'Calm' England have 'great capacity' to regroup

BBC News12-04-2025

While the crowd in Cork rose to their feet to clap off an Ireland side who were only 7-5 down against the favourites for the Rugby World Cup, England's leaders blocked out all the noise and gathered in a huddle.Captain Zoe Aldcroft led the discussion with lock Abbie Ward, fly-half Zoe Harrison, scrum-half Natasha Hunt and centre Meg Jones. All the remaining players were off down the tunnel, but the Red Roses' leadership team - like they did at the Principality Stadium in round two - took time to debrief before hearing from head coach John Mitchell and his assistants in the changing room.Ireland had frustrated Mitchell's side for large parts of the first half, and took a deserved lead through a try by wing Amee-Leigh Costigan. However, Morwenna Talling's score helped the visitors to a narrow half-time lead, and six unanswered second-half tries emphatically ended any possibility of a shock defeat."The half-time dressing room was calm," Harrison told BBC Sport."It was all about how we could take pressure off ourselves and to just work on the successes we were getting."The Red Roses have not lost since their World Cup final defeat by New Zealand in 2022, with Mitchell's side rarely even close to defeat in their incredible 23-game winning run.Their most recent proper challenge came back in October against Canada at WXV1, where again they only held a 7-5 lead at half-time before eventually winning 21-12 to retain their title.Cork provided a similar exercise, which is exactly what England want before a home World Cup kicks off in August."We actually really enjoyed that test. We needed that and it's good for the game to have a first half like that," England attack coach Lou Meadows told BBC Sport."It was a physical battle and all about winning the collision and we just didn't do that in the first half."They fixed it in the changing room themselves. It was about the collision and winning the carry, they spoke about the one action they needed to achieve that."We wanted to keep it simple, clear that up and then we can play fast."
The message about winning the collision from the leadership team quickly came to fruition when Jess Breach burst down the wing to score a disallowed try just over 30 seconds into the second half.It was the start of a free-flowing half of rugby from the Red Roses, led by fly-half Harrison, who despite being known for her strong kicking game was lively with ball in hand."I really enjoyed Zoe's running game today, we know she can kick and distribute but I just liked how she got her head up early and saw space," former England fly-half and 2014 World Cup-winner Katy Daley-Mclean told BBC's Rugby Union Weekly."She was solving the problems in front of her, she is starting to develop into a really well-rounded 10 and coming into form at exactly the right time."The biggest swing came when Mitchell unloaded his bench, which saw replacement prop Sarah Bern score twice and Kelsey Clifford grab her first international try.Mitchell made 13 changes to his starting XV from the opening win over Italy to the hammering of Wales in Cardiff as he aims to build "two teams" before the World Cup."One thing England have is a massively good bench, Sarah Bern came on and was outstanding," added Mclean."Kelsey Clifford and Maddie Feaunati were brilliant, the list is endless. They all came on and added."It is great for England as it is competition but they know that very few teams in the world can live with you for 80 minutes and your bench."England, who next face Scotland in Leicester next Saturday, are chasing a seventh Women's Six Nations title in a row and a fourth successive Grand Slam.France are the last team to beat the Red Roses in the Six Nations back in 2018 and, after a convincing win over Wales, remain on course to set up a potential Grand Slam-decider at Allianz Stadium on 26 April.Former Red Roses head coach Simon Middleton says England need to address how they begin games."They need to look at how they start the game, they struggled last week in the start against Wales and again this week," Middleton told BBC Sport."What they do have is a great capacity to regroup themselves and that strength in depth, but against better sides they won't get presented with as many opportunities."Other sides will not fall away as much as Ireland did."Come World Cup time - in front of what are likely to be record-breaking crowds - being calm and regrouping under pressure is certainly a handy skill to call upon.

