Alexander Bublik Outlasts Cerundolo To Win First Career Clay-Court Title In Gstaad
Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik won his first clay-court title, defeating Argentina's Juan Manuel Cerundolo. This marks Bublik's second title of the season and sixth overall.
Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik claimed his first clay-court title on Sunday, edging past Argentina's Juan Manuel Cerundolo 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in a hard-fought final at the ATP tournament in Gstaad.
Second Title of the Season for Bublik
Currently ranked No. 34 in the world, Bublik added to his grass-court triumph in Halle last month by lifting his second trophy of the season in Switzerland. The win also marked a strong rebound after an early exit at Wimbledon.
'This is my sixth title, and I've played the greats of the game," Bublik said after the match. 'But this final I will remember as one of the toughest I've ever played. It was complete torture."
Cerundolo Impresses in Deep Run
Cerundolo was making his first appearance in a tour-level final since 2021. The 22-year-old Argentine impressed throughout the tournament, notably upsetting top seed and former champion Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals on Friday.
The victory in Gstaad continues a stellar run of form for Bublik, who has now won 17 of his last 22 matches since the Madrid Open in April. His resurgence includes a quarter-final appearance at Roland Garros, and with Sunday's title, he is set to re-enter the ATP top 30 in Monday's rankings update.

England To NOT Take A Knee; FA Protests After Jess Carter Faces Racial Abuse At EURO 2025
Last Updated: England football authorities contacted police after Jess Carter revealed racial abuse during the UEFA Women's Euro. The FA aims to bring those responsible to justice. England FA have contacted police after defender Jess Carter revealed she has been subjected to 'a lot of racial abuse" during the UEFA Women's Euro tournament in Switzerland. The 27-year-old, who has started every match for the reigning champions so far, announced she would be stepping away from social media to concentrate on the remainder of the competition. Football Association chief executive Mark Bullingham confirmed the organization 'immediately contacted UK police" upon learning of the abuse. He emphasized that the FA is determined to ensure 'those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice." England Change Anti-Racism Gesture Ahead of Tuesday's semi-final clash with Italy, the England squad announced they would stand—rather than take a knee—as their gesture against racism. In a statement, the team said: 'It is clear we and football need to find another way to tackle racism." In a statement shared on her social media platforms, Carter, who has earned 49 England caps, said: 'From the start of the tournament I have experienced a lot of racial abuse. 'Whilst I feel every fan is entitled to their opinion on performance and result, I don't agree or think it's OK to target someone's appearance or race. 'As a result of this I will be taking a step back from social media and leaving it to a team to deal with." Previous Incidents Carter is not the first England player to face racial abuse. In 2023, Lauren James was targeted online following a defeat with her club side, Chelsea. England men's players Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Jadon Sancho also faced a wave of racist abuse after missing penalties in the Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer added his voice, writing on X (formerly Twitter): 'There is no place for racism in football or anywhere in society." England head coach Sarina Wiegman voiced her support, stating: 'I stand with Jess and all Lionesses players past and present who have suffered racism." UEFA, European football's governing body, also expressed solidarity with Carter. (with AFP inputs) view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Sinner, Djokovic, Draper All Gone! Stars Withdraw From Toronto Masters Due to Injuries
Last Updated: Top tennis stars Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and Jack Draper have withdrawn from the Toronto Masters 1000 due to injuries. Three top tennis stars—Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner, 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic, and world No. 5 Jack Draper—have withdrawn from the upcoming Masters 1000 tournament in Toronto, all citing injuries. The tournament, set to begin in a week, will now proceed without several of its biggest names, altering the landscape of the draw ahead of the U.S. Open. Sinner Sidelined by Elbow Injury World No. 1 Jannik Sinner announced he will not compete due to an injury to his right elbow. The injury occurred during a fall in his fourth-round match at Wimbledon, where he eventually captured his first title at the All England Club and fourth Grand Slam overall. Sinner, who claimed his maiden Masters 1000 title in Toronto in 2023, expressed disappointment over missing the event. 'Winning that title in Toronto two years ago was the start of a really special moment for me, but after speaking with my team, I have to recover," Sinner said. Novak Djokovic, a four-time champion in Toronto, also pulled out, citing a groin injury. The Serbian star was defeated by Sinner in the Wimbledon semifinals earlier this month. His absence removes a major contender from the field as he focuses on recovery ahead of the U.S. Open. Draper Withdraws from Summer Hard-Court Events British No. 1 Jack Draper has withdrawn from both the Toronto and Cincinnati Masters tournaments due to a left arm issue. As a result, he will miss all hard-court tune-up events leading into the U.S. Open, which begins August 24. 'After Wimbledon I picked up an injury in my left arm, nothing serious, but I have to make sure it recovers fully for the rest of the season," Draper shared on social media. 'Unfortunately, I won't be able to compete in Toronto and Cincinnati … See you in NYC!" (with agency inputs) view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
