Proposed hydroelectric project on Gauriganga gets Centre's nod
The Sirkari Bhyol Rupasiyabagh Hydroelectric Project will produce an estimated 52.9 crore units of green energy per year, which will make a significant contribution towards meeting the electricity needs of Uttarakhand as well as making the state energy self-reliant, a government release issued here said.
Dehradun, May 26 PTI) The Forest Advisory Committee of the Centre on Monday gave an in-principle approval to a proposal seeking the transfer of 29.997 hectares of forest land for the proposed 120 MW capacity hydroelectric project on the Gauriganga river in Uttarakhand.
The government said the project has been designed with utmost sensitivity from the environmental point of view.
As most of the structures being built are underground, including a 1-km-long tunnel, the impact on forest land will be negligible, it said. There is no national park, wildlife sanctuary or eco-sensitive zone in the project area and neither will it cause any kind of displacement, the statement said.
The government added that locals will be benefited due to employment generated due to the project, development of infrastructure among other things.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had earlier requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Bhupendra Yadav to approve the project during a meeting.
On getting in-principle approval to the project, Dhami said, 'This project is a historic step towards the all-round development of the border area of Uttarakhand.
'With the guidance and support of the Prime Minister, the state has achieved unprecedented success in the field of energy and employment. The state government is working with full commitment towards public welfare. This project will become the foundation stone of the bright future of Uttarakhand,' he said. SKY SKY

Major GST revamp: Modi govt proposes reducing GST slabs from 4 to 2, 99% of items currently in 28% slab to be shifted to 5%; Details here
Major GST revamp: Modi govt proposes reducing GST slabs from 4 to 2, 99% of items currently in 28% slab to be shifted to 5%; Details here The central government is planning a major change in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) structure, according to media reports. Under the proposal, there will be only two main GST slabs i.e. 5 per cent and 18 per cent. Around 90 per cent of the items currently in the 28 per cent slab will be shifted to the 18 per cent slab, and 99 per cent of the items in the 12 per cent slab will move to the 5 per cent slab. A special 40 per cent GST rate will be kept only for a few luxury and 'sin' goods like tobacco, gutkha, and cigarettes. This list will have just 5–7 items and will not include aspirational products such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines. Petroleum products will continue to remain outside the GST system even after the changes. Sectors that are labour-intensive and export-oriented, such as diamonds and precious stones, will keep their existing tax rates. Officials say the overall tax collection level will stay roughly the same at about 88 per cent. They believe that lowering GST rates for most items will encourage people to spend more, which in turn will make up for any short-term loss in tax revenue. The plan is based on Union Finance Ministry data showing that most GST revenue comes from items in the 18% slab—about 67 per cent of the total. In comparison, the 28 per cent slab brings in 11 per cent, the 12 per cent slab 5 per cent, and the 5 per cent slab 7 per cent. This proposal comes shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech, where he promised GST reforms as part of a 'double Diwali' for the country. The focus will be on rationalising tax rates so that all sections of society, especially the common man, women, students, the middle class, and farmers, benefit. Alongside this, the PM also announced other major initiatives, including a national deep-water exploration mission to boost energy self-reliance and the creation of an indigenous 'Sudarshan Chakra' defence system by 2035. The GST Council, which includes state finance ministers, is expected to review and possibly approve the proposal in September or October.

GST reform: Industry hails PM Modi's slab cut plan; experts see relief for MSMEs and consumers
AI image India's business community has warmly welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement to overhaul the Goods and Services Tax (GST), describing it as a crucial step towards boosting demand, cutting compliance burdens and supporting growth. In his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, PM Modi said the government will simplify the GST framework by reducing the number of tax slabs. The proposal includes scrapping the current 12% and 28% rates, leaving two core slabs, 5% and 18%. Around 99% of items in the 12% category may shift to 5%, while 90% of those taxed at 28% could move to 18%. Positive industry response Pankaj Mohindroo, chairman of the India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA), called GST 'an extraordinary reform' and said rationalising slabs would benefit both industry and consumers. 'GST was an extraordinary reform and it was committed that GST would not increase tax on he general public but it has gone up in some pockets like mobile phones and electronics. The overall rationalisation into fewer slabs is very much on the cards because we have to prepare for Viksit Bharat @ 2047... GST reforms will put more money in the pocket of consumers and it will stimulate demand and it will be good for the industry and the consumers,' he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. Economist Ved Jain said eight years of GST experience make this the right time for a structural change. 'The Prime Minister's announcement was basically that it has been eight years since GST was introduced and we have experience, collections have improved, AI is being used to carry out data analysis... Since we transitioned from VAT to GST, the government was unsure how it would turn out and the collections that would be made, so the government decided to go with four tax slabs- 6%, 12%, 18%, and 28%. After eight years, the number of tax rates must be reduced and there are likely to be two tax rates now- a standard rate between 12-18%, a merit rate, and a demerit rate... There is a structural reform that is required, given our experience", he said. BJP MP and CAIT secretary general Praveen Khandelwal said it would ease pressure on small traders and MSMEs, especially before the festive season. PHDCCI's CEO Ranjeet Mehta added that reforms expected by October would yield long-term benefits. Tax experts quoted by news agency PTI said the overhaul being described as 'GST 2.0', will address inverted duty structures, free up working capital, and make exports more competitive. Industry body CII hailed the move as 'visionary' for ease of doing business and investor confidence. As cited by PTI, EY India's Saurabh Agarwal said it comes at the right time, with GST collections for FY 2025–26 projected to cross Rs 22 lakh crore. Vineet Mittal of Avaada Group said the changes will 'unleash entrepreneurship,' while Assocham highlighted benefits for jobs, skills, and self-reliance. Since its rollout in 2017, GST has unified India's market but faced criticism over rate complexity and compliance challenges. The proposed reform aims to deliver a simpler, fairer, and more growth-friendly tax system.
