SkyWest Airlines flight from Omaha to Detroit diverted to Cedar Rapids due to "unruly passenger"
SkyWest Flight 3612 departed Omaha's Eppley Airfield Thursday and was diverted to the Eastern Iowa Airport because of an "in-air disturbance" by a passenger.
Police met the flight at around 6:13 p.m. local time and arrested the passenger, 23-year-old Mario Nikprelaj, of Nebraska.
SkyWest, which was operating as a Delta connection for the flight, said it has a zero-tolerance policy for unruly behavior.
"SkyWest has zero tolerance for unruly behavior as safety for our customers and crew is our top priority," SkyWest said in a statement.
Nikprelaj is lodged in the Linn County Correctional Center on charges of disorderly conduct, assault, possession of prescription medication, tax stamp and first-degree harassment. The charges are pending an investigation.
The FAA says that since the start of 2025, there have been at least 870 reports of unruly passengers on flights.

New York City's Subway Is Actually Safer Than Your Car
At a hearing of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure in Washington this week, Representative Jerry Nadler of Manhattan and Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy squared off over the safety of New York City's subways. A snippet: The number of major felonies on the subway is in fact down this year and down since 2019 (by 3.9% and 7.3%, respectively, as of the end of May, according to the most recent crime report provided by the New York City Police Department to the board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority). But felony assaults on the subway in the first five months of this year were up 18% compared with the same period last year and 66% compared with the same period in 2019. Nobody was lying. Both Nadler and Duffy were making valid claims about subway crime, even if their numbers don't appear to be entirely up to date.

Authorities say airline passenger fought a flight attendant and tried to open exit door midair
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- A regional airline flight heading to Detroit had to make an emergency landing in eastern Iowa after a passenger fought with a flight attendant and tried to open an exit door midair, according to the pilot's communication with air traffic controllers. The pilot of the SkyWest Airlines Flight 3612 contacted the tower at Eastern Iowa Airport in Cedar Rapids shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday requesting to land because of a passenger causing a disturbance. 'He's in a fight with our flight attendant right now, trying to open the emergency exit,' the pilot said, according to audio captured by LiveATC. The disturbance happened shortly after the SkyWest flight departed from Omaha, Nebraska, around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, according to police. The flight was diverted to and landed safely at the Cedar Rapids airport, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration. Once on the ground, local police boarded and arrested the 23-year-old Omaha man, Cedar Rapids police said. The flight was able to travel on to Detroit later Thursday night, according to a statement issued by SkyWest Airlines, a Utah-based regional carrier that operates flights for major airlines like United, Delta, American and Alaska Airlines. 'SkyWest has zero tolerance for unruly behavior as safety for our customers and crew is our top priority,' the statement read.
