In-state Iowa basketball 2026 recruit decommits from Hawkeyes
After reaffirming his commitment to Iowa in April, class of 2026 guard Navon Shabazz has now decommitted from the Hawkeyes.
Hawkeye Insider's Sean Bock broke the news that Shabazz had decommitted from Iowa and that former Hawkeye head coach and current Penn men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery had offered.
Shabazz is ranked as a three-star combo guard by 247Sports. 247Sports rates Shabazz as the nation's No. 21 combo guard and as the No. 4 player from Iowa.
A member of Iowa United Prep, Shabazz picked up his initial offer from Iowa in February of 2024 before committing on Sept. 16, 2024.
With a new head coach in Ben McCollum in place in Iowa City, it's not surprising that either the staff or player might have a different vision about the future as compared to the fit with the previous staff.
Shabazz also picked up offers from Iowa State, Wake Forest, Siena and Southern Miss before initially committing to the Hawkeyes. The 2026 guard's decommitment leaves Iowa without a high school pledge in the cycle for the time being.
Iowa flipped a pair of high school recruits in the 2025 class in former UNI signee Trevin Jirak and former Drake signee Tate Sage.
Jirak is a 6-foot-10 center from Valley High School in West Des Moines, who averaged 16.2 points, 9.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.1 blocks per contest while shooting 59.2% from the field, 38.6% from 3-point range, and 71.2% from the free-throw line. According to On3, Jirak is a three-star addition to the program, the nation's No. 27 power forward and the top player from Iowa in the 2025 class.
Meanwhile, Sage is a 6-foot-7 guard from Weatherford, Oklahoma, that averaged 11.0 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game during his junior season.

Will Caitlin Clark play Tuesday? Indiana Fever provide injury update
WNBA and Indiana Fever fans are anxiously awaiting the return of superstar Caitlin Clark. Clark has been sidelined with a left quadriceps injury since the Fever's May 24 contest against the New York Liberty. Clark has missed each of Indiana's past four contests as she works her way back from the injury. Advertisement On Monday, Fever head coach Stephanie White provided an update on the injury status of Clark, ruling out the Fever star for Indiana's contest at Atlanta on Tuesday night. "Not for tomorrow," White said of Clark's availability against the Dream. "No. I think for us, we've got to work both her and Sophie back into are they in basketball condition? What does it mean to go live? It's one thing to do some shooting drills. It's another thing to get out there on the floor, get back into movement patterns, rhythm, timing. "And so that's what part of picking and choosing the things that they can be in in practice, so that we can see their progression. Both of them, being out for long periods of time, you've got to work your way back into being game ready." Coach White was asked if Clark had been cleared to return to basketball activities. Advertisement "I don't know if cleared is the right word. We're ready to start ramping back up. It's completely different when you're just doing 1-on-1 workouts and when you're out there in 5-on-5, getting up and down the floor, moving laterally. So, she's been allowed to do some practicing. Not everything. And we're going to be smart and we're going to be cautious and we're going to play the long game and work her back in very intentionally," White said. Clark is is currently averaging 19.0 points, 9.3 assists, 6.0 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game on 40.3% field goal shooting, 31.4% from 3-point range and 75.0% from the free-throw line. The second-year pro opened the season with the third triple-double of her career and has two more double-doubles, including Clark's 18 points and 10 assists against the reigning WNBA champion Liberty in her final game before injury. The Fever are 2-2 minus Clark and have won both of their past two contests. Indiana is 4-4 on the season. After its date at Atlanta, Indiana hosts the Liberty again on Saturday, June 14. Former Iowa football quarterback shows off new championship ring
Despite Iowa football being in the lulls of the college football offseason, former Iowa football quarterback Drew Tate showed off his new Canadian Football League (CFL) Grey Cup ring on Sunday as he was a part of the Toronto Argonauts' coaching staff as an offensive assistant coach. For Tate, this is his third Grey Cup title and first in his coaching career. Tate won two Grey Cups as a player, one in 2007 with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and another in 2014 with the Calgary Stampeders. Tate joined the Argonaunts' coaching staff in March 2024 after numerous positional coaching duties at schools such as Coastal Carolina, University of Tennessee-Martin, and Northern Iowa, as well as time with the CFL's BC Lions. When the Argonauts received their championship rings on Sunday night, Tate proudly displayed the intricate design on his finger as the former Hawkeye continued to add to his winning resume. Tate played quarterback with Iowa from 2003-06, finished his Hawkeyes career with 8,292 passing yards on 665-of-1,090 completions for 61 touchdowns and 34 interceptions in 41 games. He also recorded 135 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground. The native of Baytown, TX, also earned All-Big Ten Conference first-team (coaches) and second-team (media) in the 2004 season, which saw the Hawkeyes finish as Big Ten co-champions with a 10-2 overall record and a Capital One Bowl victory. Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle The highlight of his Iowa tenure was his 2005 Capital One Bowl MVP performance when he passed for 287 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions on 20-for-32 attempts, which was capped by a miraculous game-winning 56-yard touchdown pass to Warren Holloway with time expiring in the fourth quarter to vault to the Hawkeyes to a shocking 30-25 win over then-ranked No. 12 LSU. While the 2025 CFL season is still in its early stages, and the college football and NFL seasons are just around the corner, more Iowa football alumni could very well earn championship hardware sooner rather than later.
