'Degenerate art' denounced by Nazis goes on show in Paris

Euronews18-02-2025
A new exhibition on the 'degenerate' art disavowed by the Nazis has opened in Paris. 'L'art dégénéré' is now on at the Musée Picasso in Paris and is the first show in France dedicated to the art which came under attack during the Nazi regime.
At the forefront of the expo is an examination of the 'Entartete Kunst' (degenerate art) exhibition that ran in Munich in 1937 showing more than 600 works by artists persecuted by the Nazis.
'Entartete Kunst' was designed to disgust the German public at the output of artists from backgrounds rejected by the fascist state, such as Jews, Bolsheviks and homosexuals. Many of the artists included in the exhibition are now considered crucial avant-garde members of modern art such as Otto Dix, Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee.
The 1937 show was the culmination of a series of exhibitions promoted by the Nazi state to 'purge' the degenerate art that was a threat to German 'purity'. It followed exhibitions in Dresden, Mannheim, Karlsruhe and others across Germany that ran from the party's election in 1933.
As part of the German government's sweep, over 20,000 works of art from artists including Vincent Van Gogh, Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso were withdrawn, sold or destroyed.
'L'art dégénéré' runs at the Musée Picasso from 18 February to 25 May and features many of the works targeted during the era. It examines the way fascist governments persecute people through art and targeting artists.
Other artists featured in the exhibition include George Grosz, Paul Klee and Oskar Kokoschka.
There's also a section dedicated to the persecution of Jewish artists by the Nazi regime, focused around two paintings from Jewish French-Russian artist Marc Chagall.
It's the first time a French museum has dedicated an exhibition to the art branded degenerate by the Nazis aside from a small exhibition by the Goethe Institut in 1989. Other countries have run similar exhibitions in the past, including a major Berlin retrospective in 1992.
Some of the artworks on display were thought to have been lost forever during the war. Sculptures by German sculptor Emy Roeder that were found during a 2010 archaeological dig in Berlin are on show.
Other works catalogue the journey through the war, from ownership by Jewish art patrons to their theft by the Nazis and eventual return to the original owner's descendants.
'La Prise (Rabbin)', a painting by Chagall which takes its title from a short story by Yiddish writer Isaac Leib Peretz was acquired by the Kunsthalle of Mannheim in 1928. As both the painter and the painting's subject embodied Jewish culture, the work was paraded through Mannheim's streets in 1933 with the message 'You who pay taxes, you should know where your money is spent' before it was shown in the 1937 'Degenerate Art' exhibition.
There are also letters from artists like Dix throughout the exhibition that paint a picture of life as an artist during the Nazi era. It also tells the stories of the artists persecuted by the regime.
As the exhibition debuts in Paris, the exhibition is a powerful historical document of how fascist regimes persecute culture through its art.
'L'art dégénéré' runs at the Musée Picasso Paris until 25 May.

A peek inside Paris' Pompidou Center before its five-year revamp

The Pompidou Center, one of Paris' most radical and beloved cultural institutions, is preparing to shut its doors this autumn for a major five-year renovation. The renovation will see asbestos removed from all facades, major fire safety upgrades, and entire floors reconfigured - including the creation of a new level dedicated to children. Its vast collection of modern and contemporary masterpieces will be dispersed across museums in Paris, throughout France, and beyond. Work is set to begin by the end of 2025, with a grand reopening planned for 2030. The building that broke the rules and caused a scandal With its unconventionally exposed pipes and skeletal escalators crawling across the exterior, the Pompidou was once considered an architectural scandal. Early critics mockingly dubbed it the 'Notre-Dame of the Pipes,' appalled by its defiant break from the orderly elegance of Haussmannian Paris. But over time, the building - designed by then-unknown young architects Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers and opened in 1977 - won over the hearts of the public. Commissioned by and named after President Georges Pompidou - who died before its completion - the building was born from his radical vision: a place where art and life would collide, and where disciplines from painting to performance could coexist under one roof. Today the Pompidou holds more than 120,000 works of modern and contemporary art, featuring iconic pieces by Louise Bourgeois, Frida Kahlo, Joan Miró, Marcel Duchamp, Marc Chagall, and many more. No wonder it's such a hit. In 2024 alone, the centre drew over 3 million visitors, making it one of Paris' most visited institutions - second only to the Louvre (8 million) and the Musée d'Orsay (3.7 million). This year, the institution staged one of its most ambitious and politically resonant shows in recent memory. Titled Paris Noir, the exhibition (which ran until late June) traced the rich, too-often overlooked contributions of Black artists from Africa, the Americas, and the Caribbean who lived in or passed through Paris between 1950 and 2000. With over 150 artists - from Wifredo Lam to Luce Turnier, Beauford Delaney to Agustín Cárdenas - the show was a sweeping and visually powerful re-mapping of post-colonial modernity. Now, the final major show before the Pompidou's shutdown is a sweeping retrospective of German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans. Sprawled across what used to be the public library, the show brings together over three decades of work by the Turner Prize-winning artist, widely regarded as one of the most influential photographers of his generation. Titled Nothing could have prepared us – Everything could have prepared us, the retrospective showcases his wide-ranging approach to image-making across portraiture, still life, architecture, documentary photography, and abstraction. The Wolfgang Tillmans retrospective runs until 22 September 2025.

