BDS student suicide case: NCW seeks report from Sharda University, urges UP top cop to conduct timely probe
'The university has been given time till Tuesday to submit the action report, as the order was issued on Friday by the women's commission. Only after the given time for report submission, any further decision will be taken by the commission,' said an official of the NCW.
In a letter addressed to the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh, NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar had called for a fair and timely investigation and demanded immediate support for the student's family. 'On this serious matter, the Chairperson of the Commission has instructed the Director General of Police of Uttar Pradesh to ensure a fair and timely investigation. Also, all necessary assistance should be provided immediately to the family of the victim. A detailed action report should be submitted to the Commission within three days,' read the letter.
Meanwhile, officials at the university said on Monday that the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of the university had not compiled the investigation report, which was expected to come out by July 25. The report, officials said, will be made public by the committee on Tuesday. 'The family's statement for the report compilation had taken too long, hence there is a delay in the report submission,' said the university spokesperson. A five-member high-level Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) was formed to investigate the matter.
Last week, officials at the varsity had told The Indian Express that there was a gap between the theory and practical implementation of student counselling mechanisms. The student, who was found dead in her hostel room on July 18, had named two faculty members in her suicide note, leading to their arrest for alleged 'harassment'.
In the purported suicide note, the BDS student, Jyoti, wrote that she was humiliated and mentally harassed. She had said that she had been feeling stressed for a long time. 'I am sorry. I cannot live like this anymore. I can't,' read the note.
The Noida Police earlier lodged an FIR under sections 108 (abetment of suicide), 238 (disappearance of evidence), 79 (insult the modesty of a woman), 352 (breach of peace), and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

NIA Arrests 2nd Suspect In Killing Of 6 Meiteis Including 3 Children In Manipur's Jiribam
New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has made a second consecutive arrest in the case of killing of three Meitei women and three children in Manipur's Jiribam district in November 2024. The NIA arrested Lalrosang Hmar alias Rosang from Mizoram's capital Aizawl on Thursday, the NIA said. He is a resident of Assam's Cachar district, neighbouring Jiribam. The first accused, Thanglienlal Hmar, was also arrested yesterday from Aizawl by a joint NIA-Assam Police team. Lalrosang was an active conspirator in the crime; the NIA recovered a mobile phone and a SIM card from him, which will be examined, the NIA said. The arrest comes three weeks after the Manipur High Court ordered the NIA to give a report on the case, and three days after it ordered the NIA to file a chargesheet within a month. The members of the Meitei community who were kidnapped from Jiribam, a district bordering Assam, and whose mutilated bodies were found floating in a river days later, were Yumrembam Rani Devi (60), Telem Thoibi Devi (31) and her daughter Telem Thajamanbi Devi (8), Laishram Heithoibi Devi (25) and her two children Laishram Chingkheinganba Singh (2.5 years old) and Laishram Lamnganba Singh (10 months old). At that time, the Manipur cabinet in a resolution had called the suspects "Kuki militants". The arrested suspect, however, belongs to the Hmar tribe, a distinct tribe and not part of the Kuki nomenclature. The Kukis in Manipur along with the Zomi and Hmar tribes have been rallying behind the banner of "Kuki-Zo" since ethnic violence with the Meiteis began in May 2023. The women and children were kidnapped from Jiribam's Bokobera neighbourhood while another group of militants were engaged in a gunfight with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Ten of the militants were shot dead in the encounter.

Cross-border arms smuggling network busted, four held in Amritsar
Chandigarh, Aug 1 (PTI) Amritsar Commissionerate Police has busted two separate cross-border illegal arms smuggling modules and four operatives, including a juvenile, were held, Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said on Friday. DGP Yadav said preliminary investigations revealed that they were in touch with Pakistan-based smugglers and retrieved weapon consignments near the international border. The weapons were meant to fuel gang rivalries and disrupt peace in the region, he said. 'The recovered weapons include two Glock pistols, four .30 bore Star pistols and one .32 bore pistol, along with six live cartridges. Apart from recovering weapons, police teams have also recovered their motorcycle, which they were using to deliver consignment," the DGP said. Those arrested have been identified as Sikanderjeet Singh (19) of village Bhagwanpura, Tarn Taran; Pradeep Singh alias Babbal (43) of Antarjami Colony, Amritsar; Jarnail Singh (34) of New Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, Amritsar; and a 17-year-old juvenile from Tarn Taran, according to an official statement. Further investigation is underway to trace forward and backward linkages to unearth the entire smuggling ring. Sharing details of the operation in which four operatives, including a juvenile, were held, Commissioner of Police, Amritsar Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said that preliminary investigations revealed Sikander, along with a juvenile, was in touch with Pakistan-based smugglers. They have their home close to the vicinity of the International Border and retrieved the consignments dropped by drones from the locations provided by them, he said. The CP said Pardeep and Jarnail are associates of slain gangster Ravneet Singh alias Sonu Mota. Bhullar said police recovered sophisticated pistols from them, which they received from Pakistani smugglers and were handed over to them by Sonu Mota prior to his death. The recovery of these weapons averted a major criminal activity in the area, he said. Further investigation is ongoing, and more arrests are likely in the coming days, the officer said. In a separate case, DGP Yadav said in a major intelligence-led operation, Counter Intelligence wing, Amritsar, arrested five operatives working under the directions of a Pakistan-based smuggler and recovered six pistols, magazines and 8 live cartridges. 'The arrested accused retrieved the consignment near the Indo-Pak border and were intercepted near Panjwar bus stop while awaiting delivery to gangsters in Punjab," DGP said in a post on X.
