California homeless man wins $1 million on lottery scratcher: report
After living through the toughest times, a California man's life changed in an instant.
Earlier this month, the California Lottery said a customer at Sandy's Liquor in San Luis Obispo became an instant millionaire after winning on a scratcher. Now, according to the Los Angeles Times, it's come out that the winner is a homeless man.
That news comes from the owner of Sandy's Liquor, Wilson Samaan, who told The Times that the winner was a longtime customer and that he 'deserves every penny.'
'I was so excited — even more than him,' Samaan said, via The Times. 'He's a good person, he deserves every penny … I was very excited it happened to a person who deserved it, and he actually needed it.'
Mega Millions tickets are getting more expensive
The winner, who chose to remain anonymous for the story, plans to buy a house and a car with his million dollars.
Samaan eagerly shared the lottery win on the Sandy's Liquor Instagram page. As the vendor, the store will receive $5,000 from the California Lottery.
The winner and Samaan have a close friendship, according to The Times. Samaan drove him to the California Lottery office in Fresno after scratching off the winning ticket.
The win is still being verified by the California Lottery.

Mass. attorney general cites rehab company for $1.1M for unpaid wages to nearly 500 workers
The Massachusetts Attorney General's Office has cited a nursing rehabilitation company with multiple locations across the state for failing to pay hundreds of its employees on time for work completed during a two-week period last year, the office announced Tuesday. The citation against Swansea-based Alpha Healthcare and its owner, William Segal, includes both penalties and wages, and totals nearly $1.1 million, the attorney general's office said in a press release. Alpha Healthcare did not respond to a request for comment from MassLive Tuesday evening. Massachusetts' wage and hour laws require that employers compensate employees for their work within six days of the end of a pay period. State worker protections also demand that this compensation include full and complete payment for all work that was completed during that pay period. The attorney general's office began investigating Alpha Healthcare after receiving complaints from multiple employees reporting that the company had not paid their wages on time, the office said. It determined that Alpha Healthcare failed to pay its workers for work performed between Sept. 15, 2024, and Sept. 28, 2024, in a manner that complied with state wage and hour laws. The attorney general's office asserts that the company's failure to make timely wage payments impacted all of its nearly 500 employees across each of its five private rehabilitation facilities, the office said. Alpha Healthcare operates locations in Fall River, Franklin, Newburyport, Swansea and Stoughton. Restitution for the company's unpaid wages was paid directly to the impacted employees when a receiver was appointed to oversee financial management of Alpha Healthcare, the attorney general's office said. 'When employers violate our laws, including by failing to make timely wage payments, the economic security of workers and their families is unfairly put at risk,' Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell said in the release. 'My office will continue to enforce our laws to protect and empower workers, reminding employers that Massachusetts is serious about protecting workers' rights.' Elon Musk rages against Steve Bannon after call for drug investigation
Elon Musk's feud with Steve Bannon intensified Tuesday after Bannon suggested President Donald Trump rethink government contracts with Musk's company and appoint a special counsel to investigate the mercurial billionaire's alleged drug use. 'Bannon is such a r——d liar,' Musk raged on his social media platform in the very early morning hours, using a slur for people with intellectual disabilities. 'Dumber than a doorstop.' Musk was replying to comments Bannon made on the debut episode of the 'Sunday Night With Chuck Todd' streaming series. The clip that appeared to get under his skin showed Bannon suggesting Musk has government contracts to thank for adding as much as $150 billion to his net worth and suggested, therefore, U.S. taxpayers should own a share of his SpaceX company. Musk's rant took issue with Bannon's math, but moreso his reasoning. 'If Bannon's dumb as f–k reasoning made any sense, then anyone who bought products from any company would automatically own that company,' he posted before again insulting Bannon's mental capacity. According to Bannon, if any other CEO threatened to decommission one of the rockets his company uses in its work with the government after a personal spat with a U.S. president — as Musk did last week — that executive would be fired. Bannon also told Todd that President Trump should further look into a recent bombshell New York Times story hinting Musk's alleged drug use could be problematic, which Musk flatly denied. 'I think the best way to do it is as a special counsel that can kind of oversee everything,' Bannon said. 'Pull his security clearance for the drugs, temporarily, investigate the whole drug situation.' The Times reported May 30 that Musk was 'using drugs far more intensely than previously known' while campaigning for Trump. His substance use reportedly included ketamine, ecstasy, psychedelic mushrooms and pills that appeared to be the ADHD stimulant Adderall. Bannon, who served in Trump's first administration, has a history of butting heads with Musk, who headed the Department of Government Efficiency in Trump's second administration. Tensions escalated last week when Musk posted a message online suggesting Justice Department records show that Trump's friendship with disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein would present problems for the president.