Donald Trump weighs in on Sydney Sweeney-American Eagle controversy

Another day, another chapter in the American Eagle / Sydney Sweeney controversy, which won't seem to die down. Following the polarising campaign that led many to call out racist undertones and label the fashion ads as 'Nazi', the viral backlash that ensued, the comments from The White House and other US conversatives regarding cancel culture, the response from American Eagle and the revelation that actress Sydney Sweeney is a registered Republican voter, now comes – somewhat predictably – Donald Trump's take. The US president has run to the defence of the 27-year-old Euphoria and White Lotus actress at the heart of the controversy by declaring on Truth Social: 'Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the 'HOTTEST' ad out there. It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are 'flying off the shelves'. Go get 'em Sydney!' He continued: 'On the other side of the ledger, Jaguar did a stupid, and seriously WOKE advertisement, THAT IS A TOTAL DISASTER! The CEO just resigned in disgrace, and the company is in absolute turmoil.' He went on to mention other companies that he considers to be 'woke'. Trump reposted his comments three times to fix various typos and then decided to hit out at Taylor Swift, bashing the pop star by saying that she is 'no longer hot.' 'Just look at Woke singer Taylor Swift. Ever since I alerted the world as to what she was by saying on TRUTH that I can't stand her (HATE!). She was booed out of the Super Bowl and became, NO LONGER HOT.' He presidentially added: 'The tide has seriously turned – Being WOKE is for losers, being Republican is what you want to be.' This is not the first time that Trump has beefed with Swift, with some exchanges online during last year's election making headlines. Trump even falsely claimed Swift's endorsement with AI-generated posts and went on to write 'I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT' on his social accounts. In case you missed it, the American Eagle ad campaign, which declares 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans', came under fire last month for the play on words 'jeans' and 'genes' - which many perceived as celebrating white supremacy and invoking eugenics. One of the campaign's most polarising clips features the 27-year-old actress saying: 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair colour, personality and even eye colour. My jeans are blue.' Check out our explainer on the Sydney Sweeney controversy. The US fashion retailer responded to the backlash over the weekend, stating: 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story,' they posted on Instagram. 'We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.' On the same day that statement was issued, vice president JD Vance defended the campaign, saying: 'My political advice to the Democrats is continue to tell everybody who thinks Sydney Sweeney is attractive is a Nazi. That appears to be their actual strategy.' He continued: 'I mean, it actually reveals something pretty interesting about the Dems though, which is that you have a normal all-American beautiful girl doing like a normal jeans ad. They're trying to sell jeans to kids in America and they have managed to so unhinge themselves over this thing. And it's like, did you learn nothing from the November 2024 election?' Sydney Sweeney has yet to address the controversy – something which some of her fans find troubling. Not helping things is the fact that Sweeney's Republican voter registration was recently revealed. According to publicly available records, the actress is registered as a Republican voter in Florida. She registered to vote on 14 June 2024 - weeks after Donald Trump was convicted in New York City of criminal falsification of business records and a few months before he won a second US presidency. While the Florida Department of State records confirm that the actress has an 'Active' voting status, meaning she was eligible to vote, this does not mean that she actually voted from Trump. Still, this has galvanised those who were already slamming Sweeney in 2022 for posting a series of photos from her mother's surprise birthday party, in which guests wore MAGA hats. Faced with growing criticism, Sweeney issued a statement on social media at the time, pleading with the public to 'stop making assumptions'. 'An innocent celebration… has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention,' added Sweeney.
