'Overwhelming verdict': Fans call for Aussie bowler with 295 Test wickets to be axed

Yahoo3 days ago
Josh Hazlewood would be the unlucky player to miss out on Ashes selection as Australia again face the pleasant dilemma over who to leave out of its five-star bowling line-up next summer. That's the overwhelming verdict of the Yahoo Sport Australia audience after Scott Boland and Mitchell Starc destroyed the West Indies in a record-breaking performance in the third Test in Jamaica.
Asked in a poll who should miss out if all five Australian bowlers – Starc, Boland, Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon and Pat Cummins – are available, a whopping 48 per cent of the 32,000 respondents chose Hazlewood. Boland was a somewhat controversial selection over veteran spinner Lyon in Kingston but vindicated the faith shown in him by claiming a second innings hat-trick to go with match figures of 6-36.
Starc raced past 400 scalps in his 100th Test, collecting a five-wicket haul with the fewest balls (15) in history as the home side was routed for a paltry 27. While Australia's batting continues to cause nightmares, selectors have been left with the nice problem of working out how to fit five of the world's best bowlers into four spots for the five-Test series against England, starting in November.
Skipper Cummins and left-armer Starc appear locks for all five matches, pending fitness, while Boland, Hazlewood and Lyon may share the load depending on conditions. It's already been floated Lyon will sit out the day-night Test in Brisbane given Australia's seamers have dominated previous pink-ball games.
But the reality is Australia's finest-ever off-spinner should play in at least four Tests, leaving Boland and Hazlewood in a shootout for the final bowling berth. Boland was surprised to get the call-up in Jamaica at Lyon's expense and is not banking on selectors taking the same gamble in Australia.

Whichever line-up the Aussies go with, former England captain Michael Vaughan believes the Poms' lower order won't be blasted away as in recent Ashes series. After witnessing England's memorable 22-run win over India at Lord's, Vaughan said: "They've got bowlers who can bat. Gus Atkinson has got a Test match century, (Brydon) Carse got a good half-century here, Jofra Archer can hold a bat and (then there's) Mark Wood.
"So often in Australia we've seen England have good days where they're 220 for two or three and suddenly 280 all out because Starc blows away the tail. England should be able to get a few tail-end runs in Australia with the batting line-up that they have."

England ‘optimistic' Leah Williamson will be available for Euros semi-final against Italy

England are very 'optimistic' that captain Leah Williamson will be available for their European Championship semi-final against Italy on Tuesday. Williamson was forced off at half-time of extra-time in their dramatic penalty shootout win over Sweden after rolling her ankle. After the quarter-final win, head coach Sarina Wiegman said Williamson would be assessed on Friday. 'I don't know what it is right now,' she said. 'She couldn't stay on the pitch so we had to take her off.' But fellow centre-back Esme Morgan has assuaged any concerns. 'We're very optimistic that Leah will be available,' said Morgan. 'She seemed in very high spirits this morning.' The Lionesses will be encouraged by renewed confidence in Williamson's fitness. The backline has looked vulnerable and following Jess Carter's shaky performance against Sweden, Wiegman needs some continuity at centre-back. Morgan of Washington Spirit impressed when she replaced Carter in the backline in the 70th minute. Wiegman has to choose if she sticks with Carter and Williamson at centre-back, returns to Williamson and Alex Greenwood or puts in Morgan alongside Williamson and keeps Greenwood at left-back. 'I want what's best for the team, and that's absolutely having our captain on the pitch for us,' said Morgan when asked about potentially starting. 'For me it is the same as every single game — be prepared to play if I'm needed, know the role, just be absolutely ready and train at a high level over the next few days. But we're very optimistic that Leah will be fine.' The Lionesses will play their fifth consecutive major tournament semi-final on Tuesday, the most of any European nation. Sheffield United sign former Everton winger Thomas

Sheffield United have completed the signing of winger Lauren Thomas on a free transfer. WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Blades this morning. The 25-year-old moves to Bramall Lane following the expiry of her contract at former club Everton. Thomas spent last season with The Toffees, making four appearances for the club in all competitions. Thomas made a name for herself in a five-year spell with former Barclays WSL2 club Blackburn Rovers. The winger made 76 appearances for Rovers in all competitions in which she scored four goals. Thomas regularly impressed with her performances for the Lancashire club. After adding Thomas to his squad, Sheffield United boss Ash Thompson said 'Lauren brings a lot of qualities to the attack that we were looking for. She's fast, direct, experienced at this level and has gained experience at the level above last season too. She's joining us at a really good point in her career and I'm looking forward to seeing what she can do with us this season.' Thomas is Sheffield United's seventh signing of the summer transfer window. The South Yorkshire club are expected to announce further arrivals in the coming days.

England very optimistic Leah Williamson will be fit for semi-final

England defender Esme Morgan insisted the Lionesses were 'very optimistic' captain Leah Williamson would be fit to play in Tuesday's Euro 2025 semi-final against Italy after she was forced off in their dramatic last-eight triumph over Sweden. Williamson rolled her ankle and left Thursday's contest in the first period of extra-time – after goals from Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang snatched the Lionesses a late 2-2 draw after 90 minutes – before they booked a last-four spot following a dramatic penalty shootout. Morgan was introduced as part of a 70th-minute triple change and is prepared to play any role for the defending champions in Geneva – including stepping in for the skipper, if necessary. But, she stressed: 'We are very optimistic that Leah will be available. She seemed in very high spirits this morning, and I want what's best for the team and that's absolutely having our captain on the pitch for us. 'The same as every single game, I'm going to be prepared to play if I'm needed. I'll know the role and just be absolutely ready to train at at high level over the next few days, but we're very optimistic Leah will be fine.' England boss Sarina Wiegman revealed after the Sweden victory that Williamson would be assessed on Friday, though no further updates were yet provided on the captain's status ahead of what will be England's sixth-consecutive major tournament semi-final. Williamson was spotted in a boot and using crutches immediately after the match, which was understood to have been a precautionary measure. Morgan said her mother was 'sobbing' when she came on for her first major tournament appearance, tasked with delivering a now-viral note to Bronze and Williamson she swears she did not read, suspecting it simply contained the formation but joking later on her Instagram account that it read 'save us GOAT', in reference to Bronze. And that's what the seven-time major tournament veteran ultimately did, when she sent what became England's winning penalty – with their seventh attempt – down the middle, before slamming the ball down in celebration. 'I don't think (how important Bronze is) can be put into words,' said Morgan. 'She's such an incredible leader on this team. We're all inspired by her mentality. 'She's a freak, really. She has so much passion, energy, fire and she infects everyone else with it. That note might as well have said that, because apparently that's what she read on it.' There was, admitted Morgan, a fleeting moment, when England were 2-0 down at the end of the first half, that she entertained the possibility their campaign could be coming to an end. 'I thought, 'I've not packed anything. My wardrobes are full right now. I've not got anything in my suitcases ready',' added Morgan. 'But I really had a sense throughout the game, even when we were down, that it wasn't our time to go. 'I think sometimes you just have a sense of calm, which, I can't explain why it's there, but just a relief, really, that we're not going to let this happen. 'I always had faith that we were going to be able to turn it around and thankfully that happened.'
