Is India looking to build its own bunker buster missile?
After the US deployed its massive bunker busters in the strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, there are reports that India is planning to develop its own such weapon.
This weapon will help India destroy an enemy nation's targets underground.
However, there is an unique twist – India is looking to do so by modifying its Agni-V missile.
The US had used its GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator, designed by Boeing and manufactured by the US Air Force, in the attack on the Fordow nuclear facility in Iran.

But what do we know about the weapon India is looking to develop?
Let's take a closer look:
What do we know?
The weapon will be an altered version of the Agni-V intercontinental ballistic missile – which is India's top missile and the cornerstone of its arsenal.
It is being developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
While the Agni-V has a range of 5,000 kilometres, this modified weapon will have a range of 2,500 kilometres.
Though the Agni-V carries nuclear missiles, this bunker buster will be a conventional weapon.
It will fly between speeds of Mach 8 and Mach 20 – making it a hypersonic missile.
It will be able to carry a 7,500-kilo warhead.
The idea behind the weapon is to hit missile silos and infrastructure that is deep beneath the earth – which will be made possible as the Agni-V missile itself is accurate within a range of 10 metres.
The warhead will be able to penetrate between 80 to 100 metres underground before detonating.
Like the GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (which uses Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation System to find and lock on to its targets), this weapon too will rely on precision guidance and advanced navigation systems.
While the Agni-V has a range of 5,000 kilometres, this modified weapon will have a range of 2,500 kilometres. Reuters
The DRDO is also examining an airburst variant that allows it to take out targets above the ground.

The warhead could weigh as much as 8 tonnes – more than three times what the warhead of the its GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator weighs.
Why is India looking to build such a missile?
India is looking at building its own bunker buster missile because, unlike the United States, it has no B-2s and B-52s to deliver such a payload.
India's Rafale and Su-30 craft are not equipped to deliver such bunker buster missiles.
The development of this weapon will allow the Indian Air Force to deliver high-impact hits to underground targets from long distances.
During Operation Sindoor, there was chatter on social media that India had hit Kirana Hills in Pakistan – which is reportedly home to a nuclear storage facility.

However, Indian Air Force's Director General of Air Operations Air Marshal AK Bharti later denied this.
India in the future can look to target underground facilities of its rivals.
Meanwhile, though US President Donald Trump has said that Iran's nuclear facilities have been 'totally obliterated ', top defence chiefs and US officials have expressed scepticism about such claims.
'It was obliterating like nobody's ever seen before,' Trump claimed in an interview on Sunday. 'And that meant the end to their nuclear ambitions, at least for a period of time.'

Trump has insisted from just hours after three key targets were struck by US bunker buster bombs and Tomahawk missiles that Iran's nuclear program was 'obliterated.'
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said they were 'destroyed.'

However, a preliminary report from the US Defence Intelligence Agency said that while the strikes did 'significant damage' to the Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan sites, they did not totally destroy the facilities.
The US intelligence community thinks that the vast majority of Iran's amassed enriched uranium likely remains buried under the rubble at Isfahan and Fordo, two of the three key nuclear facilities targeted by US strikes.

It's incredibly fast-growing, but what users are doing with AI, what citizens of India are doing with AI, is really quite remarkable,' Altman said during a media briefing. The OpenAI CEO said he was excited to visit India in September and that his company was especially focused on bringing its product to the country. "We're especially focused on bringing products to India, working with local partners to make AI work great for India and make it more affordable for people across the country. We've been paying a lot of attention here given the rate of growth, and I am excited to come for a visit in September," he said. OpenAI launches ChatGPT-5 OpenAI on Thursday announced the launch of GPT-5, describing it as its 'best model yet for coding and agentic tasks". "We're releasing GPT-5 in three sizes in the API -- gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano -- to give developers more flexibility to trade off performance, cost, and latency. While GPT-5 in ChatGPT is a system of reasoning, non-reasoning, and router models, GPT-5 in the API platform is the reasoning model that powers maximum performance in ChatGPT. Notably, GPT-5 with minimal reasoning is a different model from the non-reasoning model in ChatGPT, and is better tuned for developers. The non-reasoning model used in ChatGPT is available as gpt-5-chat-latest," OpenAI said in a blog post. Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, added that the new model significantly improves understanding across more than 12 Indian languages. "GPT-5 significantly improves multilingual understanding across over 12 Indian languages, including regional languages. DIAT ramps up focus on semiconductor design, defence & space electronics, quantum tech in wake of Op Sindoor

Amidst an increased push for niche indigenous technologies in the backdrop of Operation Sindoor, Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) has started a specialised programme — with another to be launched — in semiconductor design and defence and space electronics, said DIAT Vice Chancellor Dr BHVS Narayana Murthy on Thursday. He added that a futuristic quantum technology laboratory will also be launched. Dr Murthy was speaking at a curtain raiser event for the 14th Convocation Ceremony of DIAT which will be held on August 9. The convocation will be presided over by chairman of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and secretary of Department of Defence Research and Development, Dr Samir V Kamat, who is also the chairman of the Governing Council of DIAT. DIAT, which is an autonomous organisation of the Department of Defence Research and Development, offers post graduate programmes — including MTech, MSc and PhD — that are tailored towards defence and security applications. Dr Murthy said, 'After the recent Operation Sindoor, a lot of thrust is being given by the government and the tri-services to the indigenous weapons systems and defence technologies. There is a lot of thrust on getting skilled human resources in this area. To that end we launched an advanced course in semiconductor chip design — an area which has seen a lot of government push and another one in Defence and Space Electronics — which will cater for advanced defence and space payload electronics research. To encourage more systems engineering concepts, we are introducing an industrial system engineering programme for working professionals which will be conducted in hybrid mode on weekends.' 'As part of the DRDO reforms, DIAT has been chosen as the main institute to offer MTech in Defence Technology programme for its new recruits. We are successfully conducting a course for the Ministry of Home Affairs to train Cyber Commandos for six months. The first batch completed its course and the second will soon join. The DIAT is also involved in niche and advanced research areas with key defence applications. One of them is free-space high data laser communication, in which we have successfully demonstrated proof of concept. Our quantum technology group is also involved in key research, particularly quantum communication, quantum sensing, quantum computing and quantum key distribution. A dedicated quantum research laboratory is set to be inaugurated,' Dr Murthy added. 'Our Electronics and Physics Departments are working on photonics based electronic warfare systems and radar sensor systems. Many technologies which are a result of indigenous research have been completed and inducted. Like we saw in Operation Sindoor like Akash, Brahmos and direct energy weapons. In the coming years, the projects that are in the final stages of development, will undergo user evaluation trials and will be inducted into the forces. And the industries including PSU will play a major role in the process,' he said. Answering questions on the success of homegrown guidance, tracking and sensing systems during Op Sindoor and ongoing work in these areas, Dr Murthy said, 'DIAT is conducting PG courses like aerospace, which covers guide missiles, UAV and air armaments. We have a course in radar and sensing technology.' Speaking about research futuristic technologies, he said, 'One is free-space high data laser communication. With space being a domain of warfare, we are giving a thrust to space payloads as part of the defence and space electronics programme. The quantum group is working on quantum sensors. There is ongoing research on photonics based radars which will make the systems compact and also give systems jamming immunity. We are also working on advanced material for aircrafts and missiles. Many recent conflicts globally have highlighted the use of drones not just for surveillance but actual combat. Swarm drones are also a key sector. Our teams are working on various aspects including the anti drone systems.' Capable of deep-strike missions lasting up to 9 hours, the HARPY can operate day and night, in all weather conditions, and even in environments where Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are denied or contested.
