Rope in gearbox, bald tires: Thornton police show unsafe vehicles on Colorado roadways
The efforts were part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance International Roadcheck, a three-day effort for law enforcement to focus on commercial vehicle safety, compliance and education.

The police department said it uncovered 68 violations in the course of the event and removed seven vehicles and five drivers from service.
The agency also found a vehicle with fictitious plates, as well as three unlicensed drivers and one driver who was in possession of drugs.
'The photos show just how dangerous some of these vehicles were — from bald tires to a steering gearbox held on with rope,' the agency said.
Last month, Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputies and Colorado State Patrol troopers partnered on an operation to remove unsafe commercial vehicles and drivers from the state's roadways, ultimately taking seven commercial vehicles and four commercial vehicle drivers out of service.
In 2024, a commercial vehicle crashed on U.S. 285, killing one person and injuring others. A trucking industry expert told the Problem Solvers that the crash shows that enforcement of the vehicles is crucial to road safety.
An arrest affidavit said the driver told troopers his brakes went out, but investigators measuring skids on the pavement determined the truck's brakes were working, although well below the minimum requirements. Investigators also reported that the truck had not been inspected since 2020. Colorado State Patrol said that the driver was convicted of speeding and operating without lawfully required equipment in 2022.

Colorado State Patrol says more pedestrians injured, killed when drivers ignore red lights, stop signs
The Colorado State Patrol says the state is seeing a dangerous trend of drivers going through red lights and stop signs without stopping. According to CSP, two people have been killed and 48 injured so far in 2025. In 2024, three people were killed and 85 were injured. Troopers say pedestrians remain at the highest risk because they don't have any protection when hit by a car. According to CSP's data, in 2024, 1,539 citations were issued. So far in 2025, 170 citations have been issued. CSP shared more details involving the counties with the highest number of citations: Troopers say distracted drivers are the worst when it comes to going through red lights and stop signs. This includes drivers being on their phones, changing music, distracted by passengers, and in a rush. When you get the green light, it is best to wait an extra couple of seconds," said Colorado State Trooper Gabriel Moltrer. "Make sure you check both directions of travel before you proceed. Do this just in case one person may have been trying to beat the light. Someone may not have been paying attention." Troopers also remind drivers that children heading back to school are also the biggest risk for getting hit by cars, in part because children like to dart out across the street. Troopers recommend always driving the speed limit and watching out for them around school zones and in neighborhoods.
