points that we want to improve. "So, of course, we are aligned with everything together with the team, and everybody is pushing in the same direction so that there's no stress whatsoever." Acknowledging the experience Hamilton comes with, Leclerc admitted that the 40-year-old driver's input was being looked at seriously since his first Ferrari race in Australia. He added: "Obviously it's a unique point of view and Lewis had an incredible career, so these are things that we are looking closely. But it didn't only start now. "It starts from the first race where you have the first points where things are different and you've got to get used to and other things that you want to change and this is part of the process. "I don't think there's anything standing out now. Maybe it's the first time he said it, so that's why it makes such a reaction, but it's nothing particular to this moment."