Chelsea told to sign 'exciting' €28m Norway international star in summer window

Tore Andre Flo believes his former club Chelsea should sign Norway international star Antonio Nusa in the summer transfer window. The Blues are looking to recruit a new winger after sending Jadon Sancho back to Manchester United following his loan spell in west London. They are already in talks to sign Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens but Flo feels Nusa – who plays for RB Leipzig – should also be in Chelsea's sights. The 20-year-old, who is valued at €28m (£23.6m) by Transfermarkt, can be deployed as a winger or attacking midfielder and is under contract with his current club until 2029. Flo has been left impressed by his Norwegian compatriot after his performance in the 3-0 World Cup qualifying win over Italy on Friday, in which Nusa assisted his country's first goal and then scored the second. 'I've been watching the national team for a bit now,' Flo, who played 76 times for Norway from 1995 to 2004, told Metro via Nusa joined Bundesliga side RB Leipzig from Club Brugge in August 2024, signing a five-year deal. He's played 36 times for RB Leipzig to date, conjuring up a total of 12 goal involvements. Nusa has particularly impressed on the international stage for Norway, scoring five goals and registering seven assists across 14 caps. 'There are some big superstars in there but [Chelsea] wouldn't be able to buy Erling Haaland or Martin Odegaard. There is a player called Antonio Nusa. 'I think he is very, very exciting. I've just seen him play against Italy and he was amazing in that game. I think he'd be possible to buy for a big club like Chelsea.' Meanwhile, Flo feels that AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan is a 'very smart' signing for his old club in the summer transfer window. 'There has been a lot of talk about the goalkeeping position at Chelsea,' Flo said. 'I think it was on the cards that something was going to happen there. 'It sounds like a good signing to me. A club like Chelsea would improve the squad straight away if there was any doubt [over Robert Sanchez]. To me it sounds very, very smart.' Chelsea signed Ipswich striker Liam Delap in a £30m deal this summer and Flo has set a goal target for his first season at Stamford Bridge. More Trending 'If you are a striker for Chelsea, there is a chance to score well over 20 goals,' Flo added. 'If you want to be successful you need to score 20. But it depends on how he will share his time playing [with Nicolas Jackson]. 'Is one going to play 80 per cent of the time? So it's hard to put a number – but I think it's possible to get 20.' Weeks later Iling-Junior, who originally departed Chelsea for Juve in 2020, was back in England and heading to Middlesbrough. And it was while playing for the Championship club that he decided he wants his future to be at left-back. Iling-Junior, who is battling with Tino Livramento to start there for England U21s in Thursday's Euros opening against Czech Republic, said: 'I definitely settled into the left-back role and going up and down the pitch [at Boro]. I enjoyed that, bringing my parts into the team with assists, tricks and being creative. 'It's an honour to be one of the players that the manager has chosen and I want to repay that on the pitch. 'Tino has obviously had that great season with Newcastle. The competition is always healthy. If I can bring out the best of him and he brings out the best of me and we go and win the tournament then it's happy days.' Iling-Junior has represented England at every level bar the seniors and has seen several of his team-mates graduate into the Three Lions first-team. And he knows this month's tournament in Slovakia could lead to a huge season ahead for him at both club and international level as he revealed his ambitions for the coming 12 months. 'There's a pathway and there's always someone watching. All the boys that have made their debut from the U21s and are now in that squad, that just goes to show that if you keep putting your mind to it and work with the coaches then you'll get repaid for your hard work. England's biggest divers of the season crowned... as shocking record revealed 'And definitely get back into Villa after this tournament and have some conversations and make an impact there as well. 'Unai Emery has always had conversations with me, so that helps. and he's kept track of my loans. So that's definitely a good relationship and once we get back after the tournament then we'll have those conversations. 'But, for now, it's definitely just focusing on the Euros and we'll see when I get back to Villa.' Iling-Junior has already tasted Euro joy with England at U19 level and was part of the Juventus side alongside the likes of Dusan Vlahovic and Adrien Rabiot that beat Atalanta to lift the Coppa Italia last season. 3 He added: 'Winning the Coppa Italia, winning a trophy, is one of the best feelings I've had. 'Juventus is a big, big club and I learned what winning actually meant there, and not just winning, dominating and that's a really nice feeling knowing that you're part of history. 'I enjoyed the pressure there. That gave me motivation each game to go out with a bit of pressure and do what I enjoy. Winning the Euros would definitely be up there with that.' England kick-off their Euro campaign against the Czech Republic on Thursday. They then face Slovenia three days later and finish the group stage against Germany on Wednesday 18 June with all of the Young Lions' matches being broadcast on Channel 4.
