Michigan parks and campgrounds have reopened for holiday weekend, following spring ice storms
All the state parks and boating access sites that closed due to the storm have reopened, and all state forest campgrounds are expected to be open this weekend.
The March 28-30 storm led to 19 state parks, 54 state forest campgrounds, and 162 boating access sites closing. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources staff have spent thousands of hours cleaning the area since.
The North Western State Trail, North Central State Trail, and North Eastern State Trail have been cleared to open. However, the DNR asks that visitors please respect closure signs, as about 60% of the region is still closed.
Parts of the forest suffered severe and permanent damage, appearing different from before the storm. Tree branches are hanging, tree stumps are sticking out the ground, and over a thousand roads are impassable.

"Valley residents have woken up to a surprise this morning with rather thick, hazy, dusty conditions," Graves said. A timelapse of the air quality in the last 24 hours starts off with yellow moderate air, there's a quick shift to the red unhealthy levels, before moving to a deep purple, showing that the air quality is hazardous. "Currently, dust levels are improving as the day heats up," Graves said on July 1. Graves says the main culprit of the thick air was overnight thunderstorms to our east. "That resulted in gusty winds and blew it our direction," he said, warning more might be on the way. What is Alligator Alcatraz, and what does it look like? Alligator Alcatraz, the immigration detention center in the Florida Everglades, had a special visitor July 1 − President Donald Trump. It marked the first visit back to his home state in two months. Championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and State Attorney General James Uthmeier, the state transformed the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport in Ochopee into Alligator Alcatraz in a quick turnaround (see below). Florida's Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center was previously a 39-square-mile airport facility with a 10,500-foot runway to temporarily detain 'illegal aliens.' However, not everyone is on board with Alligator Alcatraz. Since ground broke at transforming the lone airport strip into the ICE detention center, environmental groups have protested against Alligator Alcatraz.
